Washington, statistically, for the amount of plays he was on the field, has some of the worst production I've ever seen in a receiver. He ran a majority of the offensive snaps last year, and averaged around 1/2 yard per play. That is worse than putrid, it's abhorrent. It's why I'm not sure he's a lock. Heck they brought in Holton, who was better than Washington last year, at the same spot. Washington played with fire in college, he wilted in the pros. He's the type of player that needs to be talked up, not made an example of. Ben learned that last year when he went with the 'tough love approach' after his drop. It backfired, and he didn't improve much.
And I misspoke, those 5 receivers are fighting for 3 spots. Moncreif, JuJu, and DJ are locks. Spencer looks like DJ with better hands, but not as quick. Eli and Switzer are the same reciever. Slot only guys who can handle return duties, but neither are going to break a play in the return game. I think Eli has better hands and wiggle, but Switzer plays with more intensity. Both Diontaes are upgrades in the return game.
I would not be surprised if Spencer and Holton make it over Washington and Eli/Switzer. And personally, I keep Swtizer over Eli because of his diversity, of being able to line up at other spots, and backfield, thus being a little more diverse on the offensive looks.
Though this is all speculative, and I will be following these battles closely once we hit training camp. I will also add, that I was very impressed with Spencer's tape. I think he's going to be making a lot of noise in camp this year.
We will also be keeping 6 WRs, because there isn't a 4th TE or 4th RB (not counting the FB) that would be better than our 6th receiver, who will usually be inactive anyway.
