Falcons coaching cost them a super bowl win!

Good point. Maybe I just don't remember the situation (how many TO did they have left, how much time on the clock? )

Pats had 2 TO (and 2min warning) and that holding penalty came at 3:44. That's a lot of time left.

Im curious as to why they never ran any screen plays for Freeman. Or some safe bootlegs or rollouts. Just doing deep drops and forcing Matt to try and read and react under that pressure played against Atlanta. So when they weren't converting 3rd downs, that defense just had to try and hold up and they had nothing to give 4th quarter. They played the absolute perfect way to lose a game in the 4th.
 
I think that the Falcons coaches wanted to make a statement and score a TD when a FG is all they needed. You know... 'We beat the Big Bad Patriots with ease' attitude. Stupid if that.

The only other explanation for going to the passing game is MAYBE they thought the Patriots expected them to run to kill clock and wanted to take advantage of the defense defending the run. But if that was the case, they were overthinking it WAY too much.
 
3 runs, a fg and Atlanta is hosting a parade today, that simple.
After the pass to Jones the plays were
-run for -1
- sack for loss of 12, NE timeout with 350 left
-@ me 35, so that's a 52 yard FG, in his range if they don't gain anything. The throw again, and get a holding penalty.
-3rd down incomplete with 3:44 left.

and they were playing with their backup RT at that point. You need to run it there or at least have a quick throw.
 
Maybe Ryan didn't make the best play. Also he is an experienced QB. He could have checked out of the call at the line. But still you called a pass in a situation where you couldn't. No different then if it was a game winning field goal situation in my opinion. The guy blitzed the A gap and slid between the centre/guard. He was essentially unblocked. Ryan was put into a bad position.
 
I couldn't believe it when he dropped back to pass. I figured they had the game when Jones made his amazing catch. Even after the sack, they should have run it again. They were still in fg range, and a short run would have raised the odds of making the kick. Could NE still have won the game, sure. They could have blocked the kick, maybe ran it back. It's just that so many unlikely things would have needed to happen. Touchdown, two point conversion, onside kick recovered, then get at least a fg. You have to play the odds there.
 
It's horrible play calling. Once you get to the 22 you've got to do two things. Make sure you stay in 3 point range and make them use their time outs. That's it. Just fall into the pile three times for crying out loud. Now, given that your coaches are bone heads, Ryan has to "rise up" and realize he can't stand there like a damn statue. Get the ball out! Plus, milk the play clock! Ryan was snapping **** like he was playing Madden. It was a total cluster **** from top to bottom.
 
NE wins their last two Super Bowls because the other team didn't run the ball.

They definitely should have run on 2nd down, which eliminated the sack. They could have thrown on 3rd if it was a quick play action safe short pass.

All the games? NO. That would require 16 games a week during the season. I watch almost the entire Steelers season ( Minus a few plays ) and know a lot more about the game than you do. Lying isn't cool ya know.

No argument from me. Atlanta choked hard in the 2nd half and even more then running the ball to wind down the clock and kick a FG, their defense was left for dead by the offense. You've got to possess the football to keep your defense fresh. They made big plays to put them in a great position to win the game and found every way they could to give it away. Can't take away the end result. No one outside of NE wanted to see them win but they found a way.
 
They fired the defensive coordinator and staff. You get to the Super Bowl and then start firing coaches. Crazy! Sure glad I'm a Steelers fan. That coach did a great job this season with a very young D. No way do you fire him.
 
I believe coaches get intimidated when opposing Belicheck and they believe they have to do something "special" or "clever" to beat him...

This could be a true statement in a close game in the 4th quarter...but when your up by 25 late in the 3rd quarter, all you need to do against ANY team or Coach, is do the "basics" well, and call it a day.
 
Just about every point you guys made in this thread was mentioned on one of the local Sports talk radio station for the past week. Their fan base is still dealing with the lost more than anything, the play calling by the former Offensive Coord. & Matt Ryan, and the coaching changes that happen 48hrs after they got back to Atlanta from the SB.

Can't believe they used the D coach as the scape goat. That offense left their D out to dry after they were essentially responsible for putting 14 points on the board. I hope the Falcons go back to obscurity for their ineptitude.
 
This is a piss poor organization. There is just NO WAY, you fire your D coordinator after losing in the SB. They had a great season and he did a lot with a young team. Their O just needed one FG in their last several possessions and the game would have been over. You can't blame the D coordinator. Stupid move and as I said earlier, glad I am a Steelers fan. I would be surprised if Atlanta even gets to the NFC Championship game this year.
