Future HOF, Brandon Boykin, cut from Panthers

kinz we brung him backs?

Very interesting. Nobody seemed too interested when the Steelers didn't try signing him back and now the Panthers just cut him before he even sees a practice field. There has to be some kind of off the field issues are bad egg rep we just aren't aware of as fans. If that's not true I would not be against signing him for the vet min and letting him scrap it out with Golson for the nickel spot.

Geez, that did not take long. This makes our trade for him ( 5th round pick ) look very bad.

Figures, somehow there was going to be negative crap thrown at the Steelers because of this. Whether we didn't play him enough last year or bad a move it was to trade for him, always a way to paint it negatively....

I think there may be some off-field stuff. If not, he would nice to have back, although we have a real logjam now, unless Grant moves to safety.

Hindsight is how Coach would win every game he was in

I remember being pretty excited about giving up a 5th(or 4th) for him. Not a bad trade at all quite honestly considering who we had at corner

Interesting how high he was rated when in Philly. Did his time with the Steelers ruin him or is it something else? CB's have to have confidence. Riding the pine all year in Pittsburgh may have caused him to lose his confidence. Do our secondary coaches even know how to coach someone? Not sure what happened with him. This just seems odd.

yeah, trying to address a deficiency is always a bad idea.

LOL. I don't think anyone here thought that was a bad trade at the time. We all thought he was instant starter. With information available to us, it seemed a good deal. Clearly, the FO thought so, too.

Turns out, when the coaches get a better look through the season, that may not have been true. So, they cut bait.

Then you people said they were stupid for doing so!! Except, maybe, not.

I'm hearing he's going to be suspended for PED. Just a rumor as of now.
Well it has to be something of that nature. He has barely stepped on the field even in shorts so it isn't his performance. And I'm pretty sure if it was a locker room issue they would take some time to resolve before release. Pretty clear cut that he is being suspended and they just don't need the hassle.

This is very interesting to me, so I'll break down my reasoning.

Steelers cut Boykin after showing some promise in our system.

The Panthers pick him up and could really use a quality slot corner.

Boykin was rated as the top slot corner 2 years ago.

Before training camp even starts, Boykin is cut.

You do not cut a quality corner that can help your team in a position of need at a bargain basement price, unless:

1. He's about ready to be arrested for a crime that would warrant bad press or a suspension.
2. He's about ready to be suspended for violating the NFL banned substance policy. (As SF81 touched on).
3. He has a serious injury. (Though the Panthers would have had to give him some injury compensation to drop him, so I find this option very low on the probability scale)

When Boykin was cut. The Panthers had to eat the $80k signing bonus (not a ton of money, but still it is now dead money). If he was suspended, it would have been his first offense, and would carry a 4 game suspension. I don't personally think you cut a player for violating the league's substance abuse policy, when he'd have the ability to still practice and learn the defense all preseason, only to sit out one month. You'd get a player back, and healthy, and ready to play in October, and this is something that a SB caliber team can roll the dice on with little risk.

My thought is something big is about to come out about him. You don't cut a new player that can help your team when he'd only be missing 4 games. You cut a guy to distance your team from some terrible news that's about to break about that player.

It cant be performance related, he didn't even get to show his face on training camp. Theres something else there

That could have been enough reason I think but he also had this burning desire to get out of the slot position and move outside...and he was vocal about it. The two may just have been enough to make him a detriment to the team.

That would be vetted in any discussion when he signed the contract. It wouldn't be "oh you wanted to play outside and you won't play slot." "Sorry we didn't know that!!!"
