Pittsburgh Steelers

Notable Free Agents: LT Kelvin Beachum, OG Ramon Foster, CB Brandon Boykin, NT Steve McLendon, CB William Gay, SS Will Allen, WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, ILB Sean Spence, CB Antwon Blake, FS Robert Golden, DE Cam Thomas, QB Bruce Gradkowski, RB Jordan Todman, QB Michael Vick

Cornerback: Pittsburgh fielded one of the league's weakest 2015 cornerback corps, rotating William Gay, Antwon Blake, and Ross Cockrell before getting Brandon Boykin involved down the stretch. Gay, Blake, and Boykin are all free agents. 2015 second-round pick Senquez Golson (shoulder) missed his entire rookie year and stands 5-foot-9, 176. In order to match up with A.J. Green and Josh Gordon in the AFC North, the Steelers need a legit No. 1 corner.

Offensive Line: The Steelers will get C Maurkice Pouncey back from his broken fibula, but LT Kelvin Beachum and LG Ramon Foster are both free agents, while RG David DeCastro is entering his contract year. After Beachum tore his ACL in October, replacement Ali Villanueva struggled mightily in his absence, allowing the seventh most sacks among offensive tackles despite playing the 56th most snaps at the position. Pittsburgh must address at least two offensive line spots (LT, LG).

Safety: FS Mike Mitchell has settled in as a passable starter, but SS Will Allen's contract is up and 2013 fourth-rounder Shamarko Thomas doesn't look remotely ready to replace him. Nor does Robert Golden, a free agent who beat out Thomas for the Steelers' third safety job in 2015. As DC Keith Butler mixes and matches Cover 2 and Cover 3, Pittsburgh will hunt for a versatile bookend to Mitchell who's capable of covering tight ends and running the alley.

Quarterback: Michael Vick and Bruce Gradkowski are headed to free agency, leaving only Landry Jones behind injury-riddled Ben Roethlisberger. Jones floundered in his 2015 spot opportunities, committing five turnovers as a two-game starter and completing just 58.2% of his throws. The Steelers figure to target free agent veterans to compete for the backup job.

If Beachum fetches top LT $, I say let him walk. You simply can't pay everyone top $, you have to pick and choose. I'd say most of our FAs are in that came boat: sign those who come in at a reasonable price, let those who want overpaid to walk. I don't see why we will pay Boykin good $, being that he was barely allowed to see the field, even when Blake was playing the worst football of any starting CB in the NFL. I'd really like to see Gay back. He doesn't get the credit he deserves. I'd also like to see Cockrell back too. We need to hope and pray Golson ends up being legit, or we could be in real trouble.

This summary says Villa "struggled mightily." Most of us didn't see it that way, but he gave up 7th most sacks of all LTs while playing only the 56th most snaps. That does sound pretty bad.

Bottom line, priorities remain the same: CB, S, OLB, back up QB, OT if we lose Beach. Probably another RB. I don't know if D Will has another good year left in him or not.

Didn't we already resign Cockrell to a one year extension?

my $.02

Beachum is gone. He'll get paid. We'll get perhaps a 4th round comp pick for losing in him 2017. I'm okay with that. Beachum has a poor start the season, giving up sacks and getting flagged too often

Villa had an up and down season, but most 1st time starting left tackles have similar issues. I'd keep him and let Beachum go to save cap space, and make sure we don't lose Gay in free agency unless some dumb team offers Gay 9-10 million a year.

Cockrell was a nice find, but he was also decent on the field. Keeping him could be difficult. My hunch is the Steelers would rather let Golson or Grant pass Cockrell on the depth chart. Grant and Golson are very cheap cap players for years

If Gay is gone, then Cockrell becomes a bigger priority as a free agent to re-sign. It would be very risky to project Grant and Golson as a starter and the #3 man because neither played much as a rookie.

Essentially there is a domino effect if Gay goes elsewhere. Picking CB in round one will be nice, but that player likely won't be ready until next year.

Cockrell has already signed a one-year deal covering next season. Last season was just his second season so he was an exclusive rights free agent (which means he couldn't go anywhere unless we didn't want him). He will be a restricted free agent after next season.

