According to PFT he made the decision earlier in the season. It will be sad to see him go, but he had a great career and can retire a rich man with hopefully a lot of health left. I believe he will also have to pay back the lions about 3million according to the post, but perhaps they will come to some sort of agreement to waive repayment.

Dayum. We already lost Patrick Willis in this generation. Sad to see him hang it up early, but I hope he does well in retirement.
All the best to Calvin Johnson in his next told in life. I would consider him a positive role model during his NFL career...

In his prime, he was almost unstoppable. It's a shame that he felt he had to get out of there bad enough to hang them up.
Maybe they will draft a WR ....and in result a extra defender is available come 25.
How much longer did he have on his contract? What are the chances of him coming back with another team, would the Lions have to be compensated in the form of a trade? I'd hate to see him end up in New England...

I heard on the radio that he is scheduled to make $24 million next year! Add that to the $3 million he may have to pay back and he will lose $27 million by not playing next year.
They also said that he just or is about to get married and has a kid on the way. He decided that his health and family came first. Good for him to be able to walk away with good health - and a lot of money.

Good luck in your life's work Mr. Johnson. AWESOME wr and from what i have seen in interviews, seems like a good person. Glad he is making a decision that affects his life instead of his work making that decision for him.

At this point this is still a rumor though i would say the chances are better than 50/50 he does indeed retire.
If he officially retires, it will significantly effect the Transition Tag, Franchise Tag and WR contracts. With his contract void, both tags would drop like a rock. This is very good when we're looking to resign our own elite receiver!
For $27 million, I would listen to Bernie Sanders spew on about football "back in my day," and nod in agreement.
He was never going to get his 16M base salary next year. So I guess it's more like 19m for not playing. The best move would be for him to force the Lions to release him. Then he wouldn't need to repay the money. The 24m figure was his cap hit for next year.
