I realize this team is not making a switch to 4-3. However, on the modern NFL you are in base so little anyways. I was thinking that when they go four on the defensive line you have Watt and Tuitt who really have the defensive end body length. Now Tuitt is a 3-4 DE but if he was on the weakside contain would be minimized. Then you got shorter thicker guys who can still run in Heyward and Grave Digger. You also have Williams who is a traditional thumper Mike Linebacker and a natural aggressive fast Will in Dupree and the ultra fast cover guy in Shazier for the Sam Linebacker. Now like I said you can't make this your base. You have very few backups. But I think you could trot this alignment out pretty well if all the pieces are in place

3-3-5 should be the new normal

Who do you have in that alignment.

same as you: Tuitt, Hargraves, Heyward;
then Dupree, Shazier, Harrison (Watt),
then Burns, Sutton (Gay/Sensabaugh), Cockrell
Mitchell, Davis

I would like to see 4 down lineman on the fid at one time rushing the QB in known passing downs. Why not? Our LBer's just get swallowed up by the OL anyways....which results to zero pressure.

I think having a healthy Heyward next to Tuitt and a seasoned Hargrave will open up room for Harrison and Dupree to rush

I just think that on some first downs you would have a lot of gap control with 4 DL. And if they go pro series you still have 4 pretty serious past rush guys coming at the QB.

but Walton is no pass-rusher, Alualu seems more like a rotational player. Harrison playing a hybrid like horseface might be a solution

We would be flagged every time in this formation

We kinda do play a lot of 4 man fronts when they line up heyward and tuitt inside and stand up Dupree and Harrison... I think we will see watt lineup outside with Harrison inside of him letting watt set the edge and letting Harrison find the quickest path to the quarterback so he can mash him

Harrison is NOT a MLB, Dupree is pretty good but can't play two positions.....YET, POTENTIAL 12 men on the field (take Dupree out but which one??

Might work....

That's my point. I think Watt, Heyward, Tuitt and Grave Digger are it. No depth for a four front. Honestly if Alualu is a player McCullers is cut. He really offers nothing. This is a giant by regular standards but real giants are largely useless.

Just like the press CB situation. We have had years to add DL to our roster to allow us to do more fronts. Tombert just has a different vision then some of us fans. I would have moved to a 4 - 3 alignment when we moved on from Dick. By now we could easily had the personnel to run it. Oh well.

When DL left I wanted a whole new DC. One that was NOT Dick's 12yr proteshae (sp). Until new staff is brought in I'm afraid we are stuck with the same O'l bullshit. 10yard Cushing and slow to the QB, especially if it's a quick release QB. The new NFL and rules have taken PITTSBURGH out of the DEFENSIVE mode accustomed to our brand.

**** the NFL

I agree 100% with this post. Spot on.

People have to realize you can only do what your talent allows and there are only 3 maybe 4 qbs that can truly exploit this defense. If the steelers get a pass rush they will not either.

I disagree. Most QB's exploit this defense. It is just not every team is as good as the Steelers all around and in the end win win most of the games.....but bad teams consistently hang around with us week in and week out. Our soft cushion allows bad QB's to make high percentage short passes all game long. It moves the chains. It not only tires our defense out but keeps our offense off of the field.

What I see is a defense that bends against most teams but is pretty damn stingy in the last 20 yards and doesn't give up many big chunk plays. Now would I like them to play lock down man and big pressure. Well of course. I just think they are slowly building their defense. They were in the upper half/third of most key categories last year. It is unrealistic to be great in every phase of the game. With the line, QB and skill people on offense 24 plus per game should never be a problem neither. But it isn't always that easy. To me this whole team isn't predicated on anything but turnover ratio. They win that battle they win the games.

Who's "proteshae"??? That girl sounds FIIIINNEEE!!!

protégé LOL

Oh, we do have a good 4 man front when we run our base nickel D...

DE - Harrison DT - Tuitt DT - Heyward DE - Dupree
LB - Williams LB - Shazier
CB - Cockrell FS - Mitchell SS - Davis DB - Golson DB - Burns

3-3-5
DE Heyward
DT Hargrave
DE Tuitt
OLB Dupree
MLB Shazier
OLB Harrison/Watt

CB Burns
CB Cockrell
Slot: Golson/Sutton
FS Mitchell
SS Davis

I'll go with what I would guess above.

The Steeler defense excelled when we had a cover corner (Ike) take out the top receiving threat on the other team.
Today it would be nice to have two such players to take out the two top threats. I think Burns could be one of these guys
with the other to be determined.
