I know we have the game thread, but wanted some assessments of his game separately. What are your take aways?

22/39 for 315 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, 1 sack

Looked like a third-year QB should in terms of confidence. You can tell he gets starter reps in practice every week.

Pocket presence is improved, but still so so. He moved well to create a couple of times, but also allowed the rush to get to him once for an inexplicable sack and a second time for a terrible interception.

A few nice passes in stride and connected on the deep pass multiple times. Three receivers had receptions of 20 yards or more.

Spread the ball around nicely. Five receivers with 3 or more receptions. Targeted Claypool 11 times.

Led the team on a fourth quarter TD drive when behind, 2-point attempt didn't give his receiver a chance to make a play on the ball.

Overall, he played pretty well. I think he showed he can at the very least be a solid backup moving forward. Still didn't get the feeling that he is a long-term franchise QB moving forward. He feels like a guy who can get 7-9 wins, upside a little higher if he has a really good team around him.

I liked his play today. His ball has zip and his accuracy was very good. A few questionable decisions, but for his first start this year...he looked confident and poised. I liked, as Coolie mentioned, he spread the ball out, and utilized Claypool for a change. I know every QB has ‘thier guys” but it seems to me, Ben looks to Johnson and Ebron, and neither has done much to justify that trust. It was nice to see Claypool involved so much.

I want to add I also considered the Browns were without some talented DBs today.

Yep it was the kind of performance he was doing pre concussion last year... more deep shots though... one bad interception on a horrible play by everyone... one bad sack... a couple miscommunications between he and his recievers but honestly if claypool isn’t held up on the 2 pt conversion, its a tie game going into the last minute

With our defense, we could win with MR as qb. I think he is better than alot of people think

True but their third stringers looked better than their backup... ward was the only real loss in that secondary... its trash when mostly healthy... their top cb has been out all year with nerve damage in his shoulder

As most here will say...game calling plays a large role into what and how he plays. When we are down and they LET him throw....he came through. It's that simple. Last season was ****. We see what Ben does at times now until they let him open it up. Fichtner needs replaced.

Let me add....who ever decided it was a good idea to bring in Dobbs after every big pass play until the fourth quarter is an ....******* IDIOT!!!!!

22/39 56% 315 2/1 td/int

Did he do enough to earn an opportunity when Roethlisberger hangs them up?

Imo he showed a better understanding of the offense, he showed good accuracy, decent enough zip on the ball. He and Claypool seemed not on the same page a few plays, but they got better as the game went on. The INT was a boneheaded mistake even though he got hit in the head. He held the ball a little long and needs to speed up the decision making but he was a lot faster this year than last.

Personally I feel better about our QB situation than I did last year.

I thought he played well, solid back up imo, can win some games if all the other aspects of the team are playing well. Gets a little jittery from pressure and his arm is noticeably weaker than Bens on throws outside the numbers

the other thread with the same title wasn't good enough for you?

If we could get a decent (average) running game going that would help a ton ...

Honestly I didn’t have too high of expectations but thought he looked good. Still not convinced he’s the man to take over for Ben but with that being said he showed great arm strength and accuracy and didn’t look as sketish in the pocket. A lack of a run game really hurts but that can be said for any QB.

He made all the throws. What are you looking for exactly? He played a team fighting for their playoff life, He played with a bunch of back ups today. Simply. He looked the part of a NFL QB today. Tell us exactly what more were you looking for?

People forget that even last year he had some decent games, though it was mostly short passing.

His deep ball was great today, but that was his greatest strength coming out of college and kind of confusing why it was so lacking last year.

There weren't many 10-20 yard throws today, and that intermediate passing, as well as pocket presence, have been the question marks with him.

I think in the right situation, with great receivers and a good running game, he might talented enough to win 10+ games with.

However, I'm not sure I trust Tomlin to maximize his strengths and minimize his weaknesses over the course of an entire season.

Pouncey and Ebron were the only regular offensive players not playing today, and McDonald might be better than Ebron.

To be fair, the only back ups on offense were TE and C. That's not really A BUNCH of back ups. The D had most of the back ups.

Our 4th round QB is better than Cleveland's 1st rounder. And Cleveland made the playoffs!

What back ups did he play with. Pouncey and Ebron were the only starters not playing. he had the compliment of everybody else. it was the Defense that had the big guns missing. with Highsmith playing as well as he did today. that's is not good for the Browns next week when, Watt, Heyward are back. sucks that Haden won't be back, but maybe Spillane will be back.

Didn't watch the game. Saw the highlights. Only because I was curious to see how they did. Rudolph looked like a third year NFL QB starting his first game of the season. He settled in and made the plays asked of him. He outplayed the other QB of 'higher pedigree' in a near playoff atmosphere. Considering the circumstances, he did well. It's understandable that the Steelers' brass have confidence in him. I don't know that the knuckleheads on our sideline are the ones to groom him, but if he's developed competently he has the tools to deliver.
