I did not think it was all that when it happened, had it been just a bit later yeah but I thought maybe it was a bit picky. I think it did send a message to the rats though. If any of you guys remember for sure or have the game recorded and get a chance to watch it again let me know if what I mention next was correct. I thought the cheap shots on Ben stopped after Bert got planted. It seemed that there were no more late hits to the qb of the steelers. It makes me think that a message was sent and that it was received by the other team. I am not sure from the tv coverage if something was said to the gavens by their coaches or not, but it sure seemed like after that the game turned.

Right after McClendon planted the unflappable "Joe Cool", Collinsworth stated something like "That's the Steelers sending a message". If it was, it was received over and over again.

When the QB still has the ball while the defender starts to hit him, it is not a penalty. Absolute bullshit. Fukko is a big guy just like Ben and it takes effort to get him on the ground. As mentioned thousands of times, put flags on the QBs and be done with it.

I've never understood, since it's a personal foul now to "drive the quarterback into the ground" when you are taking him down, if you know you're going to get a hit on him, just ******* headhunt him. It's a flag either way, but one results in a possible concussion which would remove him from the game at least long enough for the "testing" to go on. A little of that and they might stop with the stupid "don't tackle him correctly or it's a flag too" bullshit.

Joe

No, we were better off keeping Joe in the game. He was rattled and freaked out by that blitz and wondering where Deebo was. You could see he was hearing footsteps last night. We didn't want him out of the game.

yeap, as predicted by some knowledgeable posters here before the game, hit him early and he will break down.
His real feature is his long pass, pretty accurate and strong. But at the end, One Trick Pony

I loved both Big Mac's hit and Silverback's - especially when I saw Bert's head bounce on the turf...some call it retribution...

My problem with it being late is how Baltimore continues to get away with either hitting or pushing the QB down after the ball is gone. Any game I have seen them play they do this. Ben has been pushed down by Baltimore for ever and Fluco is just as big as Ben. can you imagine the flags hitting the ground if Manning and Brady had to play under these rules. was a hard flag to understand on how the game had gone.

If McClendon's hit was a penalty then two things:

Why wasn't Harrison's hit a penalty
How does the NFL want McClendon to get him on the ground in that situation? His helmet was to the side, hit him below the shoulders and above the knees, wrapped him up and it wasn't late. Help me, how do you get a 6'6" quarterback on the ground in that situation and not get a penalty?

Mcclendon elevated him and planted down on him with his weight. That was a textbook penalty. Debo was just on the edge, but he more elevated Flacco's hips than actually lifted and planted.

What it was, was a text book tackle that the new NFL deems a penalty. Silverback lifted as well, when you wrap up like that it always appears that you lift the player because these guys have been taught since they were 10, to wrap, lift and drive. Good tackle as far as I'm concerned, tough to accept it as a penalty.

when the Rats got their roughing the passer call, Hairball was on the sideline laughing about it...the announcers said it would be one he'd accept since it "sends a message"

yet...when it happens to Flaccid...

McLendon's call was absolutely correct. Harrison has gotten called for that before and did what he needed to to avoid the foul.
