Statement by Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert on Eli Rogers:

We are disappointed that Eli Rogers has been suspended for Week 1 of the regular season as part of the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

The suspension will begin following the final roster cutdown on September 1. He will be allowed to continue his rehabilitation and attend meetings at team’s headquarters, but he will not be permitted to practice with the team during his suspension or attend the Week 1 game.

Statement by an NFL spokesperson:

Eli Rogers of the Pittsburgh Steelers has been suspended without pay for the first game of the 2018 regular season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

Rogers will be eligible to return to the Steelers’ active roster on Monday, September 10 following the team’s September 9 game against the Cleveland Browns.

Rogers is eligible to participate in all preseason practices and games.

doubt he makes the final roster now

He isn't practicing yet and now this. Buh-bye! He won't be on the roster. No need to keep him.

was he going to be activated for the first game anyways?

probably some med from the knee procedure that he didn't declare correctly.
Just a guy. No loss.

Time Steelers get rid of Rogers, to many receivers are playing and having a good showing

Can't they retain his rights without cutting him if he is on suspended list or does he take a roster spot. If he doesn't perfect. You get a free look at someone else and if they are good enough you cut him.

I don't see this affecting the STEELERS roster at all. Correct me if I'm wrong but he has to be on an ACTIVE roster to be suspended. If he doesn't make the team then his suspension is held over till he acquires active roster status weather it be with the STEELERS or another team. I wasn't sure Eli was going to make the cut other than on the short term IR and then if needed he would be activated. I see this set back as possibly the dagger that gets him cut.

Salute the nation

That is why Eli was progressing ahead of the normal 9mos rehab schedule for ACLs. Now it makes sense to me.

Here's the thing though, He's on the PUP, and will probably be put on the season's PUP. Eli will come back this year, but you don't want to waste an IR return space on a guy you can just PUP. That's going to be the smart way to do it. Though I don't think his suspended game starts until he is activated to the roster. Some teams have held players from putting them on the IR, if they got hurt, and are about to serve a suspension. It could be a chance they IR Eli after week 1, but then he can't return until after their 9th game(Wk10). PUP, you can return after 6 games serve a suspension, and he only misses 7 games. That would be the better value there. PUP gives you 7 games, IR is 9.
