He was pressing last night.... if he had fallen to the Steelers in that draft like some said he would if the top teams had passed, id be thrilled with him as the heir apparent here
 
They were saying in the broadcast last night when he threw his 3rd pick that that was the most he had thrown in his 3 year NFL career. So instead of saying we beat a bad quarterback, I'd say that we game planned well for a decent quarterback and that our secondary, while still needing work, is much better than it has been in years. Those 4 picks are a testament to our D, not a reflection on Mariota as a QB.

Ben threw 5 just a couple of weeks ago, does that mean Ben is even worse? Sometimes the wheels just come off.
 
Mariota is just average, dangerous runner, but he got beat on last week by Cincy, so they didn't move him or run him much and he didn't look so good.

Mariota is in year three. He has regressed a bit. Sometimes the very mobile QB's have early success, but unless they develop pocket passing skills, they start to decline once defensive coordinators get enough film on them,

Two QB's who made a huge jump from rookies to year two pro's are Wentz and Goff.
 
Mariota isn't elite. He's at the Joe Flacco level. When I look at a running qb, Steve Young is the gold standard. Then comes McNair, and McNabb. He's not as good as either at this point.

Neither of your examples were running QBs learning to develop pocket skills.

They were more so just learning their schemes.
 
He made some great passes and then some horrible one's. Looks like a Jekyll / Hyde kind of thing but if he fixes it he could be very good

Without a good run game, he's gonna be in trouble.
Still think he's a good QB, just needs some help in the offense.
 
I felt it was just a matter of time before our front rush got to him. Once he was flustered / hit he dropped off pretty fast.

For my money take Russell Wilson. He has developed pocket skills and when the game is on tge line he runs but if you just sell out to his run he will use mobility to make a big play with his arm.
 
Cowherd on occasion makes insightful comments and observations, other times he just likes to hear himself talk. John Unitas was a non-verbal QB....he wasn't so bad. Yeah I know it was 50+ years ago, but QBs were the field generals then too.
