The Short Story: The battle of Pennsylvania's undefeated NFL teams produced a blowout as the Philadelphia Eagles (3-0) thumped the Pittsburgh Steelers (2-1), 34-3, on Sunday (Sept. 25) at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
The 31-point loss marked Pittsburgh's largest margin of defeat since a 41-10 setback to the Cincinnati Bengals in 1989.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Eagles overwhelmed the Steelers in all facets of the game. Philadelphia outgained Pittsburgh, 426-251, and picked up 25 first downs while limiting the Steelers to just 15. The Steelers made just two trips into the red zone and came away empty handed both times. The Eagles possessed the football nearly 10 minutes longer than the Steelers did. Philadelphia absolutely dominated Pittsburgh at the line of scrimmage. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was sacked four times and was under constant duress while Philadelphia kept rookie quarterback Carson Wentz upright the entire game. Wentz delivered an impressive 23-of-31 showing that produced 301 passing yards and two touchdowns.
• Pittsburgh's defense could not contain, let alone stop, running back Darren Sproles, who hauled in six passes for 128 yards and a touchdown.
• Philadelphia gashed Pittsburgh's defense on the ground as well as through the air, picking up 125 rushing yards. Eagles running back Wendell Smallwood accounted for 79 yards and a touchdown.
• The tone for Pittsburgh's miserable evening in the City of Brotherly Love was set on the game's opening drive. Roethlisberger found wide receiver Eli Rogers for a gain of 32 yards on 3rd and 6 to give the Steelers a new set of downs at the Philadelphia 39. After Roethlisberger found wide receiver Antonio Brown for a gain of 13, he kept the chains moving again with a seven-yard scramble to give Pittsburgh a first down at the Philadelphia 16. Facing a 3rd and 13, Roethlisberger threw a pass to wide receiver Markus Wheaton in the end zone, but Wheaton could not make the catch and Pittsburgh was forced to settle for a field goal attempt. Unfortunately for Pittsburgh, the opening drive produced no points as kicker Chris Boswell's 36-yard try was blocked by Eagles defensive tackle Bennie Logan. The Eagles turned the blocked field goal into a seven-play, 63-yard drive that produced a successful 29-yard field goal by kicker Caleb Sturgis and gave Philadelphia a 3-0 lead.
• After forcing Pittsburgh to punt on its second drive, Wentz and the Eagles marched 82 yards in 12 plays and just over six minutes, with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft finding wide receiver Jordan Matthews for a 12-yard touchdown to cap the drive with less than four minutes gone by in the second quarter.
• Roethlisberger hit wide receiver Sammie Coates for a gain of 36 on 3rd and 4, then hooked up with Brown for 20 more yards on the next play to put Pittsburgh in business with the ball on the Philadelphia 16. Roethlisberger took a sack on third down, though, and Boswell came on to make a 40-yard field goal to cut Pittsburgh's deficit to seven points.
• The Eagles quickly made it a 10-point game again on the ensuing possession as Sturgis drilled a 38-yard field goal to end a drive that chewed five minutes off the clock and sent Philadelphia into the locker room holding a 13-3 advantage.
• Halftime offered no respite for the Steelers. It took Philadelphia just three plays to make it a 20-3 game. On 3rd and 8 from his own 37, Wentz was forced to roll to his right and calmly found Sproles, who turned the catch-and-run into a 73-yard touchdown.
• The Steelers proceeded to turn the ball over on downs on the ensuing possession, and Philadelphia made them pay with a seven-play, 67-yard drive that ended in a one-yard touchdown run by Smallwood.
• On Pittsburgh's next drive, Roethlisberger was sacked by Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox and fumbled the ball, which was recovered by defensive end Brandon Graham. Three plays later, running back Kenjon Barner extended Philadelphia's lead to 31 points with just under two minutes to play in the third quarter with an eight-yard touchdown run.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
• The Steelers have now lost their last nine games played in Philadelphia.
• The loss ended Pittsburgh's streak of games of not trailing by as many as 30 points at 305.
• The injuries mounted quickly against the Eagles. The list included linebacker Ryan Shazier (knee), guard Ramon Foster (chest/elbow), safety Robert Golden (hamstring), Rogers (foot), safety Mike Mitchell (knee) and linebacker Lawerence Timmons (lower leg).
• After missing the first two games of the 2016 season with an injury, Wheaton was targeted five times and came away with just one catch for two yards.
