As many of you know chargers de luiget got a 5 yr 50 mill extension with 30 mill guaranteed and soon jets de/dt Wilkerson will got a max extension before does with what luiget got a de/dt who is perhaps in the same tier group as heyward we should lock him up now at 26 a 6 year extension should take him through his prime days he wants to stay so he will likely take a home town discount I have in mind 6 years 50 million 22 mill guaranteed thoughts?

I hope it is a cap friendly deal and not a go crazy deal so we can keep the team together we are building. As good as he is he was still part of one of the defenses that was in the lower third of the league if my memory is correct. To me that says not a lot of these guys are worth a big payday. With that in mind he is in line for a decent contract not a spectacular one.

Home town discount. Cap friendly deal. Come on guys. Rea)ly? These phrases are thrown out here every time we have a guys that needs extended. Just another template I guess. Heyward will want to get paid just like all of our players do.

He will get payed but within the Steelers ballpark / plan.

The FO is notoriously late /slow getting contracts done. But I see his getting done within the next two months.

There is only so much money available. The team can not remain under the cap and pay everyone top money it just will not happen. Cap friendly does not equate to putting him in line for food stamps. It might just not be paying crazy money like Wallace got when he left and then lost that gig in Miami because he was too expensive for what he delivered. A deal that will allow him to make a good living and keep playing here is what he should be after and a deal that will not kill the chances of a team developing a good defense is what the team should be after.

I don't anticipate contract issues between Cam and the Steelers. Actually I think by summer's end he and Beechum will be re-signed to new contracts. Cam has been solid not spectacular the past few years and will be offered a contract in line I think more on what his potential or continued growth is projected to be. I can see him making the pro bowl a couple times in the next 5 years as this line starts to really gel and come together. I do not anticipate any "crazy" money but a fair one for both sides. I'll tell you who could be spectacular and thats Big Dan. I think this kid has the makings of an excellent NT but it will depend on him getting his opportunites over McClendon who I never liked at NT.

Heyward has become a real force. He could be our best defensive player this season, and worthy pro bowl selection.

2014 season = 55 tackles, 7.5 sacks, 4 passes defended ( as good as a sack for 0 yards ). Impressive production for a 3-4 End

The Steelers will not let the Chargers overpaying Luiget influence their contract negotiations, never have done this. Heyward was already going to get paid like one of the best 3-4 DEs in the league and they will likely get a deal done before camp or at least well before the start of the season.

Sounds like reality, i agree.

But he'd look good in black and gold, wasn't used properly..........

I think he is their #1 forces at this point. He will get a deal sometime in camp. He is well on his way to being one of the best lineman in football.

Our last 3 big signings.....Pouncey, Gilbert, and Ben. We sure got them at home town discounts or cap friendly deals right? Yet the exact same thing was said when we were trying to sign them to extensions also. I'm sure Heyward will get paid.

Many folks think Ben did sign a cap friendly deal based on his value, Pouncy has been to selected to pro bowls and as an all pro already and is considered likely to continue. Gilbert was considered by many to be over paid for what he has done to this point. Heyward has not been selected as an all pro if I recall correctly and was unable to get in front of Hood. If one of our ends begins to look like the next Aaron Smith the steelers will likely pay bigger money for him. Heyward has not been to that level yet and I do not expect him to be paid like that either. Generally the steelers are not prone to over paying for that type of talent. The steelers have had great defensive ends in the past and know what that looks like so far Heyward is not one of those guys.
