I know there are a hundred first round pick threads, but I want to go on record as I did with Watt last year that I think, want and believe it will be Vander Esch. Why? Because he provides day one a piece that they need as a Sub Package linebacker against the pass with the long term projection of an every down linebacker. Bostic provides the short term solution as a run stopper with enough coverage to handle play action and then in the Dime Vander Esche will come in. As he gets into their weight room and works with their strength people he will fill into an every down linebacker by year two. Paint the bus black and Gold mom and dad!

I will go on record as saying I hate the pick in 1, and that he won't be who the Steelers want either. And I pimped Watt harder than anyone.

He will be gone before we pick.

I don't know about that. I was a pretty big advocate of Watt too. I think Vander Esch is gone before we pick. So who do you want in round one?

I'm on board with Van Der Esch if he is there. Most mocks now have him in the top 20 while Evans has mostly fallen out of the first into the early to mid-second round. But, who knows. I'd like to get one of them in the 1st, so if VDE isn't there, I'd still go Evans.

On that draft pick game, James Derwin has been falling to us. He'd be too hard to pass up at S.

There is always risers. But when the actual picks come in a couple teams would probably shy away top 20. Probably for the concerns that some have at 1.28. I like him to the Steelers cause Mayock likes him and to the Steelers. Of all the draftnicks I believe in Mayock the most. Plus they have been taking the guy that can help them now with the big upside. You arent gonna get a consensus guy at 28. You are getting a guy like this or a guy with a medical issue or you are getting a guy with a high floor low ceiling. They havent been taking the high floor guys. If he is there he is a Steeler.

Harrison or Payne. Or a RB. Obviously whomever the Steelers BPA is. Which it won't be Vander.

So your concern is low sample, low competition. I really like the way the dude moves. He seems to have a real nose for the ball. I think it would be real dangerous throwing it in Watts flat or his middle late. Tall long armed guys who can go up and get it. Plus in the tape I watched he seemed to sift through the junk and find the ball carrier.
When he gets there he has the frame to get a fit and take the guy down. He doesnt need to knife his legs out. And with his frame he just needs to add strength. Not bulk that will slow him down.

Isn't two concerns a bit much for a first rounder ?

.

At 4:09...he's thinking it may be the Steelers.

Isn't there plastic surgery available to correct those ears?

I still like Reid in the 1st

I think it is fair concern. I've been thinking it would be Evans right up until he didnt run. To me what is a linebacker. He needs to have the physical tools. Well his size, speed and agility checks out. He has to have the instincts. Well I guess Id have to see all the tape. But what Ive watched looks to me like it does. Motor? Id have to look at all the tape and speak with coaches. Jarvis Jones busted because he didnt have the speed, strength requirements. I dont think you can eliminate him because of where he played and who he played against. Take Evans. You could say, well he didnt run and he played with monsters who kept him clean. That's two things.

Of the two, I prefer Payne. We don't need another in the box safety type with so-so speed for coverage.

I would be more than happy with VDE.

He won’t make it to 28 as Dallas writers has him as Sean Lee’s replacement.

This has always been my formula. I rate players in a 1.0 - 10.0 rankings system. Saquon Barkley is the highest rated player I’ve had in ten years at 9.5. Normally the highest rated player is in the 8.5-9.0 range. Usually, the Steelers draft end of first and the players left are 6.0-7.0 range.
So my formula is this. If we have a glaring hole at a specific position I will take a player .3 below BPA. If BPA is .4 or greater than need I draft BPA and hope better value is there in the next round or two. If it’s a position of need due to impending contract, age of starter with retirement looming, or maybe quality of current player starting, I will draft .2 lower than BPA.

That being said I have ILB and CB as the only two needs that qualify as .3> BPA. I have safety at .2 as I feel Morgan Burnett will more than make up for the loss of Mitchell. But he’s probably a two year at best plays out his contract and we need depth behind he and Davis.
After that I have QB, OL, OLB, TE, and RB as positions that need addressed. Now if Bell does not sign an extension before the draft and as the GM I decide we will move on from him in 2019 RB would be a .2 need this year as well.

That said I have LVE rated at 7.1 which likely means he’s gone before #28.

I would love to get Vander Esch and that is my pick. High character, athletic, high ceiling, fills a major need. Just like Watt. Make it happen.

If we don't get him, the cheats will.

This would be 5 linebackers in the last 6 first round picks. Maybe whomever they end up taking will be faster than the guy sprinting the card up to the podium.
Jarvis-out of the league
Shazier-really freaking good
Dupree-Soon to be with Jarvis
Watt-Probably ends up being pretty good

I guess, lets hope that he's more Shazier/Watt than Alvin and Jar Jar.

While not what we wanted him to be, i dont think Bud joins Jarvis out of the league. Bud had as many sacks last year as Jarvis did in his whole tenure at Pittsburgh.

the nfl.com mocks have been updated with most of them having us taking VDE or Evans.

If it's between Evans and VDE, the Steelers 6 years ago would have taken Evans. Since that point, and the Jarvis draft. They've been drafting Sparq studs in multiple rounds, to get the most bang for their buck. Jarvis was a lesson that appears the Steelers learned from, so in this scenario, VDE would be a Steeler.
