Interesting........... Steelers Still Can Rescind On Bells Franchise Tag

Actually, we can rescind and would get a comp pick for him. However, since we acquired Bostic and others, the 3rd we would have gotten for Bell becomes a wash and we would get nothing.

They explained this on an ESPN article (I think) this morning.

So it would count as a free agency loss and factor in to the compensatory pick calculation. I wonder if they know how that would affect it - third rounder, like the article suggests, or what?

When you cut a player, you get ZERO compensation. This happens when teams make salary cuts, Joe Haden being one. Browns didn't get compensation from Haden leaving.

Rescinding the tag is a cut. It's not free agency, and Bell gets what he wants, the ablility to sign a long term contract this year, ain't happening. If Bell was rescinded, this argument may make some kind of sense, but the season started, his rights are retained, so rescinding is a cut, not releasing to free agency. No compensation would be awarded.

Also this article was written by someone that has very little knowledge of the actual rules or compensation numbers. Hubbard got paid ($5.8M Cap) to be the starter. Bostic ($1.5M cap) and Burnett ($2.4M Cap) are being paid much less. To say the Steelers are at a net neutral is idiotic from a compensation formula perspective. This isn't 2 guys leave in FA and 2 guys are signed, so no compensation. That's not how it works. The formula determines how good those players are that are lost vs gained, to see if there was an imbalance that needs added in the draft, and this is done by weighing both contracts.

Right now the Steelers are +1 in Free agency losses/gains, so by this silly reasoning the Steelers won't get a comp. That's not how it works. It works by the contract sizes earned by their new teams. Currently The Steelers have a year 1 cap of $3.9M vs losing a player that earned $5.8. The steelers are awarded a comp pick based on the net cost lost of $2M not the number of players lost. This should merit a 5th or 6th rd comp. I'm not sure exactly how it's done, but it's way more accurate than PFT.

Man I hate that site sometimes...
