Conner’s been a popular name during Steelers OTAs and minicamp. Here’s what Tomlin had to say.

“It’s been fun to watch James because he’s a classic example of a guy who’s in his second year, second lap around the track, if you will…It really looks like the transformation that Le’Veon went through as a young guy in terms of his level of conditioning and the things that he’s able to display to this point on the field.”

Ramon Foster, who has a good track record on his spring predictions, mentioned Conner too.

“He’s made two or three combat catches in the end zone, back-shoulder fades and jump-balls where you’re like, ‘this kid’s got something,’ receiver stuff, which is huge.”

Conner is likely going to get a huge opportunity in training camp, assuming Bell doesn’t get his new contract and skips out on the preseason. That’ll put Conner in the driving seat, for a little while anyway, and we’ll see how much of a jump he’s made. His rookie season was a difficult one, marred by issues in pass pro and a torn MCL that ended his season, but Conner seems all the more motivated this time around.

I think after his injury he thought, " I'll be back."

And now you are seeing the fruits of that labor.

I think we are going to see a improved version of JC.

And I am stoked about that.

With all this kids been through, it's easy to root for him.

Hope he surprises us all, in a good way.

If Bell doesn't show until after camp, I would start Conner.

I think ALL of us would like to see this but I'm thinking our coaching staff will repeat last year. Jeepers, put some ******* motivaTION OUT THERE WILL YAZ COACH(S)

Salute the nation

great work ethic if bell starts game 1-4 rusty again, ride conner until bell is in synch with the line

Problem with that is that Bell won't get in synch with the line until he actually plays in game situations with the line.

That's what makes it frustrating from a fan standpoint. Sign a contract! Or at least the tag and get to camp.

last year week 1-3 he was not in synch so gm 1 split the carries, if he is not in synch give both conner and samuals the chance whoever gets us the best chance to win, gm 1 is a big trap game hostile environment even with thosands of our fans with haley knowing so much of our O our must be sharp and ben cant be rusty as well as the OL

You are not replacing Shazier with one guy. But maybe two- Dirty Red/ Bostic and Edmunds. You cannot replace Bell with one guy. But maybe 2 Conner and Samuels.

But I will remind everyone that if you were going to pick one trait that is probably the worst of Tomlin it would be managing a guys playing time/ big picture. He will get Bell out there and run the **** out of him and it is what it is. You could really see that when they had Blount who easily could have handled 1/3 or more of the touches.

I think everyone already knows this honestly. I did read somewhere that Conner wasn't in "football shape" as Tomlin put it and was a big reason why he didn't see more snaps last season. Maybe this year might be different. I have my doubts for the exact reason you stated, but Tomlin needs to see what he has in Conner during games...not practice. So he knows what he has because our draft next year will be affected one way or another on the play of Conner.

100 % agree. If Bell doesnt sign in the next week he will not be a Steeler next year. While you play for this year, you better know what you have for next. The whole thing with Harrison is a prime example of Tomlin not being able to manage play time.

The whole thing with Harrison was more a prime example of Deebo being a petty, spoiled, douche. Let's not re-write history to place all the blame on Tomlin.

I like the work ethic and attitude. I am still not convinced he is the answer to the Leveon Bell question though.

I certainly do not blame Tomlin for the way Harrison acted to secure his release from the team. That is all on James. I do blame Tomlin for the way he used Harrison. In my mind he was clearly the best third and long edge rusher on the defense and yet he sat there. I believe if he would have been used that way he would have carved out his role and all would have been good.

I would have been ok with them flipping Dupree and Watt last year. And then rotating Deebo with Dupree.

I just think how smoothly the Eagle rotated players. I think there definitely something not what it could be in regards to the way he uses players.

Hard not to agree there.

Tomlin is terrible at it. Cowher was not much better. Good with role player to role player but if a guy is a stud he has a hard time getting snaps to a good role player. The Blount thing was beyond ridiculous. You got a perfect complementary bulldozer to your slick do anything back. Unbelievable.
