Jets hire ex-Steeler Ward as offensive assistan
ESPN
The New York Jets have hired former NFL wide receiver Hines Ward as a full-time offensive assistant.

Ward was one of the team's four Bill Walsh coaching interns and spent training camp working with Jets wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson.

"He's a great resource because he's done it at a high level consistently," Jets receiver Robby Anderson said. "He's a future Hall of Famer so what more can I ask for? I'm picking his brain, and he's more so telling me than I'm asking him, and I'm just staying on top of him. He's just trying to find ways to get me better in each way."

Ward spent all 14 seasons of his playing career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who drafted him in the third round out of Georgia.

A two-time Super Bowl champion and the MVP of Super Bowl XL, Ward amassed 1,000 catches for 12,083 yards with 85 receiving touchdowns in his career.

Ward always did a nice job coaching up the younger receivers when he was on the team, so it's no surprise he eventually went the coaching route. I always thought he'd be excellent at the college level.

Quick without google somebody name a Steeler offensive assistant...

He isn't the OC. He's just an assistant that will probably work with the WRs. He maybe an OC one day but he isn't going to morph the Dulphins into a great offense. It was a good hire but not earth shattering.

Leftwich? or do you mean an OC on the Steelers ;)

Hines is not without controversy, he has been in the news as much as anybody but he has always optimized the work ethic that was traditionally tried to breed into the local culture.

You're right about not morphing the Dolphins, as he is working for the jets. Maybe in the future he might get s dolphin stint. J/K yaz

I think it's a great hire by a team that needs a great hire. We could use him here as well.

Shaun Sarrett - OL (forget the assistant's name, but he played for the Patriots)
James Daniels - TE
Ray Sherman - WR
Eddie Faulkner - RB

So is Hines a position coach? Or is he the assistant to the OC? Or is the assistant OC?

I remember that vividly.
That was right after a meeting when Jerome Bettis said he was done and would retire. Glad he stuck around one more season.

No idea how Hines will do as a coach. He knows what it takes to make a difference. We'll see. Would love to be a fly on the wall when he talks to Bell. Those are totally different guys.

This is a guy that will not look right in any other color. Should have hired him at home first.
