LaMarr Woodley calls his last two defensive coordinators 'dumb'

In August 2011, the Steelers gave LaMarr Woodley a six-year, $61.5 million contract extension. The deal made sense; Woodley had 35 sacks the previous three seasons, and he added nine more in the months following his new deal. But he had just nine total sacks in 2012 and 2013, and by March 2014, he was out of a job.

Woodley spent an injury-plagued year in Oakland (six games, zero sacks) before signing with the Cardinals last season (10 games, one sack). Now 31 and a free agent, it's fair to wonder if his best days are behind him.

Not helping his chances: Woodley ripping his former defensive coordinators. And while he doesn't name names, he might as well have; Woodley's clearly talking about the Cardinals' James Bettcher and former Raiders coordinator Jason Tarver.

"In Oakland, we had a dumb defensive coordinator and in Arizona, we had a dumb defensive coordinator," Woodley said on his podcast, via AZCentral.com. "It was just two dumb guys. They thought we were like Madden players. They'd draw something up and on paper it looked good, but the players still have to go out there and run it. Those guys didn't really listen to their players. They wanted to do it their way and their way only."

Woodley, who played outside linebacker in Pittsburgh from 2007-13, wasn't happy about being moved to defensive end in Oakland. And he blamed Bettcher for the Cardinals' 49-15 blowout loss to the Panthers in last season's NFC Championship Game.

"In Arizona, we had one of the best defenses," he said. "You look at the results that happened in the Carolina game. It wasn't because we had bad players. No, our defensive coordinator he didn't have the common sense to talk to his players to make the adjustments. Because he just wanted to do things his way, those are the results we got, bottom line."

Woodley is free to call out whomever he pleases, but it's worth pointing out that entering his final year in Pittsburgh, an unnamed teammate called him out for not taking his job seriously.

"He was awful," an anonymous Steelers player told Pittsburgh Post-Gazette at the time. "He tells us he works out, but we didn't see it. He wasn't in shape. That has to be a reason why he was always hurt."

In the three seasons since those comments were made, Woodley has played in 27 (of 48) games and managed six sacks. So yeah.

I had a good laugh when I saw this article yesterday.

Players leave the Steelers and don't know how good they have it until they play for a lesser organization.

The Raiders are starting to turn things around now, but they were horrible for a long time. Arizona is schizophrenic in their coaching, and it shows in their up and down play on the field. They don't know who they are, and their QB is both mistake AND injury prone. Not to mention aging rapidly.

I liked Woodley. But he's the kind of player who needs to be the "other guy". The bookend to a great pass rusher. Without a superior talent to play off of, he's Robin with no Batman.

Woodley simply got a big contract and then got fat and lazy... nothing you can do about that... some players play for money. Its a shame too... he could have been a hall of famer had he simply stayed the course. His numbers when they gave him that contract were absurd and he had every decent rush move in the book. He played the run well and wasn't a liability in coverage either.

Talk about burning bridges

Woodley was one of my faves before the contract. 2011 was a helluva stretch of games he had before he went downhill. Sucks what he could've been

wait a minute.. is Woodley basically saying he wasn't used properly.....would look good in the black and gold........ league minimum......

He knows the team/system and can't be worse than Jarvis.

And think about it, he's only 31.

He can be if he cant stay on the field. I think he is done anyways. Not sure if injuries destroyed him, or he just didnt have the motivation and work ethic. Regardless he doesnt seem too bright and I see noway he would end up back here.

No, he actually is worse than Jarvis, pass

I am afraid so. a team would be getting a name at this point. I think he is in denial. Not sure if it was work ethic or just robbed of mobility due to injuries.

But at this point he is a shell of a shell of

a shell

of what he once was.

He's Robin all right,........Like when he was ROBIN the STEELERS of his paycheck.........

PASS........... On him he can't defend anything any more.......... BIG pass

Salute the nation

Sad that a guy who was trying to average 2 sacks a game in his playoff history just eats himself out of the league.

I try to be a bit forgiving of Woodley as whenever I get too grumpy I just pop in my Superbowl DVD and watch him sack Warner on the final play, sealing the victory. It makes it easier for me to let go.

Dude got paid and instead of letting the fat go to the bank, the fat went to him and he was never the same. Damn shame but I have a feeling Bud Dupree is going to have a really good second season on the left side of our defense. Now if we can just get the other side taken care of...

I'm still angry at Woodley. He had legitimate Hall of Fame talent and pissed it away by getting lazy and fat, but mostly fat.

11 sacks a season average for 4 years........then ****.
