It was made official as of Monday, that former Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills quarterback Mitch Trubisky was named the new quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers. To say the least, Steeler Nation had a mixed bag of emotions when it came to how they felt about the new signee. Trubisky, coming off a year where he sat behind young superstar Josh Allen, was now looking to find a new destination that would offer him a starting position again at quarterback for the 2022 season. Before heading to Buffalo, Trubisky started 50 games over the course of four seasons with the Bears. He had his best season in 2018 when he led the Bears to a 12-4 record and their first playoff appearance in eight seasons. After Trubisky’s Pro Bowl season in 2018, things started to head south and he eventually lost his starting spot to Nick Foles. Trubisky now with a fresh start in Pittsburgh, will look to get back to his winning ways with the black and gold next season, but how will he become and upgrade over what we saw from Ben Roethlisberger in 2021?

Over the last few seasons, Steelers fans saw the aging Roethlisberger become less and less mobile. Along with his lack of mobility, his arm was naturally starting to diminish as well. Trubisky on the other hand, has superior mobility in the pocket and exceptional arm strength, so that alone will be an upgrade from what we all saw last year with Roethlisberger.

Statistically speaking, Trubisky will need to put up numbers that mirror his Pro Bowl season in 2018 with which ended with 24 passing touchdowns, 7 interceptions, and over 3,200 yards passing. Those stats are comparable to what Roethlisberger put up in 2021. Roethlisberger ended last season with 22 passing touchdowns, 10 interceptions, and over 3,700 yards passing. But, where Trubisky can be a threat over Roethlisberger is with his feet. In 2018, Trubisky ran for 421 yards and rushed for 3 touchdowns, which adds a significant threat to opposing defenses. The mobility of Trubisky will also be able to open up the play-action passing game, which had struggled mightily the last few seasons with Roethlisberger.

With the number of weapons the Steelers’ offense has already, along with the added pieces to the offensive line so far in free agency, it is not crazy to think that Trubisky will be able to put up numbers comparable to his Pro Bowl season and be a significant upgrade to what we saw last year from the quarterback position. Steelers fans need to remember that Trubisky is a bridge quarterback and he is not intended to be the future of the franchise for many years to come. But, he does offer lots of mobility and a different skillset that this offense desperately needs.

Hopefully the OL play is better for both the pass and run.

Mobility. Willingness to throw the ball over the middle of the field. Hopefully deep ball accuracy. Looking like a competent offense between the first and third quarters. Maybe score an opening drive touchdown?

I’m not so sure…

Trubisky’s 2020 QB rating (last year as a starter): 93.5

Roethlisberger’s QB rating 2021: 86.8
Well we waited to long to replace Ben with such a great QB... In 2020 Ben was 94.1 with 33 TD and 10 INT. In 2021 no one wanted Trubisky to run their offense. We got a what might be an ok stop gap, I'm good with that.

Trubisky's contribution will be directly related to the contribution of the OL improvement. I see this year's version of OL being way better than last years so he should have good numbers.

Always thrilled with better play but remember we will still have our O'h CANADA and we best hope for iprovement from him as well.

Salute the nation

I think so. But dammit, it's not a rip on Ben. I love Ben. But I just think he was so limited the last couple of years.

We will see though. The onus is on the coaches now to have things look better. If it doesn't we will know once and for all it is them.

It REALLY depends on what Mike Tomlin allows Matt Canada to do scheme wise. The Oline is already better than last seasons, albeit on paper at the moment, and Mitch has the weapons to succeed with exception of a true burner at WR, which I'm hoping is addressed in this year's draft with someone like Tyquan Thornton. More play action and zone read concepts would be a nightmare for opposing defenses.

Mobility, as others have said, will be his biggest asset coming in. An improved OL will help everything so hopefully that truly does materialize. Najee will be able to run more effectively and rip some big runs instead of stiff-arming his way for every yard he earned last year. An improved OL will also allow Muuth to get out into space more often. And, hopefully, Canaduh doesn't call plays the same way he did last year and plays to win from the opening snap. That will include game-planning for each and every game and being ready to adapt throughout the game. It also includes the normal 2-minute offense but should also include a significant no-huddle offense. The O this year will really come down to the OL being significantly better and Canaduh being significantly better at his job.

With the revamped offensive line, Trubisky and Harris could thrive here. Harris could take pressure off of Mitchburgh and vice versa. Having a legitimate run threat will help take pressure off the passing game, especially if Canada can emulate the pre snap motion that San Fran and KC utilizes with success.

This is where 2022 Trubisky can be better than the 2021 Ben

He won't is bullshit. Ben was near best in 2nd half and offense was near worst in the first. Get the ball out quick to backs and what is given. Run a little and it will be fine.

Ben was no different than Kobe… It was just a farewell tour but he was a shell of himself. At times it was so painful to watch Ben last year as it was watching Kobe in his final two years… But Ben also played two years too long…

Belichick would have run been out of town…

I remember really not liking it when did the Lakers did that with Kobe, but in retrospect I’m really glad they did. We should be too…

I didn't want Ben back but his wins over the Browns and Ravens were as good as its been in a long time so all things equal I'm glad he did.

Like the others say… in a vacuum his advantage is only with his legs… but the upgrade in the oline should be significant
