You can't play defense anymore. They must have got 8 illegal contact/ holding penalties. At least three of them were on big emotional jailbreak blitzes where it didn't matter what happened on the backend. It was going to be a sack.
 
This was exactly the game the NFL and Goodell want to see. Will be the norm in a couple years. No thanks
 
They showed a graphic at one point that showed the number of penalties in 2013 versus 2014 for certain infractions. Some of them, like illegal contact, had tripled. Pass interference had doubled.

This is KILLING football.

The penalties make the game very hard to watch. Very hard.
 
Name corners - those with Pro-Bowl appearances, and publicity, and commercials - get away with a ton of contact. Seriously, watch Sherman, or Peterson, or Revis. They are allowed a lot of contact.

That is part of the reason, I think, why having well-known CB's is crucial. I know that refs are not supposed to care who the defender is, but even a passing comparison of the contact a name CB is allowed compared to a nobody makes the point.

And the Steelers have 3 non-name CB's. They get no leeway in terms of contact after 5 yards. I particularly liked the one call where the receiver was hit maybe 7 yards from the LOS.

Yeah, that **** never happens without a flag.
 
Cortez Allen.showed.promise his first three yrs in the league. With the refs focusing on.illegal contact... actually placing an.emphasis on it, he's been affected quite a bit...I.don't believe you go.from promise to horrendous overnight .....

This type of.game.is what the league gets a boner over...85 pts....over 1000 yrds total offense.... penalties keep drives alive....u.can call illegal contact every pass play....it's.the great EQUALIZER....
 
In the NFL, you have to outscore your opponent. The Steelers can do that now.
 
Here is my laundry list.
The Steelers incurred 7 illegal contact/ defensive holding/ hands to the face penalties. Indy had like 4 or 5 all but one was declined because of the result of the play. Though indy took a horrendous PI call prior to the Blount fumble.
If you put offensive holding to this standard you would have a complete mess. The games optics would be ruined (as they are now).
Polamalu was illegally blocked in the first quarter when he was engaged with a lineman and then cut by the back.
I need to get on one of those ask the Refs deals. Since when are live ball fouls like defensive holding tacked onto the end of plays like when Luck was a yard short of a first down. That should have been first down five yards from the original LOS or 4- 1 from where he went down. You can't have both or they should have tacked on 5 yards to the end of all of the declined illegal contact penalties that Indy got.
The playoffs will end very controversial for more than one team do to this interpretation of the rules.
Since when does 4-2-1 Best 5-3 In the standings. Last I saw it is 2 points for a win one for a tie. Bengles have 9 points the Steelers Ravens have 10
 
I've never seen a sport where actual wins are compared to unplayable game. In the NHL they don't say team A has 24 wins, team b has 22 but has played three less games therefore b is in first.

Using winning percentage does make wins the most important thing. It ranks teams in order of the percentage of games they've won. And at this point, the Bengals have won a higher percentage. The fact that the Bengals have played fewer games is just nature. Once they've both completed all 16 games, it'll be different.
 
Whatever. My NHL analogy is directly on point. However, that is a minor irritant compared to the broader picture of what the NFL has become. I watched the Thurs night game. DENVER is up 14 driving on the goaline. Manning throws the linebacker undercut the route and one hand stabs the ball for an Interception. The player in the secondary had minor contact at between 4-6 yards. The contact had nothing to do with the plays outcome. Not a chance the receiver could have stopped the interception. Illegal contact. Next play TD. I immediately changed channels. Game ruined.
 
The team with fewer games hasn't had a chance to win as many games yet. You want to penalize them for having an early bye? Even when they've still won at a higher percentage?
 
Ok maybe the nhl is the only league that operates on your actual wins. Not on games you hypothetically could win or lose. Fill your boots.

That was a complete goat-f#$& by the referees. Seriously, the play AND the 5 yards from defensive holding? Guys doing effing Pop Warner games know better.
 
My real opinion was that something happened to that rule in the off season but I honestly can't seem to find it anywhere including the most recent rule and case book. This is like the third issue with live ball/dead ball fouls I've seen and these guys don't normally make that type of error. One would lead to a full memo going out. My gut tells me it was another lame rule change to help offense. But I ask myself this. Team A throws an Interception and is guilty of offensive holding. Does team b get the interception and 10 yes. Absolutely not. How was this different.

Doesn't every sport use winning percentage? Pretty sure they do.
 
With television one does not see all that can be seen from the high level game seats but it looked like the zebras were calling everything reasonably the same, I could be wrong. It seemed like lots of penalties were really ticky tack calls as opposed to the more blatant ones. It also seemed odd that many times when luck was hit or stopped or a good defensive stand was hung on them a penalty kept things alive. In contrast the same things were assessed against the colts but were declined as the result of the play was a first down. Just seemed a bit odd to me.

Ah, yes. here you are again. Out after the big game, singing the praises of the offense. Where were you when this vaunted offense was scoring 10pts a game?
 
Tom Jackson, on ESPN yesterday, said in a somber tone, "This is a dark, dark day in the NFL" when this is what defense has come to - in reference to these penalties, etc.
 
Does anybody see the irony that in many of these threads people comment on how well their fantasy teams are doing or about Bens monster game and this one is about how ridiculously pro offense the officiating has become?
