The ESPN reporter Tweeted later in the day that Landry Jones has also “garnered interest from some NFL teams”, according to his sources, though he did add that moving Jones would be tough because of his experience. It’s actually somewhat ambiguous what he means by that. Would teams be reluctant to take him on, or would the Steelers be reluctant to move him?

Either way, it is a fairly predictable outcome. When a team has an evident excess of talent at a position, it is going to attract some attention. The Steelers appear to have four viable quarterbacks worthy of a roster spot, so it’s only natural that some teams will have expressed interest in possibly acquiring one of the players more likely to be moved

If Bell fails to report, or the situation just sours to a tipping point, I can see Jones traded for a veteran back up running back, or a draft pick.

Is the difference between Jones now and Rudolph and Dobbs that great? I would say there is a difference right now, but by October the gap will shrink and soon Rudolph will pass him.

Supposedly there is interest out there in Dobbs as well.

I'd love to trade Jones, would much rather ride with Dobbs. Honestly, if you could get a decent offer for Dobbs (5th or 6th) I'd consider trading him too. Cardale Jones will likely be cut by the Chargers. I've always wanted to see what he could do behind Ben.

Yeah I was wondering which one of these would be preferable:

A. Trade Jones, keep Ben, Rudolph, Dobbs
B. Trade Dobbs, keep Ben, Jones, Rudolph

I guess the question is do we get more (higher pick / better player) in return for Jones or Dobbs. I would guess Jones.

What is going to change from now until Oct? I’ll tell you what. Ben will get 80% of the snaps during the week. Landry 20%. Borrowing injury to either those two, Mason will be performing the scout team duties. The will be a no reduction “in the gap” between the two.

He will be learning from two experienced QBs from the sideline. The mental part of the game.

I don't know why anyone would trade for any of our backups? All they have to do is wait a few days and we probably will be cutting one.

This is a if Landry Jones is traded thread.

What's going to change in two months? If Jones is traded Rudolph gets a lot more reps and practice. Young players tend to improve a bit with practice. In addition two extra months with the coaches, reviewing game films, and becoming more familiar with the playbook can help any young QB. That's what can change.

Do you agree with the above?

Rudolph has some work to do. In the Titans game, he played a lot of small-ball with quick dumpoffs to Conner and Samuels. He was more skittish in the pocket than I like for our QB.

I definitely want the Steelers to keep him, but I would be nervous as hell if he had to start. The 1994-1995, 2004-2005 Steelers defenses could compete and win with a current Mason Rudolph at QB. I don't think the current defense could do so.

The team should trade the either Dobbs or Jones based upon the best offer.

I'm sure they are looking to move one. I doubt it is for a veteran back. Who would you get over Riddley if you just wanted experience. That someone wanted to get rid of.

so they wouldnt have to go through the waiver process.

Do I agree with your scenario? No. I respectfully disagree.

First off Landry isn’t being traded. It’s been discussed since last year when Dobbs was drafted that Ben is more comfortable during games because Landry can see things on the sidelines that Ben can’t see. He always asks for input from Landry when he’s coming off the field because Landry knows the offense about as well as Ben does. It’s like having a second pair of eyes looking at the formations & coverages, etc. He wouldn’t have that comfort level or confidence with two guys who doesn’t have that command of the offense to see things like a veteran offers.

Second, from the games themselves, Dobbs has outperformed Rudolph this preseason. Mason is playing like Dobbs did last year. He has gotten better with each game prep. Dobbs has shown much more consistency and understanding of the offensive scheme, check downs, patience...etc. His TD to Patterson was a good example. Stepping out of the pocket and rifling the pass was a smart play. Last year Dobbs would have kept the ball and ran. So Joshua has shown much promise to be a competent signal caller. However, I expect Mason if he doesn’t get any snaps this year to be much farther ahead next training camp than Dobbs was this year. He has a higher ceiling than Dobbs, plain and simple.

Hopefully a phantom injury occurs and Dobbs is placed on IR. But CAR will be looking at Dobbs and one of our corners for a possible trade. Their QB situation behind Newton is laughable at best...and Dobbs skill set may actually mirror Newton’s offense better. CAR also needs another corner. So watch who gets a lot of snaps tonight. I’ve heard Sensabaugh has been floating on the writers sheet as trade block material.

I would trade Jones AND Dobbs because I hate carrying 3 QBs that much.

EDIT: I would would also trade Rudolph next year if he did not show dramatic improvement.

Alright people...The man is right on point here....

If I'm the Steelers, I'm seriously thinking about keeping Dobbs and Rudolph and letting Landry go.

I would rather have either one of them in the game then "below average Landry"

Times have changed and the steelers may deal one of them, but often their move is to cut the guy and let him go where he wants.... Here is the thing.. they are extremely high on Rudolph... so he is going nowhere. Laundry is a vet backup and they love those for clipboard related duties... Dobbs isn’t helping ben scope defensive strategies yet... they probably won’t want to put any young arms ahead of Rudolph ... they probably just cut Dobbs... thats the conservative nice thing to do, so its the most likely...

That´s quite exactly what I wanted to write, too. They have invested much in Landry, he ist the most experienced backup QB we have. Cutting Dobbs sounds like the typical Steelers thing to do.

Worst case Hines and Randle El both can play QB, as well. ;-)

Last week a lot of people here spoke differently and I WAS (past tense) one of those. I should have stuck with my gut feeling as NOW there is no time like trade Landry time.

Salute the nation

If they trade Landry Jones it costs us 700k in signing bonus. We can eat that all day. If there’s actual interest in Jones I would trade him all day long for a freaking 7th. I wouldn’t trade Dobbs for less than a third at this point. And I sure as hell don’t cut Dobbs or Rudolph.
