OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco wasn't in a rush to sign a contract that would make him among the highest-paid players in NFL history.

Flacco said the sides hammered out the three-year extension quicker than he anticipated, and the deal was essentially completed earlier in the week. But he chose to "sleep on it" before officially agreeing to the contract Wednesday.

"This only happens two or three times in a career," Flacco said at Wednesday's press conference. "I had to sit back and remind myself what a big deal this is and what a big decision this is. I'm as happy as can be. I'm not going to think about this another day past today."

The three-year agreement is worth $66.4 million and includes an NFL record $40 million signing bonus, a source told ESPN's Adam Caplan. This allows the Ravens to keep their franchise quarterback under contract through 2021 and alleviates some restless nights in the future for general manager Ozzie Newsome.

"I just spent about five days with GMs [at the NFL combine] that are looking for a Joe Flacco," Newsome said. "They're not sleeping at night. I can tell you that. Joe is our quarterback and I'm proud to say that."

Flacco's signing bonus is $3 million more than what any other NFL player had ever received. The deal also includes $44 million fully guaranteed ($40 million in a signing bonus and a $4 million base salary in Year 1), according to Caplan.

Flacco, though, said money wasn't a motivating factor for the deal.

Keeping Joe Flacco through 2021 just as important as additional cap space for Ravens
While the Ravens were probably hoping for a little more cap space, securing Joe Flacco for the long term is just as important as the short-term economics.

"Once this thing is signed and over with it, [winning] is all that we're worried about," Flacco said. "This gives us the best chance to move forward over the next five, six years. It's a huge window to go win another Super Bowl."

The Ravens lowered Flacco's $28.55 million cap number, which was the third-highest in the NFL, and created $6 million in cap space just a week before free agency begins. But Newsome said that's not what prompted the sides to hammer out a new deal.

"We did not do a deal to gain cap room," Newsome said. "We did a deal so Joe Flacco could be on this football team for the next six years."

Flacco, 31, won a Super Bowl four years ago and his 85 wins (including playoffs) rank fourth among starting quarterbacks since he entered the league in 2008. He's the Ravens' all-time leading passer in yards (28,322), touchdown passes (162), completions (2,479) and attempts (4,070).

Newsome, who went through 15 starting quarterbacks in the 12 years before Flacco's arrival, acknowledged he has a special appreciation for franchise quarterbacks.

"Teams struggle with the quarterback position," Newsome said. "Philly signing [Sam] Bradford and Washington having to put the franchise tag on [Kirk] Cousins. They don't have the resume that Joe has. For us to being moving with a guy that's got eight years, one Super Bowl and been in three AFC Championship Games, that speaks volumes."

so Flacco will be for 6 more years with the ravens at about 25M every year. That's pretty penny for eLite Joe

I'm very happy with this.. and they only saved 6 mil in cap room. Colbert laughs at them..

Happy with it , I am sure Jump ball Joe is also...

IDK, I am mostly ambiguous on this one.

1. At least it gives them stability if nothing else. Joe ain't a top 5 QB, but there are a lot worse. His run a few years ago towards the Super Bowl was very impressive. He throws a great deep ball, if he has someone to throw it to. They could be worse off; they could be like the Browns, switching QBs every single year.

2. On his own he doesn't make them invincible. Last year showed without the supporting cast, he ain't crap, but let's pump the breaks. We were the only team they swept last year, and one of the only teams they even found a way to beat.

I think this knocks his cap numbers down to 22.55, 24.55 and 24.75 the next 3 years.

-edit-

Albert Breer of NFL Media has the salary cap figures, for 2016 through 2021: $22.55 million; $24.55 million; $24.75 million; $26.5 million; $28.25 million; $24.24 million

I wouldn't be surprised if they regret this move sometimes prior to 2021.

I doubt it. If you have anything that closely resembles a franchise quarterback you are going to pay to keep them. Flacco isn't that great, but he's won a Super Bowl and has played well against us. But this should quiet the crowd that thinks only the Steelers overpays players that they value.

Three more years of kicking Joes ***. The Steelers are moving up whilst the Ravens are moving down

I wouldn't crow yet - they swept us last year. Without Joe the second time, which makes it even worse.

Steelers play down to every ****** team, I actually like the Steelers chances better when the rats improve..........

Swept last year and Joseph wasn't in the second one...........

Oddly, that is the exact scenerio I was thinking. Signing Joe is more of an addition by subtraction. They get Joey but lose out on who they don't get due to affordability.

If Flacco gets this much, I shutter at what Ben will demand when his extension is due.

his contract ends in 2019 when he will be 38, his next extension will be an extension chair for his retirement on a sunny beach

Look what Cousins and Bradford got and Joe is much better than either of those two guys. Joe is a proven winner, so the Ravens really didn't have a choice.

I was actually impressed when I read that Joe's been in 3, count em THREE afc championship games.

Say what you want, but he can't be all THAT bad. The Ravens are consistent if nothing else. I hate em, but I respect them.

Me too !!!! The ravens can be respected as they do play the game the way it should be, HARD. The bungles on the other hand can NOT be respected, at all. Malice is not respectable.

True, when the Raven beat you up, it's done fairly and between the lines.

Not so much with the Bengals. That's just a straight out cheap-shot festival. Those ******* nut-jobs have taken the Carson Palmer thing to a level of crazy that can't be undone.

Well when you hire the ones caged, you can't expect more than caged results. The bungles are so frustrated whith the STEELERS as we are everything they are NOT. Birthdefect & pac boy kept the streak going, thank you to them.
