Now do you see how awful it is without preseason? This should be one of the most exciting times of the year. Seeing the new guys, seeing the improvement of young vets. Practice reports followed by a game to look forward to each week.

Now there's nothing.

It's like football hasn't started. This is what whiny journalists who say cancel preseason seem to want. I know in a normal year, there would be scrimmages, but those likely wouldn't be on TV. It wouldn't be the same. It doesn't get you excited for the season.

Expect to see a lot of ****** football as they work out the kinks in sloppy regular season games. This is what the NFL wants with an 18 game schedule. Screw that.

I don't miss the preseason at all. I miss camp battles. I'm doing a lot of reading and watching the team zoom meetings, so at least I'm getting a bit of a fix from that.

To me, this is better than losing players in meaningless games.

Wonder if the Dallas Cowboy McCoy who in preseason. tore up his leg and got cut the next day misses preseason. Lost millions of dollars. If I was a player I would want zero preseason games and would practice sparingly.

When he got hurt sure made Levon Bell look good in my mind. It sux these guys can get hurt in practice and get cut. I know he agreed to the terms if he rehurt his leg. But dude never should have signed that contract.

Crazy sport where it can all be taken away on one play or practice. I personally would on risk it for meaningless games

Edit: DIDN’T READ COPES LAST LINE IN HIS POST TILL AFTER I POSTED

I think the preseason is an important part of evaluation and yes I enjoy watching the new players. This is certainly not optimal. But 4 games is too much. And if someone is a season ticket holder they are kinda getting soaked for two more games.

I'm the same way. Training camp has been a big loss because you can get an up close and personal look at the guys. I can't say I've missed watching preseason games or getting ripped off with ticket prices. They don't need to completely go away, but the NFL needs to get it down to 1 or 2 games. If they're keeping 4 it's time to start charging minor league prices for the games because that's the quality you get most of the time.

Preseason should be about players and teams building up to the season - getting into football shape, getting up to game speed, prepping body for the contact that is to come, learning new plays/schemes, etc. You just don't need 4 preseaon games for that. I believe the mind and body and teams are not just an on/off switch and need some time to ramp up to big challenges like an NFL season. I would start with a few days of no pads - just conditioning, plays, schemes, etc...this is also the start of chemistry buidling. Phase 2 would be to put on helmets and shoulder pads for a few days but no contact and then I would move to full contact for a bit and include a controlled scrimmage with another team. Steelers used to do it with the No-Names each year. They would each take turns running 10 plays and whisltes were quick. then I would have two preseason games at most. That gets you an evaluation game, a couple of chances to cycle up a "game planning week" and a game for your vets to have a quarter or two to go full steam while the last roster battles are resolved. Yea, that introduces chances a player can get hurt, but it is a contact sport. The body/mind and team need some cycles to come together. You just can't eliminate all risk of injury. At some point, players gotta play.

I don’t understand the point about losing guys in meaningless games. You do realize that if they go to 18 games, the risk of injury goes way up. Most vets play sparingly in preseason. Add in 2 more regular season games and they are at far greater risk.

lots of preseason injuries are practice injuries anyway. Guys blow out a knee when their foot slips or they get caught in an awkward position. That risk still remains whether they play preseason games or not.

Let’s face it. Preseason is not about the vets anyway. It’s about the young players. End of roster guys need reps to learn and prove themselves. Preseason is the only time many of them get meaningful reps and it’s precisely because the veterans don’t play as much. Once regular season starts, practice reps are just for starters with a few reps for backups.

If the NFL wants to keep going this route then they absolutely need a developmental league.

I would think the no preseason should put more pressure on the coaching. Having your team ready. Better analysis of your players in camp.
Not just head coaching, positional coaching, communication with each other. Every game matters, never mind the old excuses about rust. All the teams are in the same boat. Let’s hope they are up to the task.

We are ******

PRE-SEASON is needed but NOT 4/5 games worth of it, 2 max. All teams need game time evaluation but that can be condensed. The NFL has shown time and again it's "GREED" machine color's. Force purchase tickets to season ticket holders (and not at discounted price). Thins are changing and with it the quality of the NFL is deteriorating immensely.

I myself personally don't need a DRUG LIKE NFL "FIX" to make it through life. In the past there was a time but that seems like a lifetime ago in football life time, back when it was actually a game as meant to be played. Today's game is a watered down player & rule game to cater to fantasy football, a money generator for you guessed it, the GREED Machine.

I think as the season progresses it will become more clear that the more "woke" the NFL becomes the less $$$$$$$ they will see and the "woke" will fade hoping to draw back the $$$$$$$ loss.

Salute the nation

I could take it or leave it, but it was a good opportunity to see who might make the cut. Generally we cut the players most expected to get a shot so its a Catch-22. Plus the starters who haven't blown something out in the first couple weeks don't really shake off the rust and get into playing shape until October/November anyways. By then it feels like football season.

Will be interesting to see how many are carted off the first couple weeks because their poor off-season workouts and not being in football shape did not truly show its cards during what would have been the pre-season.

I hope the XFL with the Rock in charge, becomes a true developmental league.

I hope the XFL replaces the NFL and brings back the game of football we enjoyed watching about 10-15 years ago.

I think the XFL should take high school players and anbody else and be a true developmental league. Let kids choose XFL or NCAA. Let it be like the baseball model. I believe that high school kids can choose to play in the minors or go to college and if they choose college then they have to stay for 3 years (i believe).

The NFL should form that kind of relationship with college and the XFL. I still think most kids would choose NCAA but a few would choose to get paid immediately. Good. Let them go pro and leave college alone.

I think most would choose to get paid and forget the free degree that many don't stick around long enough to earn anyways. We'll see though, should be interesting to see how it all evolves and pans out.

If the XFL does start recruiting high school grads and pays them, no doubt the NCAA will follow suit the next hour to keep up their brand. A salary and a degree and a shot at the next level. What a deal

Who will pay a top HS kid more? The XFL or the P5 after they split from the NCAA?

Pre-season Games suck.

1. You only get to see vanilla offenses/defenses called.
2. Starters sit most of the time
3. Scrubs are playing against scrubs in hopes of contributing on special teams
4. Tomlin practices losing challenges

The only thing we like about the games are seeing the rookies/free agents play a few downs before the fringe players stumble onto the field.

Just scrimmage like all other levels of football, televise it, and mic up the coaches so that we can hear what they're telling players.

3 weeks away from real football. Lets hope they can win the battle against Covid and get this season going.
