Playing not to get hurt? I don't know what it is about him. You keep waiting for the light to come on but it hasn't yet. Still gets pushed around, can't set the edge on runs, gets swatted away like a butterfly on the pass rush. same same

It's his 3rd year. He's played in 21 games and has exactly 3 QB hits. Where's the strength/speed/explosion we've come to expect from great Steelers LBs?

He better start showing it or he can go join Ziggy Hood on the Jags and win 3 games a year for awhile.

He does look a little less skinny this year - hope that helps him

We are Jones-in for some Jarvis, but that bulb might be faulty.

It is barely flickering.

So not sure the light will ever come on..............

I still can't get over all the draft niks on this site spouted off exactly why he wouldn't be any good and they were exactly right. I always held out hope...but doesn't look good. :(

what is he going to be 26 this season ?

I though this year Jones would get pushed to put up or shut up, so far shut up. No mention of his name in two games has shown no improvement on the rush, gets pushed aside as if no effort on Jones part. Slow slow slow. .

Nope. Time to move on.

I know it's preseason but watching these games it seems like we have the same problem. None of our edge rushers can win the battles. They look like they're trying really hard, but it's just not getting home. I honestly don't know what to say at this point. If they all have the same problem, can it be that the blitzes are just too predictable? Can it be that nobody is coaching the right technique into them? But wasn't Butler here when our edge rushers were terrorizing? And shouldn't Porter help with that? Do they really all just SUCK THAT BAD?!

slow and weak guys usually don't make good olbs so I would say yeah they're hat bad

Year 1: Thrown to the wolves by Lebeau.
Year 2: Breaks wrist early in the season..
Year 3: Still having mobility issues with wrist.(Coaching staff easing him into preseason games)

Come on guys. Give him a fair shake.

Only the most pathetic of homers(of which there are a ton on this site unfortunately) thought Jones would amount to much. If anybody cared to take the time to look at him and see his massive limitations they would've seen he wouldn't be very good. Too bad the steelers were asleep at the wheel for this one. It's set us back a few years.

Thank god you're here now.

The light coming on refers to a player where they have the physical capabilities, but they are thinking too much and it is slowing them down. I don't think that is the case with Jarvis. He was put into the starting roster early because he played 3-4 OLB extensively in college. He had the pedigree so to speak. Problem is that he doesn't have the physical tools.

It is impossible to argue with all of you know it alls, but JJ wasn't as bad as you make him out. He let the qb get around him on the TD. Otherwise, he held his ground on the edge.

As for the pass rush, I have news for you. Until the Steelers can cover someone even a little bit, you could have JJ Watt out there and it wouldn't make much difference. They have been running the defense for so long, teams just do 3 and 5 step drops and get it out. Until they can get guys who can hold coverage a little and disrupt the timing of these throws, JJ and even Harrison are going to struggle to get sacks/pressure.

So what you're saying is the first rnd pick can only get coverage sacks

I think what he said is if the QB gets rid of the ball with in a couple of seconds it doesn't matter who we have...no one will get to him. It is why I am hoping our Dline can generate a push up the middle. It will help take the quick plant and throw play....or I hope it will.

I am an official Jarvis Jones hater so I see it differently.
Year 1: Weak, slow, useless.
Year 2: Weak, slow, injured, useless.
Year 3: Back to weak, slow, useless

As hard as I am on the pass rushers in my previous post, this is also true. How can you rush the passer when the ball is out immediately after the snap on most plays?

I root for ALL steelers on the team, but do realize some are better than others.

Hmmmmmmm guess it was worth saying twice..................................

Plenty of other teams get sacks. Do QBs only get rid of it quickly vs the steelers?

Here is the difference. A QB gets rid of the ball quickly vs a good pass rush team because he must. This allows the DBs to play tighter, take more chances, and make it hard to move the ball.

Against the steelers, QBs throw quickly by choice. They also have the choice to hold it and burn the secondary deep. This means the steeler secondary can't play it too tight. They have to cover deep and this opens up the quick throws.

It all starts with pass rush. Legion of Boom ain't **** without a pass rush.

I don't want to hear about how well Jarvis sets the edge in the run. You could play Cam Thomas at OLB if that's all you want.

Jarvis has been terrible. What's his excuse for sucking this preseason. Even reading camp reports, i've never read one that says Jarvis looked great today. The camp reports i read have him getting stuffed by Villanueva and Van Dyke in practice. Then that carries over to games.

What bothers me is that Jarvis is sitting on the side with pads off with the rest of the established starters before the 1st quarter is over. Tomlin had Shazier working his *** off. But not Jarvis. Let Jarvis chill on the sideline like he doesn't need the game reps.

so how did Harrison get a sack?

My big problem with the criticism that Jarvis Jones gets, and Landry Jones in the other thread, is there is always an undercurrent of something else. It can't just be that these guys don't have it. It has to be this analysis of the Tomlin/Colbert drafting philosophy which goes across the spectrum from "they suck" to some deep thoughts about player/cost ratio analysis or something.

I didn't like the Jarvis Jones pick, either, but I don't think Tomlin and Colbert should be fired over it. They all make mistakes. However, in that draft, while they didn't do a great job with the 1st rounder, do they get any credit for drafting arguable the best player in the whole draft in RD2? At least this argument makes more sense than a whole thread on a 3rd string QB.

I do also think pressure and coverage go hand and hand. Sure, an OLB just has to beat a tackle quickly for a sack every now and then like Harrison did the other night. He is special, though. As special as he is, imagine how many more he might have if they can simply disrupt the timing of throws a little by making the QB hold that ball, just a little. They do that by holding that initial coverage.

I'm with you on the above quote, when I saw JJ on the sideline as if he had accomplished something and Shazier was still working his tail off, I thought that JJ was injured again. There was no reason for him to be chilling with the ones after his performance in that game. As a matter of fact, JH should be the starting ROLB based on what I saw and JH didn't look great against the run, but he did have the sack.

To answer the OP's title of the thread question. Asking if the light will come on indicates that the player is physically able to compete, but the game is still moving too fast for him. I'm not necessarily sure that is the case with JJ. The light could come on like a 1,000 watt bulb, but it doesn't appear that physically JJ is capable of performing at a high enough level in the NFL, IMO.
