My English teacher from Highschool does a sports talk show every Monday locally. He has press passes to the locker room, etc, but on his show today he said the Steelers are more than likely going to put Dupree at ROLB and Watt at LOLB next season. This is the first I've heard this

No haven't heard anything remotely similar to this. Ask him where he heard the rumor from....

Regardless I wonder why they would do it...

I read about this. Only problem is if they switch sides Dupree side is still weak on contribution..

Typically the left tackle is better than the right tackle... Dupree could not beat a right tackle so why do they think he would do better verses the left?

Not to beat a dead horse, but i wonder what a Watt/Harrison duo would have been like last year... for more than a few snaps...

Jarvis Dupree will be equally ineffective on either side, so it's a wash.

Did you turn in your Journal, Tom?

Dupree should be put in the center of the field to replace Shazier. He's not anything more than adequate at the OLB spot. He has athleticism and covers TEs. I'd think this would also allow him to see the play develop and track the RB. Which would then put us at looking for an OLB in the draft ... which we should be anyway.

This could only be an experiment. LOLB plays on the strong side opposite the TE and is more involved in stopping the run. That may be the reason for the move. Dupree has size to play strong side but they may want to look at him on the weak side where he can take more advantage of his athleticism.

You can't go looping around the RT. You have to engage him to set the edge in the run.

Dupree may be able to be more effective rushing vs the LT. The LT may be more athletic but is also usually more of a finesse player. That's why Harrison gave LTs such fits, because they are used to guys trying to loop around them and not guys bull rushing them.

As a side note can anyone explain ROLB and LOLB in this defense to me. At the levels Ive coached at (up to high school) we employ strong and weak lbs. A strong has to cover more ground. Typically Id put an agressive, maybe less disciplined kid at weak. Then I put my athlete with range at strong cause he has to hold edge versus sweep and has to be smart enough to stay home on the boot. Is this an American football deal with right/ left. Same with corners. I put my cover corner on the wide side. The lesser kid plays boundary.

I have no clue anymore, it use to be, going back to Cowhers tenure, the LOLB would rush the passer the majority of plays and the ROLB was more of the athletic do all type.

When I watched Harrison Id often ask myself Why doesnt he just play the short side. He always took an aggressive angle often an inside move. Wouldnt you want that on the short side? I realize there is a blind side (normally right) but you are giving up a lot for that. Plus if he switches sides you cant zero your best tackle on him.

All of our big sackers were ROLB. Lloyd, Porter, Harrison. Though Greene and Gildon played left, so who knows...

I think you nailed it.

It helps to have both rolb and lolb capable applying pressure on blitzing.
But I'd assume one would be more athletic/coverage(zone, man) whilst the other is more on run/blitz support.

Cowhers guys always played coverage generally well.
When Harrison and Woodley played, they both blitzed well. Harrison was the more athletic role however.
From my observation

Say, that sounds like a swell idea. I wonder if it would work?

Sometimes you suprise me.

I don't think Dupree has the instincts or football IQ to play in the middle.

He said because Watt is stronger at the point of attack.

This is true. Also slightly more passes go to the right side of the QB, so Watt can be more of a coverage factor.

Dupree better get his act together.

problem is they are running out of areas that he is capable of playing

Big year coming up for him, a make or break it type......................

Agreed, he'd have to drop some weight to move inside I think, he's listed at 269, but his read and recognition is slow.
