He became the straw that stirs the drink in a flash. A lot of teams are looking for that "one guy". The overwhelming majority that one guy is the qb. The Steelers haven't had that guy on defense since Troy. James Harrison was the other one.

I wonder if they would have traded for him if Ben didn't get hurt?

Davis' injury put a stamp on the trade. The need would have been there still. I would like to think the answer would still be yes. But you wonder if the club would be as aggressive with a healthy BigBen.

Tomlin himself said they call the "D" differently when BEN is playing???? WTF???? Would they need FITZ if Ben was playing or would we have gotten the last ten years or so crappy defense and been acceptable?

MAKE no mistake they needed FITZPATRICK with a healthy or un-healthy BEN.

With or without Ben, the decision was made when we lost Sean Davis for the year.

The decision may have been made, but does Miami trade with the Steelers if they didn't think they'd be a top 10 drafting team?

It's hard to say, as the Dolphins' hand was forced as Fitzpatrick made it clear that he did not want to play for them anymore.

I imagine the interest in Fitzpatrick was pretty significant, given the potential he showed as a rookie.

Excellent point. Miami did field a few offers, but decided on Pit due to The Steelers being without Ben.

Though the Steelers were making an offer regardless. Really interesting to think about!

Kudos to KC for seizing the opportunity, similar to what happened with Joe Haden. When talent became available he jumped on it without having to outbid anyone in FA with overpriced contracts
