Allen came out of high school as the top overall QB prospect and started off at Texas A&M. He played a lot as a true freshman compiling 1322 yards 16 tds and 7 ints. His final game as a true freshman in the liberty bowl he had 294 yards passing, threw for 4 tds to 1 int and then put 33 more yards on the ground with a td vs a good West Virginia team.
His sophomore season started out phenomenal until the bama game where he threw three picks to one td and was knocked around a lot. Got hurt and was up and down after.
He then decided to transfer Houston where he split time with two other qbs. He jumped ship again and is headed pro.
Strengths- quick release, nimble feet, very accurate within 25 yards, nice touch, leads receivers, can escape pressure and scramble but keeps eyes down field. Adjusts release points as needed while throwing on the run.
Weaknesses- arm is not elite and will have to rely on timing and accuracy. Under throws deep balls. Not the biggest QB and not sure he can take an NFL pounding. Decision making needs drastic improvement.
My opinion- his potential is high and though I believe you’d have to build your offense around his strengths I think he could keep the chains moving and extend drives. I doubt he gets drafted so I’d be happy bringing him in camp as an UDFA and put him on the PS. That way 2018 Ben, Jones and Dobbs. 2019 Ben, Dobbs, Allen and perhaps draft pick. I’d prefer that over going QB in the first this year.
Ceiling- Drew Brees. Floor- Johnny Manziel. Yes, he has Brees type accuracy and touch but Brees can still throw some down field with accuracy and that’s where Allen needs work.
