Three year deal. Got the notification from DK. No link or story yet.

No way we go after Weddle now. Most likely we draft a young safety to go behind Golden

I'm good with this. He compliments the secondary well.

Me too and like '81 said, "They signed a special teams guy and back up safety." that is a hard worker and good team player. I still don't hear any speculation about the Golson conversion, if that transpires then Weddle may be a moot point and a draft pick might suffice.

I assume total value of the deal is 5-6m?

Teams player. Good guy, good backup. Decent signing.

Solid move if the price was right, he is one of the few free agents I had interest in resigning.

We are not going to pay Weddle 6 mil/yr and have his backup make 1.5 mil/yr. Just don't see that happening. I'd like to see us sign a corner personally.

Golden made 1.3 mil last season to be the back up. He got a slight increase

Will Allen. I think he leaves now unless he takes near NFL minimum.

We won't re-sgn Will Allen. I would still look at Weddle, for the right price. If he wants more than 5 mil on a 3 yr deal I say no way. Once we restructure Timmons and extend Decastro we will have some $$$ to play with.

They already said they aren't going to bring Allen back last week.

Heard the same. They said he wants to test the market and they are willing to let him.

Do you realize $1.5 million is significantly below the average NFL salary? It IS backup money.

5M/3years, very nice signing, it was one of the FA I wanted them to re-sign too, hope this means they are saving some money to invest in a starting CB as I wanted to. Now we can go after a high S pick having Mitchell and Golden starting while the rookie gets playing time.
Golden already proved he can start and hold his own, why not trust him to compete with a rookie instead of spending money in an old S with so many other needs?

If you mean getting burnt like toast then ok. If you mean being part of the secondary ranked 30th out of 32 is holding his own then ok. I like him a teams guy, nothing more.

Golden improved as the year went on and he got more playing time. I would expect him to be fighting for a starting spot for sure next season.

lol....but weddle!
jesus h. people. we sign C level players. this siging doesn't change a single thing about the steelers approach to free agency. sign their own...let others overpay for the big names, then when nobody is looking, they'll sign someone who flew under the radar.

My whole point is that a combined salary of Weddle and Golden seems like a lot for the safety spot. I just don't see the FO paying all that money to one spot.

I think this allows the Steelers to make smart decisions about the safety position. They don't need to sign Weddle or any other free agent unless the price is right and they don't need to draft a safety in the first round. Golden at the very minimum is a solid safety that knows the defense. Personally I think we should go after Tyvon Branch since he shouldn't come too expensive and at 29 has a few good years left. Again, you don't go after him day one of free agency but you maybe call his agent and see what he is looking for and express interest and then wait to see if the price comes down to 2.5 - 3 million a season where we could afford him.

I think this Weddle thing is hilarious.

Tomlin makes complimentary remarks regarding an opponent, which is something he does on a weekly basis, and SteelerNation goes into a frenzy.

If the deal was 5 million over 3 years it was a very solid move, where did ya get the numbers Litos?
