By Jared Villani SteelerNation.com Pittsburgh Steelers rookie linebacker Devin Bush is poised for a big season, but what exactly has helped him get to this point with the team thus far? It’s likely former Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier has a lot to do with Bush’s success so far. Once training camp begins on July 25th, […]

How do you think Bush will do this year? Rookie of the Year? Pro Bowl? Let us know in the comment section below!

I would be just happy with him being solid against the run, and helping shoring up a positional coverage weakness existing since Shalieve went down.

I see him as himself. I see him able to do the middle cover that has been missing. I'm glad he can mentor from Shazier and that is awesome assets to have as a rookie. PUT the pads on and we will see his effectiveness ahead of the rookie curve. Thank You Ryan for your contributions along the way.

NICE write up STEELERNATION.com

In his first year, if he's better than what we put on the field last year, I will be very happy. I don't expect All Pro in his first year but in his 2nd and 3rd year, my hopes are he will be in the pro bowl.

**** that...I want the BEST ILBer that has ever suited up for this game we call football. Or maybe something close to that. :)

I don't fully understand Shaziers contract other than it provides health care benefits. I'm not sure its against the cap, but I sure am glad he is a part of this organization. First class individual.

Rocky Bleir would be a similar situation in respects to Shazier's, except there was no cap back then.

Shazier's salary is on the cap this season as it was last season.
Yeah just checked. League minimum 473 K on the cap. Maybe they could keep him off the cap by giving him a special assistant role. Though I would kinda assume if he was going to attempt a comeback it would be next year or never. More than three years out of the game is a lot. I've never cared if he played again. Just hpappy to see him walking. But I do have to admit he looks good. Fromp the upper body he still looks like a linebacker.

Seems like a no-brainer to hire him as some form of coach and you dont have the cap hit.

However, i think i read somewhere that keeping him as a player allows him access to the doctors and workouts afforded to the players.

If you hired him as some form of coach, but all he did was player type workouts a d doctor stuff, the NFL would, probably, rule he is, really a player and not a coach. Its not like we are the *'s and can circumvent the salary cap any way we want.

Terry Bradshaw should raise a stink on the TB12 but I realize he doesn't have the trade mark. ONE BIG DIFFERENCE, we the steelers could circumvent the cap just like any other of the 30 teams who chose not to. The c heat riots are the ONLY team who continuously cheat to get the unfair advantage and it goes way deeper than just the "cap" hit.

You are probably right here. Having him listed as a player probably allows him to access different things. And yes the Steelers are not the Pats. I would imagine it comes to a conclusion one way or the other next year. I think he tries to play next year or hopefully if that doesn't go he becomes an assistant on the staff.

I am with slash on this one..

I am still very skeptical of his ability to shed blockers and plug up the middle...
Hopefully Im wrong...we shall see very shortly because if he does not have the physicality needed, it will be noticed immediately between the lines..

Personally, I think it should be Williams job to do the heavy lifting in the middle. Bush should stop the edge runs and present the physically gifted athlete that plays the pass and blitzes.

That makes it even more concerning to me Sask..

Williams has shown he is not that guy either...

I mean the effort and attitude is there...but the results are lacking..

Williams is fine at plugging the middle. He can blitz too. He just can't play in space. That will be Bush's role. And if you watch Bush's tape it wasn't like he was getting eaten up in the middle either.

I wish I could share your optimism on this....

Hope your correct man.

Don't get me wrong. Some of the projections here on him are silly. And lets not forget that Shazier didn't blow up the league at the beginning of his career, but I truly believe Bush makes this defense better than it was last year. And I don't think he will bust at all.

Williams WAS that guy before Shazier got hurt. He was playing well. When the other ILB changed personnel, Williams had to play a different game that he is not as well suited to play.

Ark is right. It's a classy move by the Steelers to make sure he has the best care in the world. UPMC is the best hospital for sports related injuries, and the entire country goes there for treatment.

Also, since he's on minimum, he may fall in the rule of 51 so he may not count against the cap this season. Since only the highest 51 salaries count against the cap.

I hope he does fall into that 51 rule, NOT to be low payed but to keep his medical going. The STEELERS are a very special franchise when it comes to taking care of thier players. Not every player can be helped and circumstances are very different per individual. The SDTEELERS have shown great compassion over the years and RYAN is a beneficiary of that trait.

Cope, I thought if a player’s salary is tolled the salary for that player does not count towards the cap, as the player is ineligible to participate (like a suspension).

I need to check the CBA..

Doesn't say anything definitive about the cap but.........
Simply put, when a contract tolls, it effectively means it has been put on hold for a year, transferring over to cover the next season instead. The same thing also happened to the contract of Martavis Bryant when he missed a year due to suspension in 2016.

As per the CBA.

“Any player placed on a Physically Unable to Perform list (“PUP”) will be paid his full Paragraph 5 Salary while on such list. His contract will not be tolled for the period he is on PUP, except in the last year of his contract, when the player’s contract will be tolled if he is still physically unable to perform his football services as of the sixth regular season game.”

If not for the Steelers’ decision to restructure the contract of Shazier in 2018, his contract would have tolled at a rate of $8.718 million, but he will now be under contract for one more year at a salary of $805,000 instead.

Shazier will start the year on the PUP list again in 2019 and it should be expected that his contract will toll once more in 2020. But by keeping him on the roster rather than signing him to a coaching role as some have suggested, Shazier will add another year of service to his NFL pension and will be able to continue his rehabilitation at the team’s facilities at their expense.
So to my eye, they are probably paying a small cap hit, most importantly Ryan is accruing years toward his pension which in his case likely will be the biggest thing financially. And I would like to think that should he make a legitimate comeback (which is his decision alone) it will be as a Steeler as I'm sure they have his good will.
