Ok. I've been watching our beloved Steelers for some time. This aint my first rodeo and I know it isn't your either.
Every year we see the preseason hoopla. We get all excited about Rookie this or camp breakout that. We see a quarter or two from the starters and we feel like "By Golly, this is something special!"
And then the season starts.
Let me break this down for you. Mike Tomlin is NOT a morning person. Mike is NOT going to wake up until October. The Steelers may win tonight. It's possible. But it's far more likely, particularly with the suspensions, the injuries and the history of Tomlin's early season lethargy that the team will limp out of the gate for the first few games.
For whatever reason, the Steelers just don't have a killer instinct until late in the slasher film when the young "near virgin" is being stalked by the ruthless killer and she has to make some bold choices and do some pretty ruthless **** herself to survive. That's the Steelers.
Early on, they're the dopey kids getting sliced and bludgeoned and gutted at every turn because they're too busy smokin' dope or hooking up in tents with a serial killer (cough cough Burfict) on the loose.
At some point Mike Tomlin needs to figure out that the first 3 or 4 games of the season count too and that the team actually needs to be ready to play in early September. That'd be awesome. But I really don't expect it. I'd love it. I'll be thrilled if I see it. But I don't expect it.
Will the offense do ok? Probably. And by ok, I really mean, Ok. Will the defense be respectable? I'm not that confident there. I expect the Run Defense will do it's job. However I expect the Pass Defense will allow the usual 350+ yards per game and 20+ points. Not necessarily because the defense is terrible. But because the team just isn't ready. They don't have the killer instinct necessary to put their foot on the other guy's throats and press for 59 minutes. We don't even need 60, we just need 59. Give them a minute of happy feel-good time. Then spend the rest of the game making them feel as though the huns have invaded their homeland and are pillaging their villages and taking their women and children and that there is nothing whatsoever they can do about it.
That would be frickin awesome.
Instead, we'll probably see Tomlin standing on the sideline with his arms crossed watching passively as the Redskins methodically move the ball downfield to get into scoring position on 4 out of 5 possessions in the first half. Then we'll see the amazing non-adjustments in the 2nd half. We'll merely need to rely on the fact that the other teams adjustments suck *** worse than the Steelers non-adjustments.
Anyway, here's hoping I'm completely off on the slow start this year and that things get off really really well. Mike, by all means unleash purgatory!
