How Talented is Steeler Defense?

Never felt confident to stop a 3rd down all year. Defense should be 5 of our picks
 
Artie Burns is a man corner, he struggles in zone, could be lack of communication, but he does alot better in man.

Mitchell can go, he does nothing good.

Watt needs to rush the QB more, and he's only a rookie. They need some speed at ILB.

Stop with the damn 2DL sets, it doesn't work. Need a guy that can push the pocket and be hard to move in the running game

This is the most talentless defense we have had in years; combined with poor coaching, it is a lethal combination. Watt may develop as a good linebacker and we have two, maybe three, serviceable DL. The defensive backfield is a mess and only Sutton and Hilton and maybe Burns are worth their paycheck. If we can't get rid of Tomlin, let's at least get rid of the entire defensive coaching staff.
 
Let's face it, the Defence gave up 45 points. None of that is on our of offence or Haley no matter how much we disliked him. I feel kind of wrong when they did score 42 points. The Steelers are Defence.

While your statement is factual we played the Vikings before their offense got rolling. The titans certainly did not make the playoffs based on offense. Mariota was like a yo-yo this year and in general was pretty poor in a lot of games. The chiefs totally fell apart look at their scores after we played them. Their offense was terrible. You can make an argument that we caused their downward spiral, but can't be proven. You also can't go just by points given up. Look at the Lions game. It was a statistical fluke that we only gave up 15 points. Not sure how you can look at the defense the last 2 years and think it is good
 
All you need to say about this defense was the first drive of Jags, the faces told it all. Physical play is gone from this defense, no leaders on defense and then there is Burns who thinks he is great. Look at the season how many times third and long and no stop, how many games we had to come back to win, no defense even the Pats game being up we could not stop their drive. Defense gets way more credit than they actually deserve, you can give all the stats you want, we tackle poorly, we give way more yards after catch than should,

DL: Heyward good, Tuitt decent.

FS and SS: Jack **** since Troy was done.

The drafting for defense has been horrible. Too many busts on guys who should be rocking and rolling now. That zone will NOT work well without great players and a insane pass rush. They are so far from dominant at so many positions. Maybe it's a great time to transition into a 4-3,It's either that or go all out to get the best NT they can get and do a little of both. I think they've become completely predictable. The middle of field is a playground for other teams and the edge has become that as well. They get gashed on cutbacks all the time because nobody is home or they can't tackle worth a ****.
 
How is it that members of a chat board can see issues with this defense and the organization can't?

As others have said, they keep doing the same thing hoping for different results. They have talent, but too many seem to regress, ie. Bud. Everyone was excited about his potential when drafted and now his name is seldom if ever called.

I'm going with lack of game planning. Why does Butler still have a job?
 
Football IQ does not seem to be a priority for this team. I suspect that is because we don't understand what value that brings and would not be able to take advantage of it anyway.

He should be on with his lifes work. All of them. They got smoked by Blake ******* Bortles who looked like he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with a rocket launcher last week. The most elementary passes he missed over and over.... 10 whole points they managed at home. He had all day to throw and of course the middle of the field being candyland was wide open....Joe Montana awakens.

If the top 2 safeties and ILBs are gone in round one to the point of reaching for the 3rd best doesn't make sense in round one, Via could be the pick.

I think the way the game is trending with the nickel defenses, and sudden influx of running back talent, pure DT run stoppers who can also stay on the field as a pass rusher will become more in demand.

The defense was good with Shazier. No doubt, but how many good offenses did we really face? And without Shazier, we are in some trouble. ILB, S, NT need to be addressed pronto.
 
Shazier is/was paralyzed. He just needs to be able to walk again before anyone even thinks about him playing football.

Although, I do wonder what happens with his cap number next year as I would assume, at this point, there is no way he is able to play. I doubt they will cut him unless they know he will never play again. Guess we will find that out over the next 6 months or so.

To me Bud really stood out in the Jags game as terrible. People say he is an athletic freak, but he was no where near running down bortles. I don't know if he is lazy, slow, or no football IQ, but i noticed several plays to his side where you may add well just put a rock there.
I think we can forget about shazier coming back. We should shift to a 4-3 find a FA safety or MLB and draft whichever one we don't pick up. Should go along way to fix some problems. Although the coaching has to change
 
The defense can't stop the run. They lack the NT in the middle to clog gaps. The LB situation is bad when Dupree can't contain and we are playing with second and third stringers in the middle of the field. There's a clear path for us to upgrade the defense via the draft and free agency.

We face the teams that are on the schedule period. I get so sick of this how many good teams or great qb's did we face bullshit. We had a top 5 defense for a 13-3 team. The "D" carried us the first 8-10 games we played this year. I don't see how you guys seem to forget that. First 10 games of the season our opponents didn't score over 20 points not once in regulation. After Ryan went down it went to **** I agree. But he is the most important piece of the puzzle. His talent hid a lot of our problems. We need to use our next years draft to bring in more talent.
 
There is certainly talent on this Defensive roster, however there are glaring weaknesses too.....

1.) Mike Mitchell
2.) Bud Durpree
3.) Loss of Ryan Shazier is catastrophic to this Defense...make no mistake about that
4.) We need a dedicated true Nose Tackle....ala Casey Hampton or Joel Steed. Hargrave is good but not an every down NT!

I really don't know how you replace a guy like Shazier with 4.38 speed. Freakish players like him come along every five years or so....and if your team gets one consider yourself lucky!

Didn't when it mattered

And cant rush the passer! Bortles had all ****** day to throw, thats why he *** raped them. None of the stiffs on the DL even mattered when the LBs cant even sniff a sack.

Hard for LB's to get any pressure when we put our 2 OLB as DE and expect them to go one on one vs. OL. The other 2 LB have to drop into coverage...no wonder we can't get a sack. The scheme is warped beyond belief.
