“Even during my playing days, I really didn’t have to do anything with pain management,” Harris told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “I’ve never had any long-term pain. I’ve been pretty lucky all the way back to high school. I’m even more amazed that at 67 I’m not dealing with more issues.”

But Harris knows the time may come when an old football injury — or just age — catches up with him. And as a result, he’s become an advocate for marijuana as a safer painkiller than opioids.

“I will tell you this, if it ever comes to a point where I do need pain management, I’d feel very lucky and happy now that we have medicinal marijuana in Pennsylvania,” Harris said.

Harris is urging the NFL to take marijuana off its banned substance list and allow players to use it if prescribed by a doctor, which is now legal in most states.

“The NFL is reviewing its position on medical marijuana,” Harris said. “They’re really reviewing their whole pain management regimen and how those things are handled, but if you don’t mind me giving you my personal feeling, I feel in any state that has approved medical marijuana, the league should remove medical marijuana from being a banned substance. I feel that recreational marijuana should be a banned substance in the NFL, but medical marijuana has a different composition.”

Owwwww, my knee

Lol, slash....

not sure I'd want, more, players running around on the field stoned. could see off-season use.
may be the reason T.O. ate the popcorn during the game

**** I thought this was gonna be from James Franco's mouth.

Considering some of the drugs Lawrence Taylor and Micheak Irving have confessed to using on the field................THC is minor

Salute the nation

Pot is a ****** pain killer. It sure as hell doesn't improve mental focus or memory.

I don't get why a professional athlete would smoke weed. They rely on their lungs to perform, and since the effect on the lungs is worse than cigarettes, it makes no sense. Forget the getting high part, the lung damage is horrible

I'm telling you sign Bryant long term low guaranteed money as soon as reinstated. Weed going off the tested list is inevitable.

Smoking marijuana isn't the only way of ingesting it.

The argument is versus using opioids. I think when looking at it that way a discussion is certainly worth while.

This... Migraine sufferers love using weed because it works faster and is "natural." People with chronic pain also. NFL players should be able to use...

Franco is just lobbying for a lucrative Dorritos endorsement deal.

I just think they should say we are no longer testing for it. If you get into trouble with the law because of it we will suspend you under the personal conduct, so smoke in your house.

The NFL can't even define a catch and some are worrying about weed.

My mother and her boyfriend are doing work for a medical marijuana company that is specializing in CBD (Cannabidiol). It essentially takes all the psychotropic effects out of the drug and gives you all the pain relief, swelling reducing, and other medical properties. It's fascinating stuff, and just starting to take off.

This is where the medical aspect will move toward in the future. It's a cleaner product, with no side effects, or mental state changes. I could see that getting approved by the NFL.

Maybe give a time allowance like nothing before 12 before the game etc.

That way you won't be impaired in the field and risk injury to other players.
