In a meeting on Wednesday with members of the Pittsburgh-area media, Colbert also said the Steelers might have to start evaluating current and future players differently with the type of college-style offense new coordinator Matt Canada will install — including quarterback.

LOL, buckle up, going to be a bumpy ride, especially if Tomlin thinks Haskins is the guy to run his "college-style" offense. College style offense with a high school level coach, what could ever go wrong.

They're going to do Ben dirty just like they did with Troy. Ben deserves more respect than what he is getting from the owner and GM IMO.

What is this the second time Colbert has rambled on about it? We get it. **** or get off the pot. He is in your plans or he isn't. You can't be accomplishing **** if you aren't in negotiations. So either start or move on. This is starting to get irritating.

I love Ben, but he looked very old and sluggish 2nd half of the year. He’s done. I say give him one last ride if he wants it at the right price, or we move on.

I mean, would you rather they just cut him outright?

Its obvious the Steelers are less than thrilled to have Ben come back, while also interested in seeing what they have in Mason.

They are essentially putting the ball in Ben's court: Either take a deep pay cut, or move on.

There is absolutely nothing dirty about it. Its a business, and you simply can't pay players what they are not worth.

There is a way to go about your business and I don't like how they're doing it. AR2 and KC have done nothing but run their mouths to the media about Ben's contract.
We all know the situation. They keep talking about they have a lot to work to do on the contract.. Ok, then go ******* handle it. Stop running your gums about it to anyone who wants to listen.

It is like they are trying to get him to retire. If that is your intention just tell Ben. If it isn't sit down at the fricken table.

Exactly, pretty simple.
If you want the man to retire then have a man to man conversation not keep talking about it to the media for them to speculate and write articles.

It's time for BEN to put up or move on. He said his wages didn't matter, well here is that chance to prove it. As for Colbert & Art deuce, quit airing in-house stuff out in public. Approach Ben and put it out there as to what can be done, I bet BEN signs first offer given.

Canada's "COLLEGE STYLE" offense will go over ok until the film is out then it will be just like any other offense with their respective weaknesses. If Tomlin calls the "D" like he has been and the Offense is college.............??? won't matter who is behind center.

It's not hard to do. All of this blah blah contract ****. This is the bottom line. If the Steelers genuinely feel they have no shot at the Super Bowl next year with Ben and whatever they can add. Then release him or give him the retire option.

If they do feel like they have a legit shot, rework his deal to lower that cap hit when he retires after next season.

Me personally, i don't think we will win dick ever again with this head coach. Fat ******* chance.

I hope I'm wrong. Doubt it.

Most likely hold up - not knowing what the Cap number will be. New TV deal is not signed but may well give more room to teams. Teams aren't going to finalize **** until they know the size of the sandbox. You know who else isn't going to finalize **** till the sandbox size is determined? Agents. I would not expect any news for a few more weeks.

I am starting to think that they are talking to the press about it to gain leverage for renegotiating his contract.

I figured that came into play but in the grand scheme they should have an idea what they want to do. The right now Ben is our QB statement was just odd to me. Just sends unnecessary mixed singles.

That could be thought about that too. But not fond of the approach if that be the case.

At this point, I think i'd probably just say **** you and retire. I won't be surprised if Ben is more like Bradshaw than Franco in their life after Steelers though.
To be honest, with Tomlin at HC I don't think this team will be getting back to a SB until he's gone.
He has a lifetime contract with no accountability so who knows when that will be.

Culture, or "The Standard" starts at the top is what I've been hearing. Seems some folks forget (not you D.I.C.) that there is another couple of layers to that "top" past Tomlin.

They are complaining about a contract they wrote up and agreed to and expect what from him? I do agree it appears they are trying to force him to retire instead of cutting him. Regardless we should know something within the next 4 weeks and shouldn’t drag on much longer.

I have a feeling it’s what they want him to do.

Not even sure if it’s feasible but do you think they could maybe trade him to let’s say the Colts? They took a shot on Rivers and could see them do the same with Ben for the next maybe year or two? At this point the writing is on the wall and you can tell they want to move on and at the same time he seems to still want to play.

I think too much is being read into it. Media asks questions. Team answers. This isn't the teams first dance with such things. Let it play out.

No... not their style... they will cut him like a long list of stars and let them decide whether to go somewhere or not...

I still think he is back for a swann song ... he is too favreish to walk away while he has anything left... and i think he has more than people think

Sooo, more "clickbait" to get the fans riled up. When you read more of what Colbert said, it doesn't appear as bad or as if they are jerking Ben around.

"When we met previously, we all agreed that we will get together at some point once we get further down the road when we have a better understanding of what free agency is, what the cap might be and, from a personnel standpoint, we will have a better idea what type of players will be available to us in free agency and how we might want to address either adding our own or adding someone from those classes," Colbert said. "We'll have a much better feel and are getting a much better feel of the draft class. All of that comes together collectively and we can have a better idea of what our team will be in 2021, and how can he be a part of it and make that group as good as it can be?

"It's an ongoing process that just doesn't involve him, but involves the players around him. I'm sure he's going to want to see what kind of team we can keep together under our current situation. And hopefully we can make that correct adjustments to keep that group together as much as possible."

I think NOT knowing the cap is the biggest deterrent. ONCE cap is decided then a lot of progress will happen fast. I'd bet they already have ground work or numbers figured close to what they offer and IT WILL TEST BEN ON HIS WORD of what his pay will be. This goes for other players as well, including restructures.

And you sir would be correct according to Colbert. From the Dale Lolley article linked in my previous post, Colbert says:

It is a cap (thing) first and foremost because we will have to be in compliance with the salary cap once the new league year starts. What kind of team can we put together or keep together under those cap restrictions?" Colbert said. "We know we're up against it. We would have been up against it in a normal year, and we were willing to do the things we did via free agency, extensions and negotiations, etc.

"That's not unique to us. There's probably two-thirds of the league that faces similar issues. How that comes together in the next few weeks, we'll continue to look at it. It is first and foremost financial because we have to be in compliance. And then we'll make guess-timates to put the best team together for our sake and for Ben's sake. What kind of team can he anticipate being around him if we decide we can move forward together?
