This Steelers-Dolphins Trade for Josh Rosen Actually Makes Sense
May 21, 2020 News&Rumors

Mason Rudolph proved to be a solid, if uninspiring, backup quarterback during the 2019 season, but Pittsburgh Steelers fans probably want a passer with a much higher ceiling behind Ben Roethlisberger.

That passer could be Miami Dolphins quarterback Josh Rosen, who was ranked as a consistently better prospect out of UCLA than Rudolph was at Oklahoma State in 2018. After the Tua Tagovailoa selection in the 2020 NFL Draft, Miami has been fielding calls on the former No. 10 overall pick.

A fifth-round pick might be all it takes to steal Rosen away from Miami.

Rosen struggled with the Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals, leading to the selections of Tua and Kyler Murray as his replacements, but a lot of his struggles can be attributed to factors outside of his control.

Rosen played behind horrible offensive lines, two rookie head coaches in Steve Wilks and Brian Flores, has dealt with three offensive coordinators in two seasons, and has thrown the ball to receivers that won’t exactly be confused for Jerry Rice anytime soon given their poor hands.

With a tremendous offensive line in Pittsburgh, JuJu Smith-Schuster at wide receiver, and Mike Tomlin on the sidelines, Rosen’s superb arm talent can finally shine with some stability around him.

Rosen has essentially been fed to the wolves during his two years as a pro QB, but Pittsburgh would be the best situation he has been in since his college days at UCLA.

On the one hand I'm tempted to say we already have two reclamation projects in Rudolph and Lynch. On the other hand .... it might be interesting to see what he has to offer and if Canada can unlock that talent. Soooo ... "he wasn't used properly, would look good in the black and gold", etc.

I would rather have a vet with more wins under his belt to backup Ben. It would be a no for me.

We already have 2 projects (rudolph and lynch). We don't need another unless we drop one.

Soooo....let me get this straight. The Dolphins secondary is one of the worst in the league and the Steelers trade for Minkah Fitzpatrick (drafted 11 overall) and give up the 1st round draft pick this year and you all go ape **** excited (Me included). The Steelers have the chance to grab the #10 over-all QB for maybe a FIFTH round draft pick and you all turn up your noses? What the serious ****? Two years with the Dolphins, Two rookie Head Coaches, three Offensive Coordinators, and his #1 WR is DeVante Parker with a bunch of scrubs as a supporting cast. Miami is essentially Cleveland of the south with far better weather and much hotter women. Josh Rosen is a ******* STEAL for a fifth round pick and I would pull the trigger on that trade in a nano-second.

So you guys are good with Duck and Lynch and JT Barrett I guess. SMFH

No.

Let Canada work with MR and Lynch as Ben's backups. Need to keep all the picks we can get. Having only 6 picks this year sucked. Gonna be a lot of things to address next year.

It would be stupid to not at least look and make an inquiry. Maybe a work out for Canada and then go from there. I'm NOT SAYING PULL THE TRIGGER BUT one needs to kick as many tires to find the right fit / ability / and Ora within.

Salute the nation

If we did not pull the trigger or make a bigger effort to sign Winston considering how cheap he went for, that leads me to believe this team is (perhaps incorrectly) set at QB backup positions.

I'm not sure I agree with that after the body of work they put up in 14 games last year, but I think Tombert have excuses for their performances we don't know about.

Honestly, I would rather have Winston and dump all three of our backups (Mason, Hodges and Lynch) but that's me. Since the team didn't agree with that, then they have a higher opinion of our backup group. When you look at it in that context, I don't know if Tombert believes Rosen is any better than what we have.

i agree, for a fifth, where do I sign??

For a 5th, it sounds more than reasonable. However, you may have to be willing to hold him for another year. Without the offseason and possibly a very abbreviated camp/preseason, he will get minimal practice to show what he can do in our system. But, sit him behind Rudolph for a year and let him compete for the backup job next year.

Honestly, I’d do it for a 7th but nothing else. Rudolph has better stats and was the same draft class. Lynch has a better SPARQ and a year of learning the offense under his belt. I feel Rosen would have a tough time making the roster so we might be renting a camp arm if we trade for him. Unless the Roethlisberger video was more hype than hope I probably pass.

I don't think that would send a good message to MR. Right now he is considered the next guy when Ben goes. I don't think Rosen brings that much more to the table.

Other than a franchise QB, I've never really been a fan of not drafting or trading for a position because it might tick off the guy on your roster. The GM/HC's job is to great as talented a roster as possible and let the cream rise to the top. If a guy can't handle the compete factor, he's not part of the cream.

Normally I would agree. But giving up a pick says that the steelers are not satisfied with who they have. It would go against everything they have said publicly the last few years. They have more holes to fill that 4th string qb.

Now a fifth for a ilb? Let's go.

I'd trade a seventh for Rosen. Lynch simply isn't good. Rosen still at least has some hope.

We're already developing Rudolph, and he's developing well. He went from a promising #3 in year 1 to the unquestioned and solid #2 last year. This year I expect a great backup QB, and year 4 he should be pushing to start. That is QB development. I know we don't do it, like at all, but that's how the rest of the league does it.

I really wish I saw what you saw in Rudolph last year. I just didn't see a franchise guy.

I saw improvement...but it was in a short time frame which makes it hard to measure. I ultimately didn't see enough to stamp it with the word confidence. Just left me with a lot of questions. **** there was times I wanted to throw him off the field to never be seen again. I just wish the Steelers would have brought him in some better competition. I thought it was the biggest reason for last seasons not good enough. The lack of a veteran presence behind Big Ben. Liked how they stocked this team beyond that. But for me that remains the biggest fail.

Two words Cope; Landry Jones

There have been others as well, it's not like the Steelers didn't try with Tee Martin, Dennis Dixon, or Scott Campbell. We have nothing but a ****-show behind Ben on the depth chart. We're destined for pre-season entertainment of Mason getting 80% of the snaps and Duck getting 19% with Paxton or J.T getting one series at the end against the opposing team's future XFL players.

Slash hit it best when he stated there is improvement from year to year. The Steelers did try to develop Landry, and tried getting draft capital for him when Dobbs beat him out in the preseason. That's what you want to ultimately do. Eagles and Pats do it. Develop a QB, until it's time to start him, or trade him for draft capital. Steelers tried to move Landry, no one wanted him. Dobbs got moved for a 5th, and that pick was packaged in the Minkah trade.

I do see that Rudolph had some bad games, but he had some good ones also, and won 5, which is more than any other backup we've had since Ben became the starter.

Landry was 3-2
Duck 3-3
Vick 2 -1
Dixon 2-1
Batch was 6-3 (in 8 years)
Lefty 0-1

So right now Rudolph is comparable to Batch, and he's only been on the team for 2 seasons. I didn't say he's the next Ben, but he's progressing from year to year, and I expect a big jump this season. Dobbs did the same, progressed in 2 years to force Landry off of the roster, then lost out to Rudolph (and Duck) last year, and the Steelers net a pick.
