James Conner - The Worst Starting RB in NFL?

Power football will never go out of style. What the titans did last year proved that. They just did not have enough to overcome weaknesses. With defenses getting softer and well most teams tackle like ***,it's the perfect time to bring the wood on the ground. I'm not sure the Steelers have guys who can run block at an elite level. They will have the passing game. They need to close it out late in games. Their defense has been of the same mindset for decades. Bring relentless pressure and get the other team off the field fast. That takes a ton of energy. The 60 minute men worked because they still had juice late in the games. The offense needs more than anything to eat clock later in games. They win a few superbowls with those squads if they have a top notch qb.

This year is ripe for the taking.

I hear what you are saying and like I said, the **** were an anomaly. The rules are to skewed to wards scoring stats. The3 **** won't be able to sustain but for a season or two. Don't get me wrong as I too love the ball control / finish out a game but games are designed to keep the viewer interested to the end (TV ratings).

Being on the sidelines hurt does not work in the game today. Tomlin continues to bring in RB's yet does not seem to use them in the situation where they can produce. One play here one play there how do you grade any running back the Steelers have.

James seems like a solid person, generous son and good teammate. All around good guy.
As a player, I don't like him at all. He has never stayed healthy and last season he was historically bad.

Yes he was terrible in a historical perspective, but his injury, and the injury to our only FB on the Roster with Nix (who only played 1 complete game healthy, all season, is the biggest reason for his terrible stats. Watch out with Watt leading the way, you guys are going to love him!

Look, he was a good player, but the reality is he's too injury prone, and fumbles too often. Don't look now out our OL is approaching a steep decline. Talent is down, we have some age issues, and we no longer have Munchak's coaching making it all work.

Straight up, I'd trade Conner and Ju-Ju for 2nd round picks if offered. Neither will be here in 2021. We need to watch our cap and re-load with draft picks.

The Steelers have a 2 year Superbowl window. Moving those guys today shuts that window.

I’m trying to think of a worse starting back and can’t so he must be near the bottom, just for comparison sake anyone got an example of a worse starting back for a team?

I think the window is this year only. Too many free agents next year, not enough cap space.

I can agree with that, so there is no way I'd move anyone this year, especially since no one opted out.

I maintain the team is as Ben goes. I have seen Steelers have a heavy free agent load and they resigned. Many play that cap card yearly and yet the Steelers twist and manipulate to stock the team at least the starters. Depth obviously suffers here and there. Next years challenge will be just that a challenge for many, and with the Steelers being a team that does well expect the nucleus to return. No the window is Big Ben. That is the true window. If he remains two years it is two years. If he stays only one then it is one. If he stays three then it is three. With how the Steelers habitually do business that just makes the most sense.

Slash, you are exactly right on this. Kahn (I think) is working on the cap process as we speak, yes that's next year's cap and plan on how to handle it. I'm sure that like anything in the NFL it isn't a spur of the moment decision and he has drawn ever conceivable scenerio as to what and who and how will affect the necessary needs of the team & CAP.

Ron Burgundy you are spot on!

Franco would let Rocky plow up the middle, take on a LB, and then Franco would slip around them and he was off to the races.

Most DBs were too small to stop him when he got out into the open.

As for Earl Campbell, remember when our DB Wagner met him head on and stopped him OUCH!!!

Jerome Bettis was like an M1 Abrahams tank in the 3rd and 4th quarters. A BIG MAN! Ray Lewis of the Ravens says Jerome was the toughest guy he had to tackle. Was like hitting a full grown Oak tree.

One thing people tend to underrate about Bettis was his footwork.

Despite most memorable plays being his power runs, he was a Hall of Fame RB & lasted as long as he did because of his ability to be more nimble afoot & could avoid the battering that other “power backs” could not.

Probably a major reason why a guy who carried the ball that much is in relatively good shape at 70 years old. You are absolutely correct that Franco ran hard when the yards were crucial, but would avoid punishment when there was little to be gained. We all enjoyed watching Earl Campbell fight for every yard as though his life depended on it, but damn, he's paid a high price for that style.

Another (as if it were needed) reason to dislike Jim Brown.

When he played in era of DL were nowhere near the level of size/strength they would be a decade later, to say nothing about LBs & DBs, and his criticism of Franco — would have loved to see him try that on Alan Page, Harvey Martin, Joe Greene etc. and the multiples of punishment his running style would handle before he was carried off the field.

Shame about Earl Campbell’s physical struggles now. The combination of his style and spinal stenosis restricting him to wheelchair — Jim Brown can go f¥€k himself.

Franco won rings & should have broken Brown’s record (1 of 3 admitted regrets by Dan Rooney) & still have better life than that *******
