Initial Thoughts - Jets game

In defense of that pass Calvin did make a Moss-like catch earlier in the game. Catch is going to be hard to make no matter who is attempting it if they are going to allow the defensive back to mug them.
They had an entire game to feel out what the refs were allowing and not allowing. No?

Don’t want to dampen the enthusiasm and excitement of the win today but the Jets ran all over this football team today and the Jets are not a good team. Defense made Fields look like an elite QB out there.
The Jets OL without their talented guard Vera Tucker pushed the defense all over the field and Tomlin and his lackey Austin had no answer.
The offense was saved by the veteran Rodgers and his quick release and timely throws with little help from a porous OL and absolutely no running game.
Of course the always reliable Boswell once again delivered the winning kick.
This team is not well coached and it shows. Inability to make adjustments, some questionable offensive playcalling at times continue to plague this team.
The highest paid defense by a lot for four consecutive seasons sure resembled last years defense that collapsed the last part of the season.
Idk yet what to think! OL and DL so far concern me. Don’t know if you can fix Broderick Jones as he was raw coming out of Georgia and does not appear he’s developed one bit.
It was a win so don’t want to take away from that but this could get real messy as the season progresses.
The Jets are not going to be a bad team. Even without one guard they have built a good line. Back to back first round tackles, a great RB and the threat of a running QB.

Not fair. Sasquatch is seen a lot more frequently. They do have the same number of career receptions, I guess so there's that.

Great win for the Steelers today.

Rodgers played about as well as anyone could have possibly expected. 22-30 for 244 and 4 touchdowns, and a 136.7 passer rating. He proved he can still play at a high level, and yet there are those here who will still refuse to acknowledge it. His arm is just fine; the problem is his 41-year-old legs. Although Rodgers had great success today, being strictly an immobile pocket passer is going to be hard to sustain over a full season. Especially since Broderick Jones is basically a turnstile at left tackle. Jesus, did the Steelers F this guy up, or what? Should have let him develop at LT, and never moved him to RT. He got owned today. Looks like another first round bust they actually traded up in the draft to select. Calvin Austin had a nice game and may well become a legit WR2.

The running game was as useless as a second dick, no surprise there. Maybe it wasn't all Najee's fault. I did like that Arthur Smith was mixing it up a bit more, throwing fairly often on first down. 34 points is great, but they're going to need to run the ball better going forward.

Special teams won the game today. Boswell, of course, and the huge play made by Gainwell to create the fumble on the kickoff. Gigantic swing in the game right there, and kudos to the offense for cashing it in with a touchdown.

The defense proved ol' MT right, as today was the first time that the New York Football Jets were not forced to punt in the first half of any game since at least 1991. "Historic," indeed. It was cringeworthy watching the Jets move the ball up and down the field for most of the game, but at least the Steelers made some plays on the last two possessions when they really needed it. Although Fields could have kept on running and made a first down easily on their last play, instead of putting Garrett Wilson in a tough spot. I did like Ramsey's physicality and passion throughout the game. I'll have to assess his play more closely when I re-watch the game, but I don't think it was his fault that they gave up 32 points. Where was Payton Wilson today? Can't recall any of the ILBs making plays, really. Heyward looks fat and slow, and should be ashamed of himself for his recent contract demands.

All in all, a fun game to watch. A lot more entertaining than the nonsense we saw on offense most of last season. Figured the Steelers were going to be much more interesting with Rodgers this year, and they did not disappoint.

The refs are unpredictable and inconsistent just about from play to play. There was no more risk in making that pass then as opposed to the first play of the game. Besides that there's a big difference between touchy feely fouls and those that appear to be flat out blatant/no question. That was a blatant flat out unquestionable interference call that was somehow not called (because he definitely didnt miss it) by the ref.

Jones was a project from the day he was drafted. He was a physical specimen but his technique was always questioned. He got away with stuff in college that doesn't fly in the pros. Add to that it appears he takes plays off and often doesn't play to the whistle and doesn't finish blocks. Those are work ethic problems. It's time people quit making excuses for him.

I am hoping that Brandon gives him a stern talking-to.

Had to record it and watch it this AM.

Its only one game, but Rodgers, wow. That was the best performance by a Steeler QB in years. Many years....

Still some O-line protection problems.

I just hope they can get the run defense shored up pretty quick.

After the night off, I thought more about Rodgers in yesterday's game. The dude still has plenty of arm, and he just seemed in control last night. We haven't had that kind of QB play since before Ben got injured. I hope the OL, especially Jones, can figure things out because keeping him upright and having some semblance of a run game are key to the season. It was fun watching him sling the ball around.

Jones was terrible, giving up 2 sacks and more pressures. If he doesn't improve, I can't see them giving him much beyond the bye week to have things rectified or they need to go to a backup who may not have the upside but is at least more consistent.

what i dont understand is, the coaches see B. Jones struggling on every play ( i watched him personally give of 3 sacks). Not one time was help moved to his side of the line, Rb chip, washington chip and release, just continued to get the Qb mauled out there.

