Are you clowning me?

When it comes to which NFL team would sign free-agent pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney, I would’ve gone through 31 guesses before I got to the Steelers.

Maybe 32. Are the Canton Bulldogs still around?

After all, they only have roughly $4 million of cap space. And the Steelers have Bud Dupree and T.J. Watt on the edges, along with Cameron Heyward and Stephon Tuitt as defensive ends.

Meanwhile, Clowney has reportedly turned down multiple offers over $15 million per season.

But Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network says the Steelers and Baltimore Ravens are the two favorites to sign Clowney.

Although the cap issue is likely prohibitive.

“A source close to Clowney told me the Pittsburgh Steelers have been poking their nose around to see if they can sign him. I don’t think he’s going to end up with the Steelers,” said Pauline. “With the Steelers, they’re strapped at the cap. They don’t have a lot of room. They’d have to make room, and the situation would have to be right.”

The one caveat might be if the Steelers trade Dupree and his $15.8 million franchise tag. If they find a partner that wants him at that number or can work out a long-term deal with him, then that’s a possibility.

But then they’d likely have to sign Clowney, 27, to a contract that is not only close to that number this year, but somehow also extremely friendly next season, too. After all, the team’s cap situation is dreadful in 2021, and they may have to trim even more current players to get into compliance.

Pro Football Network says that Baltimore’s release of Earl Thomas will save the team $10 million in cap space and that may be enough room to work out a deal with Clowney.

The Tennessee Titans, Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints may also be in the mix.

For the record I don’t see this happening at all. Maybe the ratbirds but not a Steelers move. But if it did happen I think he would be an upgrade over Dupree. I don’t think either guys are worth $15 million a year though.

No money to really do it so based on that no.....

We always keep extra money to sign someone during the season in case of an injury. I would also note that I expect there to be some contract extensions signed prior to week 1 that open up more cap space.

The bigger question if this fantasy turns to reality is this, where the hell does he play with TJ and Bud out there?

I take BUD DUPREE over clowney. It would take a season for clowney to develop in our system and he wouldn't be worth a long term contract as there is more upside to Bud. Neither will get the money they want and next year's caqp space is dwindling on MUCH more important needs.

Tony Pauline......HAHAHAHAH! He's a click bait hog. About as reliable as a flat tire.

His numbers will not be better than Bud next year. He is injured a lot and takes games off. Pass.

I like how you said "games" and not plays as you've nailed it !!!

LOL....Funny.

**** Clowney and the horse he rode in on.

I dont want him but for some reason, I dont want the Ravens to sign him

He would bring more cap frustration than ability in play thus the damage would be done financially.

Clowney would probably love it. Have a Watt do all the work so he gets less blocking attention and has a big season. Dupree probably telling him that's MY gig. Keep walkin pal

lazy takes to many plays off atleast with we know he doesnt and h as far as those say his numbers were great b/c contract year he worked hard on correct the flaw that dogged him since entering the lauge asa rush LB blitzing via poor lanes and relying on speed, which always led him .5 secs late.
Pass on clowney give came a 2-3 year extention

Agree with most of the above. We can't afford him or any high-priced FA's under the cap and he is hurt too often.
