Did anyone else know what the fan cost index (fci) was?

The fci is the average cost of taking a family of 4 to an NFL game. Last year it was just south of $500... $489 to be precise. It factors in ticket price, some concessions, and a little merchandise. The cap increase will only make this number go up. How many families of 4 in today's economy can afford to spend a week's takehome pay on a 3 hour sporting event? I know there's no ******* way in hell I'm dropping half a grand on a football game. I just think its a shame that the average working Joe can't afford to see a game in person.

There are plenty of average joes that can "afford" it. They just have ****** up priorities. I have a sister-in-law whose family of 6 has season Pens tickets. They don't have a 401k, 529b, life insurance, etc.

Being retired, I have given up the idea of live football games....and training camp for that matter. I get to see a Jags/Steelers preseason game this year because the tickets were donated but the game has realistically far outpaced my means.

I've never seen a family of 4 at a football game.

Try bringing a family from Canada! It is f@cked up and if you broke it down like you just did no one would go. I just look at it like this we are on this earth for so many days. The money comes and goes. Making memories is the most important thing in life. So I spend too much on groceries to collect the air miles and I referee twenty to thirty games a year to justify it. We thought last year was a once in a lifetime so we bought 20 yard line 15 rows up. We all enjoyed so much we are going again. Though we bought face value first 7 rows of the upper deck at arrowhead.

$500? That wouldnt even cover my bar tab

yeah, just way too much money nowadays. i go to a game once every 3-4 years or so, that's good enough for me. otherwise I'm perfectly content to sit on my lazyboy and drink beers that cost $.50 cents or so a bottle, or at a friends/family member's home. Hell, even the bar isn't THAT bad, a couple of drinks over a few hrs, maybe a burger or some wings, shouldn't run you more than $40-50 (I guess that's determined by each individual's definition of "a few beers")

It is just everywhere. If you told me as a teenager that it would cost 60 bucks to take my family to a movie with popcorn and a drink I wouldn't have believed you either. The popcorn's value is less than a quarter and they charge 8 bucks. As long as people have enough disposable income and are willing to shell it out, it will continue.

I've never been one to eat and drink in the stadium. That's what tailgating is for. The stadium is for sobering up and watching the Steelers, but even with a family of 4, if you're lower level, that's $400 for seating alone, and over $600 in the premium zones.

Yeah, I don't do much spending in the stadium. While we all gasp at ticket prices, Steeler fans own 30-50% of away game stadiums. Amazing.

I'm an average working Joe and can afford season tickets. I just prioritize my entertainment dollars on the Steelers.

i'm so tired of the "too expensive to take my family of 4 to blah blah blah". movies, disneyworld, vacation, sporting events
you have a ******* family of 4. YES IT'S EXPENSIVE
**** costs money. perhaps you should have thought of that while you were reproducing like rabbits

I read that in 1986, a one day pass to Disney was $12.50, now they're upwards of $100. That way outpaces inflation.

stop going there.
simple as that

The sad part of it is those people who spend their life pissing their money away you and I will have to pay for when they retire and have no money. People cry when grandma and grandpa are eating kibble because they are trying to survive off of social security. Well, maybe they should have saved and invested better. I am not saying our government doesn't piss our 6.4%+6.4% employer match away but we have the dems to blame for socialism security.

I just don't get the demand for many things. When I go to Kennywood, or a Steelers game, or the movies, or a restaraunt, I'm usually put off by how much money I spend and I'm fairly wealthy. How more modest people afford these things baffles me.

I'm just hoping they don't make social security means based and tell responsible people they don't need theirs.

I grew up on a tight budget. Never went to one professional sporting event, went to Kennywood twice. My parents had the money to go to those things, but chose to spend their money elsewhere. It's a giant event. Something your kids will remember all their lives. I don't think that it should come as something expected and routine as going to Chuckie Cheese or something. I didn't go to my first pro event until I went to Yankee stadium to see the first baseball game after the work stoppage in the mid nineties. It's not a common event and should be appreciated. I don't have any issue with the cost.

There is enough demand because with credit lines etc. most people live well outside their means. I live where I grew up. When we saw a Porsche when I was a kid it was a bit of a big deal. Now I see three or four of them every day along with the odd Ferrari, Lotus etc. in the summer. Now is that expansion of wealth (to some extent), but mostly it is people fine with living in huge debt.

I live five and a half hours away from Pittsburgh in Lansing, Michigan. I have to buy tickets second hand, for Steelers games the nose bleeds run a hundred each easy. The travel, hotel, booze, food and going out while in town are just the price you have to pay if you want to experience it. The games are an extracurricular that I have to plan ahead for. When the schedule and the money don't match up I take a year off like this past season. I've met a lot of people from this board over the years and we remain friends to this day, even if it's from a distance. Well worth it for me, but I can understand how it isn't for others.
