Well the final regular season game sure as hell didn't disappoint.....I really felt the Steelers had no chance going into this one but they certainly made it a game. It was Judgement Day for Mason Rudolph today as he's being targeted as the successor to Big Ben when that day comes. In his third year with the Steelers Mason Rudolph looked better than I expected after watching him last season and he made some really good throws.....had one god awful INT that was just him trying to make something out of nothing. That play was made even worse when the refs missed a Roughing the QB Penalty on that play and the Referee was looking at the play the whole time. I'll still reserve judgement on Mason Rudolph today but he's definitely improved from year two to year three and he does throw a nice long ball. All in all it was a nice performance by Rudolph and the Steelers. I don't know why the Steelers didn't throw the ball downfield more in the first half like they did in the 2nd half of this game. Not sure what to think about Josh Dobbs but I almost wonder can he catch the football ala Slash? He could be a good option in the RPO going forward. I certainly wouldn't bench Mason in place of Dobbs but if the Steelers could keep Dobbs active for a few plays in game it might be beneficial. Nice game for Chase Claypool going forward I hope that rookie wall has been passed for Claypool. Congratulations to Chase Claypool on a great rookie season and it's nice to see Dionte Johnson improving when it comes to catching the football. The running game is still pathetic.....at this point it is what it is.....it might be our Waterloo going forward because the Steelers can't take the air out of the football but I hope I'm wrong. On the Defensive side of the football it's been nice to see steady progress from Alex Highsmith week in, week out.....He showed a nice spin move several times today to get pressure on Mayfield and he has that Ghost move too. Starting to build a nice little arsenal of moves at ROLB. Chris Wormley did a nice job generating pressure up the middle....good to see our Steelers keep their sack record going forward. On the downside Justin Layne really looks pedestrian in pass coverage.....a bit bothersome because I know the Steelers expectations for Layne were a future starter at CB. He didn't fit that role today. Matthew Wright shows good accuracy but he doesn't have the leg strength.....not sure if he ever will but I can't help but root for the kid. On kickoffs with him out there it looks like we have 10 & half guys on the field he's so friggin small.he looks like he's about 150 lbs....reminds me of Garo Yapremian out there. I hope we get Boswell back and healthy for the playoffs, we will need him. A loss today gives us a rematch vs Cleveland next week in Pittsburgh. I hope Cam Sutton can step up in place of Joe Haden because I doubt Haden will return from CoVid. This was Cleveland's Super Bowl and I think we saw the best the Clowns can throw at us. Provided we have our full compliment of players next week I like the Steelers chances at home vs Cleveland.
Tomlin Post Game:
Chase Claypool - has an ankle but he was able to return
Vince Williams - was able to return
Game Balls:
Mason Rudolph - 22 for 38 315 yds 2 TD's, 1 INT - started the game pretty rough but settled in and had a nice game. Made one bad throw and held the ball a little too long a few times.....he didn't kill us today.
Chase Claypool - 5 rec 101 yds 1 TD - Nice to see he hasn't hit that rookie wall yet....Tomlin might have the done right thing holding back the last 4 weeks.
Alex Highsmith - Showing steady improvement each and every week.....nice sack early today and had good pressure throughout the game
Matthew Wright - Good accuracy, did everything they asked him to do today.
Stephon Tuitt - Did pretty well today....got good pressure and had a sack and was in on several tackles today
Game Goats:
Isiah Buggs & Carlos Davis - Not sure if many people saw it but these 2 rookies were fighting over something on the sideline before Tomlin came between the two of them and broke it up. You guys are teammates....get your **** together!
FU's:
FU Jerome Boger or whatever the **** your name is. How the **** did you miss the Roughing the QB call on Mason Rudolph on his INT he threw? Rudolph was hit with both forearms to the helmet on the play after he threw the ball. On the replay we see the Ref looking right at the play and not throwing the flag. WTF that was terrible no call and it was the difference in the game too.
FU to whoever nominated Myles Garrett for Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.....he could have killed Mason Rudolph last year if he hit him with his own helmet last season....this is not the type of guy you should reward with a nomination like this. Garrett is a PUNK!
