Defense!!!!

If they put a whole game together, no one will stand a chance

Even the 1st half wasn't bad at all. These guys seem to be coming together and it could make for a super ending to the season

I fully agree with you Coolie..........................many here seem to think it's "EARLY" or "SCRUB QBs" or something excuse wise to down play them. Cincinnati's offense has been clicking of late and our "D" shut them down. This "D" is improving and Gelling more and more as the season progresses and I, as you, am looking forward to watching this "D" play out. Cudo's

We'll see next week, we let KC move the ball all over us in the 4th when we knew they were throwing, Cincy OLine is trash, a rookie RB, and one legit NFL WR. They played great, but Cincy's offense is blah

I hear what you are saying but before they fired OC they were averaging 4.5points per game. New OC is averaging 25 points per game. Did it really seem like the bungles were threatening or our "D" was collapsing?? NO it seemed like our "D" had them under control which is what a "D" is suppose to do. Will they face better opponents...YES. Will they handle them as well..........time will tell but I'm in the groups that wants them to do well.

Bring it Stafford...................bring it all day as we will have the answer, not in a cheating answer way mind you.!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a very young defense as well. Mitchell is the old man of the starters at 30. Haden and Heyward are next at 28.

And what happened on their last drive when we knew they were throwing, and had a chance to win the game?

Uh... Defense happened...

Damn people calm down, never said our D was bad or ******. I don't think Cincy's O is that good, we haven't played a QB like Stafford, I'm curious to see how we do against him.

Yardage wise only Alex Smith was the better yardage QB the Steelers faced so far.

Completion percentage you have to throw Dalton with Smith in there ahead of Stafford.

So yes another good test for the pass D.

Detroit has the 21st ranked runner, so they like to throw more than pass. The Steelers should be able to scheme for that, they have the capable players.

Detroit has the 26th ranked O overall, so not a Juggernaut. But capable.

On D Detroit comes in at 19th. 22nd against the pass.9th against the run. So pretty good in run defense. Somewhat similar to the Bengals in defending the run as far as average against. 3.7 compared to 3.8. So although a good run D, it doesn't necessarily mean great. Perhaps pass in this one to set up the run.

Overall this looks like the game you want your passing game clicking.

I'm still worried about the run D despite having shut down Hunt. This is the same defense that bent over and spread their cheeks as the Jags pounded away. We let them run 12 times for like 80+ yards and put the game away after the two pick-sixes. We absolutely wrecked the Bengals, but Mixon was hurting us despite getting few touches (Lewis is a dumbass and apparently not about to take blame).

The difference between this year and most is we finally have two solid corners with ball skills, and added more pass rusher who can pressure a QB into throwing it away, or sacking him.

One negative play on 1st or 2nd down, and 3rd down become much easier. And we've got guys who can make plays to force a punt on 3rd down.

I like this defense a lot. A guy like Tuitt can be out and we don't miss a beat.

Not coming down on you Coryea, I'm interested to see how he's handled this weekend too.

I agree with everything but i have a Tuitt point. Both games that we lost, Tuitt did not play in, and the D had a lot of trouble stopping the run. When he's in, the team does a much better job of disrupting the LOS at the snap. I will admit that Alualu was phenomenal yesterday. He was big, disruptive, and aside from one running play, this D owned the running game at the LOS.

Some of that might have been Alualu getting acclimated to this defense. As time in the scheme and to see your mistakes on film, could be what we saw yesterday and moving forward.

But I am glad Tuitt will be back. As he is the obvious better of the two.

One pet peeve for me is the coaching staff not finding a way to get Hargrave on the field more. Example when Tuitt isnt playing no way should Alualu be getting reps over Hargrave in the nickle in obvious pass situations. Should not be happening

I agree Slash. I'm starting to think about this team's run, and health is going to be very important to maintain this level of defensive play. This team will be less dominant if any of the starters or Hilton is injured. The only players we can continue to maintain without for a significant amount of time would be Mitchell, Williams (though I love his improvement), Watt/Bud (Because we have good depth at OLB).

This is a defense of fast, athletic difference makers. This team stopped drafting college standouts, and started drafting athletes, and it's starting to show up on the field now. Shazier is a freak, no one plays LB at that size and can run a 4.4 40. Sean Davis, is rangy and is settling into this defense. Burns is already outperforming the most optimistic of expectations, Watt and Bud are quick, strong, and athletic. And the front 3 are all disruptive with speed, quickness, power, and technique. This D is sooo fun to watch, it's like watching the great Steeler D with Pola, Ike, Woodley, Potsie, Harrison, Porter, Hampton, Keisel, Clark, and Smith. That D was an all time great group of defenders. I aside from Polamalu (and maybe Ike), I think this new group is more athletic than the previous #1 D we had.

I will say, I hated the Jarvis Jones pick, like most everyone else here. But if we learned one thing from that draft, it was that we needed to draft athletes, and ever since that pick, I think the Steelers have done a much better job of recognizing that.

Detroit has beaten: Arizona, NYG and Minnesota. These teams are respectively the 25th, 28th and 10th rated defenses in the league. Also, Stafford is getting sacked at a rate of 3.8 times a game (call it 4). I think if the Defense plays the way they are capable of, they won't have any problems.

Bingo! They've adjusted the drafting and loaded the defense with players. It also helps that guys like Haden landed in our lap (Thanks Clowns) and the much maligned Mitchell also UFA. Gotta give credit to Alualu for also coming in as a free agent. Now its all about staying healthy and the offense starting to build the same momentum as the defense.

That's cool, I'm just not impressed with Dalton past his first read, Stafford I think is better at getting through his progressions, which is why I want to see how we do with him

Our D was great today, no doubt, Stafford will test our pass defense, I want to see how our D handles that.

I'm less concerned with Stafford an the pass defense. then I am, with Stafford ability to scramble out of the pocket an run 20 yds down field. an then when the DB come up to get him, he chucks it 20 yds down field to the WR.
