Does anyone else think this is the key year as to determining Rudolph's long term future with the Steelers? The lack of a preseason hurts, but with the strong possibility that Ben will bow out after next year, they're really going to have to have a plan of action going forward by next summer. If they're totally convinced that he's the guy by the end of this season, then they'll have to bring in a serious challenger for his spot, either a first round pick, or if there's no one there, and they can't move up, then the highest level veteran guy they can get. You'd prefer to have a guy with at least a year in the system to take over for Ben. (I can't see them plugging a rookie in as a starter unless they can deal for a top 10 pick, and there's a stud there). There was a ton of decent stopgap types on the market this year, but it's usually not like that.
 
I think they have a good grasp on Rudolph and his future and it probably goes along with...."he isn't the one".
 
I think you've got BEN this season and restructure for two more seasons then gone. I also deon't think the FO is set on Redenose as BEN's replacement.

As a back up, rudolf is fine but I don't think he is long term answer. There is a lot riding on this season as all the cards / stars / players / etc. are aligned and SBWCMVLT needs to bring it home, the Lombardi #7 that is.

Even when we had a high pick and got ben in the 1st round. He was on the bench behind Maddox until he was forced into starting action due to Maddox injury.
 
From the camp write ups, he doesn't seem to have looked very good so far.
 
Well, when given a helmet, we knoiw that Miles Garret would win in hand to hand combat.

Of course that's what he's going to say. What is the alternative? "Um...well...he'll do I guess...until we can draft another QB next year and hopefully I don't pick another bust like him...(Nervous laughter)...."

Dale Lolley, one of the few media folks allowed in training camp, has noted on several occasions that Rudolph was having a very good camp and showed more poise and understanding of system.

I saw the one practice report with multiple picks mixed in with some good plays. Still don't know what to ultimately think about the kid. Maybe he will surprise me.
 
Mediocre talent mediocre arm and has no feel in the pocket. He is just a guy.

Listening to Colbert in the past, he's a pretty straight shooter. And he didn't have to offer up that comment, he could've simply said "Mason's having his up & down days, but we look forward to seeing him continue to grow within the system" or some general bullshit statement along those lines.

Seems like this kid has just been completely written off by some. And they might be right, I'm just choosing to wait a little longer.

The Steelers have always placed a high premium on players who "know the system" even if they suck.

Looks like a below average back up to me. Limited mobility, poor ball control, average at best arm. A small school rookie took his job, need I say more?

Wait for what? Ben is the starter and the Steelers are talking about extending him. Rudy looks to be about as good as he's going to get.
