We've been lucky enough to hit in the draft to replace players we have lost along with keeping our franchise QB. The line is finally solid even with the injuries they have had
We hit on Wallace, Sanders, Brown, Bryant and Wheaton. All to their own degrees. It took a bit to replace Willie as we went thru the Redman, Mendenhall, Jones, Moore, and Dwyer days but finally they grabbed Bell who if healthy is amazing. The offense was never amazing during the super bowl runs in the 2000s but they were good enough and countered with an A+ defense.

The defense carried this team whole Ben was young and finished a lot of teams off by themselves. There were perennial pro bowlers at almost half of the positions along with above average role players such as Foote, Clark,Kiesel, and Townsend. Replacing Smith, Hampton, Farrior, Porter/Harrison (pre 38 year old) isn't a simple task. Especially when they've been so strapped on the cap.

Now they've missed on more than they should have on defensive players. Lots of blame to go around for the Bruce Davis etc and that has really been critical in this teams demise. Obviously we have the offense and it will all return next year (minus beachum). Were finally out of salary cap hell and they should've be able to add some pieces to the puzzle in the secondary to get this team over the hump.

As Steeler fans were greedy. Were just lucky enough that rebuilding still brought us a division title last year and hopefully another 10-6 season with a playoff berth.

To be honest im kinda down on Dupree...I thought he'd have a better showing...especially on obvious passing downs.....these 1st round LBers are killing us.

Tombert's rebuilding would be nice if they could do better than three consecutive first round picks on LB's who are no better than adequate and a DB with any talent at all since they drafted Willie Gay in 2007.

If we don't get back into the habit of hitting on these first rounders, the rebuilding process is going to be longer than yinz think.

Oh how true this is!

Like I said sometimes you have to be a little lucky. We take Revis if the Jets don't trade up before us.. that pick alone changes everything. Even two years ago we set to take ODB imagine him in our WR core probably don't take Bryant or Archer. Even when we got Ben we sucked just enough to get Ben. Even though there were other teams desperately trying to move in front of us to take him.

I agree with the rebuilding and the cap hell, but some here think a rebuilding is a two year project. IT's not as it takes as long as it takes for the talent to be replaced. In our case it is taking a much longer time than WE, as STEELERS fans, want. Tomlin and co. have missed to a greater degree, than other coaches, thus seeming the extended building process. WE NEED TO HIT on this draft as the time for a pass is beyond and he needs graded on his talent developement in the process of keeping his job.

Since 2007 67% of the Steelers 1st round draft picks have been spent on the defense and it sucks.

Including several OLBs in the first 3 rounds, with only 1 panning out for a couple of seasons. If they had drafted better pass rushers, the DBs don't look nearly as bad (though they are).

The Steelers never go through a true rebuild. They re-tool along the way. Nobody thought they were rebuilding 3 years ago, 2 years ago etc... They say that now after the season. BTW how can they be in a rebuild mode when 5 of their front 7 are #1 picks and 1 is a 2nd round pick? What part of the offense is being rebuilt? You going to scrap the WRs, RBs, OL, Qbs? Nope.

This team is not nor has gone through a rebuilding season. They plug in players via FA to fill the gap between the draft picks. They expect to win every year. If I were to say "next year is a rebuilding season" not one person on here would believe it. It's only done in hindsight.

I was watching a show on ESPN talking about recent drafts. It was kind of shocking, well maybe not, the number of 1st round players that were busts or just didn't live up to the hype. Seems to me, more often than not those first round players just don't pan out. And that's not just a steeler problem.

This team has been "rebuilding," based on the loose definition of it many around here use, for about four seasons now.

During that span, they've still had more than enough talent to at least win a playoff game or two during that span.

Tomlin and Colbert are masters of keeping the window open just enough to give fans hope, only to proceed to slam it on our fingers.

It's been that way forever, but the Steelers were largely one of the exceptions, which was a big reason why they played in all those AFCC games and Superbowls.

It's all relative.

I've never been a proponent of using other teams' failures as an excuse.

Potentially using three straight number one picks on the same position without an impact player is how one risks becoming the Browns.

Now why has the trend stopped?

bad luck?

or someone making the decisions that wasn't making them before

I think I know the answer..........

Obviously you didnt read my post. They built the offense isn't a juggernaut but they haven't been able to draft well enough on the defensive side. They can't add players through free agency cause we were in cap hell from pushing back contracts of players such as TP AND still paying Woodley. They missed on picks like Allen and Brown along with later picks like Butler and Hawthorne.

Its taking longer to rebuild cause coaches didnt let the younger guys develop. The Steelers piggy backed on aging vets for far too long to even consider that game experience helps too. Look at guys like Wallace, Mendenhall, Woodley, Timmons, Tuitt, Heyward. They all contributed cause they got on the field. When guys like Hines, Aaron Smith, Polamalu and company were declining and past their shelf life. They were still listed as starters. Throw the back up in as a starter and let them grow. My opinion

No they add players in free agency

just the wrong ones

and I don't buy into they can't bring in one significant free agent... they do it when they feel like it

and one a offseason wouldn't break the bank especially with knowing how to backload and bonus up a a attractive offer.

I think it is they simply think they can make do with cast offs.....

I think it is more that and hoping one of the draft picks pans out on D, which hasn't been happening for the most part.

Yep and the issue is as the veterans on defense retired, they had no one in place ready to "retool" the defense. It shouldn't have mattered all that much given they have six players in the front seven that are first or second round picks, yet not one of them is a true impact player--at least not in the sense that we came to expect.

Deangelo Williams , Mike mitchell, cotchery, even fister wallace have been more than serviceable. You can count the return of Willie gay in the FA group.

Exactly..

So there is no reason a SS and a CB and even possibly a OLber can't be brought in.

Get rid of the dead weight restructure a few contracts and fix these problematic areas..

At least one of those two positions will be addressed on the first two rounds I think

In the past the Steelers drafts no 1's were producing not so much now. Sure they might address it. But I am not confident that approach will be the quicker fixer upper.

I think we are frustrated because of our expectations. And rightfully so.. but

Outside of New England (because they cheat) what NFL organization is doing a better job? Just throwing it out there....maybe GB...maybe Seattle...??

What top organization with a franchise QB has missed the last 4/5 playoffs?
