First & foremost, I take my hat off to a phenomenal season for the Baltimore Ravens. They are indeed having one of those very “special” seasons where are you can just feel the difference, the ball bounces your way, the chemistry and the confidence.
Throughout 2005 and 2008 that was a feeling that we as Steeler fans definitely felt.
That being said, Baltimore better get it done this year because that window with Lamar Jackson is going to be very limited.
I don’t care that he’s going to win the MVP. Quite frankly so once did the likes of Brian Sipe, Rich Gannon, Steve McNair & Cam Newton.
Ben Roethlisberger & Drew Brees never won an MVP despite being All-Time greats. Who would you rather have?
I don’t care that he led the league in touchdown passes with 36. It was only four years ago that Blake Bortles through 35 touchdown passes. How did he turn out?
The simple fact is Jackson is a great running back who can throw the football at an NFL level. I’m not sitting here hoping that he gets injured, but it is incredibly naïve to expect that he can maintain the pace of his play without taking hits that while do not cause “injury” but do not result in “hurting”.
Perhaps were the one team that knew how to play him this year (thanks again Minkah Fitzpatrick) — but despite all the praise that he has lumped upon him, it’s never pointed out how the Ravens have played almost the entire season either with the lead or in a one score game.
Passing the ball when there is little threat of the offense running gets a lot tougher. Some of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history have struggled without the threat of a running game (including Big Ben, Terry Bradshaw, John Elway, Brett Favre and more.)
The viability of Jackson keeping defenses off-balance with that speed of his has sustainability of 2-3 years max.
Just look at Le’Veon Bell: what he did in 2014, 2015 and 2016 was incredible. And while the pure statistics did not reveal it in 2017, we all saw that slow down and now he’s as pedestrian as any back in the NFL. These guys are just too big too fast and too strong to last taking hits from.
So as bizarre as it might say good luck Baltimore. This is your shot and if you don’t win it it will be a year that will be hard to shake.
Lord knows as Steelers fans we’ve had our share of those seasons too.
