Steelers draft round 4-7

RD4- Senquez Golson CB Ole Miss
RD5- Nick O'Leary TE FSU
RD6a- Max Valles OLB Virginia
RD6b- Caushaud Lyons DL Tusculum
RD7- Alani Fua OLB BYU

I like Fisher, and Olomu, in rounds 2 ad 3 but Shaq Thompson in round one! NO F'N Way. The guys barely 6 feet 228 pounds tall. He won't be able to play OLB in a 3-4. You would have to assume safety, and with a 4.64 he can't be matched in coverage with speedy players. I'd rather have NT Brown, or CB Johnson or Peter over Thompson.

We need pass rushers, and this draft didn't pick one until round 6.

He's 6ft 228lbs and runs a 4.64. So do you you think he runs faster at 210lbs? He gained weight and muscle this off season but likely slowed him down. Watching him he can cover, blitz, and play the run. He might be the most instinctive and versatile player in this draft. I remember when Troy came out I heard he's too short, doesn't have a true position, blah blah. What I saw was an instinctive football player. That's what I see with Shaq Thompson.

So, we wait until round 6 to draft an OLB??
I agree, that's not going to cut it. The Steelers have been tight-lipped about it, but my sense is they are hoping a top edge rusher falls in their lap. I like Arthur Moats a whole lot, glad he re-upped with us, great teammate, great community guy, great back-up linebacker to have on the squad. But that's not gonna cut it if coach Butler has designs on revamping this defense into its previously formidable self. I think they want an impact edge rusher as early as 22, as late as the 2nd round.

Ford,

We already have Shazier who can do similar things, except he's much faster and also weights about 230 pounds. I think the defense needs what it does not have. A good pass rushing OLB, coverage people at CB and S, and a more powerful NT. Thompson to me is a 'tweener sub package player. Too slow for safety, too small for LB. I'd like him only if the nickel defense became our primary.

He's a great football player who doesn't fit in our defense. It happens. Casey Hampton would have been a good fit for many teams that run a 4-3. Derrick Brooks was a HOF player, but he only fit as an OLB in a 4-3 defense. That's where Shaq Thompson fits too. It might seem like a shame to pass on a great football player but it's also a shame to take one who can't excel in the scheme you run.

The thing about Shazier is her is a better athlete but less of a natural football player. I think Thompson is a better football player and still a very good athlete. If he can run a 4.64 at 228lbs he should speed up losing 10-15 pounds. Not that 4.64 is too slow for a SS just saying he should be able to speed up the way Bell did last year when he shed a few LBs.

Now, I am sure you have your idea of what the Steelers should draft but I am doing my mock on who I think the Steelers will draft. I do my follow along mock draft during the draft where when the Steelers pick I pick who I would take at that point but right now I am just taking players I feel the Steelers might draft. Along with who I think the other 31 teams will take.

Here are my reasoning at each pick.

RD1.22- Steelers – Shaq Thompson DB Washington

Thompson is an instinctive player who is versatile. He can play S, OLB, and ILB depending on the situation and he can cover, blitz and play the run. He is also very dangerous when he gets the ball in his hands on defense as he also can play running back and it shows on returning INT's or fumbles. He has 5 defensive touchdowns in college. When he gets the ball he can take it to the house. Looking at who is on the board at #22 I really don't see a true playmaker on the board besides Melvin Gordon (not need) and Shaq Thompson.

RD2.24- Pittsburgh – Jake Fisher OL Oregon

We need to get long term deals done with Beachum, DeCastro and have to think about Foster and Adams. I very much doubt we sign them all and for some reason I feel Beachum is odd man out. He has played well at LT but not great but will likely want LT money. I feel the Steelers might want to get a guy who can potentially play LT, LG, RG or RT. Fisher has great athleticism and might end up being a cheaper alternative than handing out another big contract on the offensive line. He also fits very well in the Munchak zone blocking scheme.

RD3.23- Pittsburgh - Ifo Ekpre-Olomu CB Oregon

Ifo is an interesting prospect being that you only have tape to go off of. But the Steelers usually are very high on tape so if his knee looks like it is progressing well I could see the Steelers take a flier on him at the end of the third. Ifo has great hips, uses his body well, can pick off a poorly thrown ball and looks to be a very fluid CB. His only concerns are height and health of his knee. But that likely has him fall a little.

RD4- Senquez Golson CB Ole Miss

I double up on a healthy CB. Golson is a great athlete and has awesome ball skills raking up 16 career picks and 10 last year. Again his size at a tick under 5-9 176lbs and short arms will hurt him but the Steelers have had success with Brice McCain and William Gay so maybe they go with a smaller secondary.

RD5- Nick O'Leary TE FSU

O'Leary is a little slow, short, short arms, small hands but you watch him on film and the dude is always open. I think his physical tools are closed to maxed out but I wouldn't bet against this kid because he has a love of the game and knows how to get open.

RD6a- Max Valles OLB Virginia

I know I waited for a pass rusher but personally if a Gregory or Beasley doesn't fall in round one why take a guy marginally better than Max Valles like Lorenzo Mauldin in the 2nd or 3rd? Valles is a young guy with room to develop. He has the tools and at times you see him flash when he puts it together but just is not consistent. We have Jarvis Jones, James Harrison, and Arthur Moats to hold down the fort but I want to see how Howard Jones progressed this offseason and get a guy like this into camp and see what Keith Butler and Joey Porter can do with him.

RD6b- Caushaud Lyons DL Tusculum
The only thing I have to go on is the vid below. But Lyons is a freaky athlete and dominated his small division. What I like is his motor is always going and he does a nice job of shedding blocks. It's hard to get a reading off of him with such little to go on but at this point it's a free pick so lets get him into camp and see what we have.

RD7- Alani Fua OLB BYU

Fua is not a guy who is going to wow you with stats but looking at what they asked him to do it makes more sense. He has great numbers and seems to do whatever the coaches ask so a very good coachable and team first player. He fits what we want and the type of player we draft.

I would completely have to argue this. Maybe I am the only one who remembers this but Troy played a hybrid LB/S position at USC. He was listed as a SS but played very similar to the way we asked him to in the pros. He blitzed, played at the line like a LB, covered. I mean I look at what Washington did with Thompson and it was very much the same as USC did with Troy.