Beachum is gone. But I'm very high on AV. He has only been a tackle for a couple years. He was a defensive lineman for the Eagles as recently as August of 2014. He improved steadily and his play was above the line by the playoffs. We know he has the work ethic to succeed and he obviously has the physical tools. Guys that are first round draft picks and that started 40 games at LT in college still take plenty of time to adjust to playing LT in the NFL. ****, just a couple years ago a couple tackles went 1-2 overall in the draft and neither of those guys has been much of anything...the fact that AV gave up a few sacks as he got his feet wet doesn't bother me at all. He faced some pretty stiff competition...first game at Arrowhead, faced the Bengals D three times and the Broncos twice...

Unless yinz have some crystal ball let's not say a player is gone until he is actually ya know....................gone.

As a few might surprise yinz and return after the market is set.

I don't think Beachum is nearly going to get the money you guys think he's going to get.

He's one of the most atypical LT's in the league. I know for a fact half the offensive line coaches in the league don't even consider him a left tackle and would never play or want him there. There are too many coaches and GM's dead set on certain height/length to play that position.

Beachum is going to have to beat out Villa before he is anointed anything. I'm not so sure that will / can happen. Beachum has his issues and coming off injury, is always a question mark untill proven otherwise. Cockrell is here, HERE. Blake can be gone based on his play, but stranger things have happened.........backup????

Salute the nation

He would have to be signed before he beat him out; there will be no workouts for beach unless he signs a new deal to begin with.

You know the opinion of beachum by every offensive line coach in the NFL to be throwing this around as "fact"?

But it only takes one team to overpay Beachum...

tag beachum

tag beachum

It's not unprecedented. If we tagged Max Starks, we could certainly tag Beachum.

Of course, I think tagging Starks was one of the worst front office move this organization ever made, so what do I know.....

Reports are saying the Steelers to express interest in Weddle

By all means, let's sign him so Tomlin can have him sit on the bench like Boykin.

Better yet, let him rework a deal with San Diego THEN we go ahead and trade our 1st round pick that turns into a 2nd if Weddle doesn't play 50% of the snaps next year. Then, when week 13 rolls around, Weddle finally sees the field becomes the secret weapon unleashed and we ride his 15 interceptions and 7 touchdowns to the super bowl.

Didn't we get an aging cast off on the decline from SD last year? How did that work? If he wants to play for a SB over cash considerations then by all means sign him to a 2 year 5M deal with about a million in bonuses. I have a feeling his market value will be much higher than what we should feel comfortable offering him. Building a team by signing declining vets based on past performance is not how championships are won.

Reports are saying the Steelers to express interest in Weddle

No one is "reporting" that the Steelers are interested in going after Weddle. It's just speculation by Jeremy Fowler of ESPN...he was basically saying "the Steelers should consider Weddle as an option in free agency" and then a bunch of nonsense web sites turned that into the headline "Steelers interested in Weddle".

But it only takes one team to overpay Beachum...

Completely agree and with an existing cap bottom and a lot of crappy teams needing to sign players don't be surprised for at least one team betting serious money on Beachum

I am high on Villa for one big reason: MUNCH-CHECK!

One report I saw said Villa basically sucked more than any LT in the NFL, but I didn't think he was that bad; I thought he was mostly solid and did as well as you could expect from a virtual rookie who only played the position for a year, at most.

Villanueva has one thing very few have, he's a god damned warrior. You don't get very many Army Ranger LT's (and I don't mean left tackle) in the NFL. I am ok with giving him a one year prove it opportunity to nail down that LT (left tackle) position. I have a feeling he will improve and keep Ben as clean as possible.

Most of us thought we were in fine cap shape, turns out we are in the 4th worst shape of all teams.

I'm not that worried about it, but our situation isn't as rosy as we thought. And I no longer think our front office is so crafty and clever.

Other teams seem to find ways to create way more cap room than we EVER have, and I'm not just talking about cellar dwellers either.

I think there is something basically antiquated with how we operate.

Well look at the two teams in the Super Bowl, they picked #1 and #2 just 4 years ago, that helps too, we having had a top 10 pick since what, 2000?

Believe we took Plaxico Burress at #8 in 2000 and haven't been in the top 10 since then.
