GM Kevin Colbert: 'Lot of work to be done' with Ben Roethlisberger's contract

A few years back, when Ben was playing the retirement game in the press, with the purpose of getting rid of an OC he didn't like, were you guys as critical of him as you are Colbert and Rooney now?
Isn't Colbert basically on a year to year contract now because he's brought up retirement as well? That's nothing new for guys getting up there and that retirement talk had alot to do with wanting the ******* me first attitudes on the team cleaned up, not just the OC, who did a good job of losing his job on his own on the south side.

tired of the lip service get a restructure done, Kevin you know it saves the team more if he comes back for 1 year stop trying to force himn to retire unless you have a way to get watson or russ

I know. I am not taking issue with what you say here. I take issue with this constant need to defend a grown man, a 17 year vet who is coming to the end. It is almost as if some are just looking to be offended for Ben. Nothing Colbert said was wrong or offensive in any way. If Ben is that sensitive to be offended by it, he needs to just retire. He has been rewarded handsomely over the years.

There needs to be reality right now and Colbert offered that. No more, no less.

All that said, the Super Bowl has me thinking some. At the end of the day the guy who won it at QB is the guy who is the traditional QB. All these bells and whistles frm other teams, and it is the traditional guy.

What I think about is that the Steelers tend to be late to the party in some ways. I can just see them transitioning to this more modern offense that everyone is doing. The rest of the league catches up on defense, and the teams that have a little more foresight, what do they do? Well, they go back to the more traditional offense, while our beloved Steelers are bumbling around with whatever they'll be doing.

People defend Ben simply because between the media, some fans, and the NFL he has been thrown plenty of shade. Somewhat ridiculous just how much. And this guy was nothing but a winner for us. I don't personally need to defend him for everything. But if I read some bullshit I won't mind throwing a word in here and there.

I didn't have any issue with what Colbert said, but look at guys like Watson and Wilson. Watson throwing a fit because he isn't included in the hiring and **** like that, and Wilson whining about behing hit to much and not having as much say as he'd like. Rodgers had some ****** stuff to say when GB drafted a QB in round 1 last year. Did you hear Sharpe, Scott, or any other ex NFL player bashing the **** out of them 24/7? Ben never said any of that stuff, and they beat him down for that exact ****.

Exactly their personal whipping boy. We get it you don't like BigBen (media) get over it.

Sharpe and Scott are idiots. But you are right, Rodgers and the other guys get very little criticism. After Green Bay lost the NFCC, I was listening to someone on sports radio on the way to work, and all they were talking about was Green Bay taking the 1st round QB, what if it was a DB that could help now with what transpired and blah, blah. Completely giving Rodgers a pass. I was just laughing, because wasn't the guy covering Scotty Miller a high pick? Desmond King?

I'm all for defending Ben against that crap. But Colbert didn't say anything wrong, and the Steelers aren't doing anything wrong. They didn't do anything wrong with Troy, either. I loved Troy, but the guy was done, he wasn't making plays anymore. Ben can still make plays at least.

I have zero issue with what Colbert said as well. Ben is more of a cap issue, than not being able to throw.

The only thing the $15M Payment means in March, is they Steelers will have their decision on Ben in the next 3 weeks. He will retire, restructure, or be released.

Not a chance. If the Steelers felt good with Ben's ability to still play at a high level a deal would already be done. They watched the film down the stretch and saw what we all saw.

I can't rule out this possibility. But if that be the thought why drag it out any longer?

Because no one in the front office wants to tell Ben they don't think he can play anymore.

Can't delay the inevitable there is work to do or not ? Which should take center stage.

Exactly. Either bring him back or don't. If they plan on bringing him back, you have to treat the cap like it'll be at the minimum and just get the deal done.

Keep reading it won't rise much more the projected figure which is 182/183 mil. Hopefully it is figured out sooner than later. I am ok with either or regardless of what I prefer. But the greater want is for things to be accomplished. I am an inpatient ******.

Then they'd have pulled an Arians on him and tell him, he can't fit under the cap or whatever, they've never had an issue ending things before.
No one is saying he's playing at a high level, his pay is that of a middle of the road starter. I saw to many good throws to say he can't make throws any more, can't have him throwing 50 times per game with no Oline or running game, the majority of QB's would struggle in that situation.

It is this weird collection of things. I do wonder if Ben has an offseason in which he can strengthen the arm instead of just rehabbing, get back to some fundamentals, get in great shape, if he could still do some great things. I lean toward the idea that he can.

The negative feeling I have toward Ben is that is he willing to change the way he plays some? Is he willing to get under center more, commit to the run game, maybe be satisfied to throw no more than about 30 a game (not because he can't, but I think it is more conducive to winning)?
