Report from PFT says Steelers could use Transition Tag on Bell instead of Franchise Tag and save $2.2 million on our salary cap (if a long term deal isn't worked out).

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...eelers-use-the-transition-tag-on-leveon-bell/

This is a pretty risky move if the Steelers decide to go this way. There is no immediate compensation if we lose Bell by not matching a contract offer (although he does count in the compensatory calculations and that seems to almost guarantee a 3rd round selection based on the changes to the system seen this year).

What do you guys think? $2.2 million isn't chump change (that pays for James Harrison for instance). But any team that decides to really front load an offer to Bell could put a crimp into a 3-year plan to win one more with Roethlisberger.

A front loaded offer from another team would kill us and everyone knows it. A late 3rd rounder is not enough compensation for bell, besides even if we could match I don't think he might deserve what some desperate team might throw at him.

Less than 2% of the cap is not worth the risk

Are there any RBs in the draft worth looking at?

With Ben near the end of his career and with Bell at (or near) the top of the running backs in the league, you take the safe option. In this situation, he isn't worth losing without compensation for that amount of cap space.

Franchise, nothing less, unless it's a 3-5year deal.

I read an article the other day and it was pretty much saying that nowadays all teams use the non-exclusive tag. No team is going to give up 2 first round picks for a player. The article said the transition tag is almost never used either.

I'd use the non-exclusive franchise tag. $12 million for Bell for one year is a pretty good deal. Even tagging him next year again at $14 million wouldn't be outrageous especially since most RB's don't last very long in the league.

IMO, this could all be about Bell's agent and he thinking they are deserving of more money than the team is willing to pay. If he really wants more than 12 million per year...why not put the Trans Tag on him and find out what he can make somewhere else?

He IS valuable to the team no doubt BUT he hasn't been the reason we have won games. When he wasn't available, (which is to say he has missed some time), we have been able to game plan differently and still came out exactly the same in 2015 as we did in 2014 in team rushing?

Sometimes I wonder IF we lean too hard on one player at a time. Ben could have beaten the Packers IF he wasn't locked onto Wallace on most plays...same goes now for AB. Bell isn't much different, IMO. We went to NE with him as the primary game plan...he went down and so did the team. We can afford to lose him IF he's gonna need big money to stay, IMO.

It's not like he's exactly been available late in the season for us because we abuse him during the run up to the playoffs?

No team interested in Bell would blink over a third. They don't need to lose Bell. They need to find someone who can use him properly.

**** - imagine you're the Ravens.

would you front load a contract, drop a third and get stronger at the RB position, significantly weaken a division opponent and completely improve your offense for such a low cost?

franchise his ***.

To clarify, there is no compensation for transition tagged players.

The team taking the player doesn't give up the pick, you are saying a 3rd compensatory pick, i.e. *** end of 3rd round. Right?

I don't think you take the risk. If he just a starting RB and not one of the best two in the league, you might risk it. As it is, no way.

Even if it were the Brown's 3rd rounder ( aka 3.1) it wouldn't be enough compensation

The nearest Steelers bar.
Franchise tag is the way to go. The savings on using the transition tag are not nearly enough. If (when) a team offers Bell 4 years, $50 million, with the deal front-loaded a bit with the $5 million bonus and $13 million going the 1st season, the Steelers wind up paying more in the 1st season to match then they would if they had simply franchised him.

They used the exclusive tag, due to AP's contract in Minnesota. Non-exclusive tag would have been top 5 rb salaries from last year, including Peterson's bloated pay. Exclusive tag uses next year's top 5. AP is expected to have deal redone or cut out right, thus making it a rare occasion where it is cheaper to use the exclusive.

Steelers place franchise tag on Le'Veon Bell
Arun SrinivasanFeb 27 2017, 15:57
The Pittsburgh Steelers have placed the franchise tag on running back Le'Veon Bell, the team announced Monday.

Bell and the Steelers face a July 15 deadline to reach a long-term extension; otherwise, he'll be forced to play under the one-year tender for the 2017 season.

Under the terms of the exclusive tag, Bell can't negotiate with other teams this spring.

Bell rushed for 1,268 yards and seven touchdowns across 12 games in 2016, adding 75 receptions for 616 yards. Despite missing four games, he was named to the second Pro Bowl of his career.

The 25-year-old was slated to become an unrestricted free agent prior to the tag.

One of the preeminent running backs in the NFL, Bell is an integral part of the Steelers' offense and the franchise can rest easy knowing that one of its core pillars has been retained for the upcoming season.