The Jets are still the Jets! They will have 16 more opportunities to lend credibility to your claims about them being a good team. We shall see!

after a day, and skimming through this thread...

before the game started, this season is going to be a success. why? well, either we win the Super Bowl, we get another Tomlinship OR we suck so bad that we get a high draft pick and Tomlin is shuttled off to CBS to coach speak before games.

as for the game:
Our OL couldn't block a slightly determined Girl Scout troop on a first week cookie drive. I don't know what Pat Meyer has on anyone up high in the FO, but dude needs to go. 53 yards rushing on 20 total carries is putrid. Or, if you remove Aaron's one yard loss, 19 carries for 54 yards. WTAF?! THIS is not Steeler football. Gainwell was a free agent pickup and started the game. WTAF Part 2. He had just 4 carries less than Warren's 11. Unbelievable that our lead back would only get 11 carries.

While it was "just the Jets", Aaron did have a solid game. 136.7 QB rating is hard to argue against. For all his TDs, he did look rather slow. Though, also at his age, he knows when to find a soft spot to throw himself on before taking a hard hit. He's not Kent Graham statuesque, but certainly won't fool anyone on a QB rollout. On the other hand, Fields looked pretty damn good. Though, he was throwing against our "defense". I still wonder how he'd have panned out had we actually built around him. Russell Wilson was simply awful yesterday. And that's with Malik Nabers and a handful of guys we were linked to trading for last season.

Jonnu made a TD score, and while it's appreciative, his 5-15-1 left much to be desired after we traded for him.
CA3 proved he can play in this league. He made some good catches and ran good routes.
Side note: Anyone seen Roman Who?!son - we might need to put him on a milk carton.

As for our defense. Jesus Christ himself couldn't fix this shambles of a DL.
For a dude who bitched like a ***** bitching about a new contract, Cam sure showed up in excellent shape. That's a gut that would make Coolie's look trim.
It was particularly refreshing seeing Ekuale on the DL backed up to our goal line. Then we gave up the score. I was also thrilled to see Sawyer in at that time. Exciting knowing the RB is going to get in (that's pure sarcasm for you people slow on the take).

Boz. What else is there to say? Clearly the best kicker we've ever had.

Aaron Rodgers who I had my doubts about played a masterful game yesterday.
Tomlin needs to direct his attention to fixing his defense he assembled and stay the **** away from the offense. Let Rodgers and Arthur Smith run that side of the ball, especially Rodgers.
Did y’all see how many times he audibled at the line of scrimmage? He really is the epitome of a field general and knows how to run an offense.
Uses the entire field spreading the ball around to multiple receivers. Tomlin needs to stay away from the offense and not **** it up. Go fix your historic defense.

First off, that was a fun game to watch...it was actually entertaining for once. Some negatives that I saw, just some of them.

1. Peyton Wilson and Patrick Queen are outstanding in coverage but absolutely suck at identifying gaps and shedding blocks.
2. Caleb Johnson returning kicks...WTF is Bubbles thinking? He just doesn't have breakaway speed
3. Broderick Jones had a tough task in McDonald, but he also looked sloppy in his footwork, technique, and generally uncomfortable. How do you allow a 245lb edge rusher bull rush you onto your ***?
4. The Referees were absolute **** all afternoon. At one point, Ian even called out an obvious hold against the Jets during his play by play and no laundry was thrown. Unreal.

My two pennies......

1) Tomlin and his yes-men coaching staff suuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. They ALL need to go yesterday. The players have been bailing this waste of oxygen and semen out for almost 2 decades. HCCSMT is neither a motivator nor a teacher. He feels he has to stick his nose in EVERYTHING instead of delegating. This is why his coaching tree looks like Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree on the final page of the novel. And for those unfamiliar, it's a stump.
2) Zach Frazier looks like another TJ Watt-esque player. NOT comparing the greatness. But it appears Tomlin and his buffoonery will NOT be able to F him up. He looks like the REAL deal. But he unfortunately cannot do it himself, and the rest of the line looks AWFUL and INCORRIGIBLE. I see a lot of talk about "the talent is there/he's a project/just needs to work on _______". Let me shake the ol' 8-Ball. Oh, look! It says, "NOT FN LIKELY" that it will happen under this Temu coaching staff. They don't develop their talent. We have just had amazing scouting departments and GMs able to draft guys that are awesome and can play above the incompetence.
3) Rodgers does indeed look like he can still go. But I'm seeing the same playcalling as last year. No deep downfield shots and not too much, if at all. over the middle. This is Tomlin coaching scared, as usual, but is it also the arm strength of Rodgers? I don't think so, and think it's on conservative dummy Tomlin, but I can't say that with any certainty.
4) Glad to see our league leading in salary D picked up RIGHT where they left off last year getting GOUGED on the ground and having no answer. Can Harmon be the start of that answer? We better hope and pray he is, or it's gonna get REAL ugly for the Steelers this year.
5) Boz - God love and bless you, sir. Never gets the proper love he deserves. Thank you for your continued excellence and reliability.
