Tomlin, Ayers Expecting Big Jump In Year Two

BY ALEX KOZORA APRIL 4, 2017 AT 12:48 PM

Stepping up after too many injuries to count, Demarcus Ayers is setting his sights on an even better second season. And Mike Tomlin is right there with him.

Speaking to Missi Matthews last week, Tomlin made it a point to mention Ayers’ name when asked about the rookie class heading into year two. The question referred to Artie Burns, Sean Davis, and Javon Hargrave but Tomlin circled back to the team’s 7th round pick.

“I’m also excited about guys like Demarcus Ayers, who worked his way through the practice squad to the active roster to contributing in some ways at the end,” he said, via Steelers.com. “We got good young people. They work hard. They’re legitimately humble and rightly focused and that’s an exciting thing.”

Ayers’ came onto the season late, making an impact in the thrilling win over the Baltimore Ravens and leading the charge in the Week 17 victory against the Cleveland Browns. A then-unknown hernia injury hindered him in the playoffs, and held him out of the AFC Championship game, but he contributed more than probably anyone – including the coaching staff – expected in Year One.

Steelers.com’s Teresa Varley grabbed some excellent quotes from Ayers, who explained how he spent his rookie season, especially when he was still on the practice squad.

“I would watch the games with the others practice squad players, and remember everything they went over during the week as it played out on the field. I would call out plays, and when watching away games on television, rewind like I was in the film room.”

Ayers told Varley he did the same even after his 53 man roster call-up, going home each night to watch his performance again, getting a head start on Monday meetings and film study sessions.

The wide receiver room is going to be more crowed in 2017, initially at least, with the addition of Justin Hunter and presumed return of Martavis Bryant. But Ayers can make his mark in the slot and in the return game, where with a “a lap around the track,” to steal a phrase from Tomlin, could give him a leg-up. Ayers was drafted as a punt reutrner but as a rookie, it was nearly an impossible task for him to beat out Antonio Brown. In year two? Maybe it’s a different story.

He says becoming stronger is a key for him into his second year, helping him beat press, make contested catches, and as a blocker, though he showed a lot of willingness in the latter, playing bigger than his size. He said he’s betting on himself to make that jump into Year Two and coming into camp in the best shape of his life.

Eli Rogers, as of this writing at least, is going to enter 2017 as the team’s starting slot receiver. But I think Ayers is ready to give him a push.

Ayers did suffer both high and low ankle sprains during training camp...that really limited him on the few punt returns tries he had in preseason games. if he can flash his talent there and he can get enough reps to challenge Rogers at the slot, he could make a big jump in year 2....

Hopefully he stays healthy and shows his best come training camp.....

I'm on record for saying that competition should be open. Love Rogers route running but he offered nothing after the catch. It grew to be extremely frustrating

Demarcus Ayers looks back at his rookie year and looks ahead.

Lessons learned: Demarcus Ayers spent a good portion of his rookie season on the practice squad, not activated to the 53-man roster until Dec. 12. While on there, he learned a lot about the importance of the scout team, having the right approach, and a lot more about the physical challenges of the game.

“I learned how to be a pro,” said Ayers. “When you are in high school and college, everyone wants to just get to the NFL. By being here I learned how to take care of my body, how to prepare mentally and physically week in and week out. I learned every day counts.

“Coming here, being in a great organization, it made me realize what we are here for. Being in the league my first year it was fun learning. It was a good learning experience.”

Lessons learned: This offseason has also been a good learning experience for him. Unlike last year, when the NFL Combine and other things were a focus, this offseason he is able to focus solely on preparing for his second season in the NFL and it’s been a benefit to him already.

“I am getting stronger,” said Ayers. “I would say strength is going to be a big key for me. Also I am working on my all-around game, running routes, blocking, becoming a better punt returner. I want to work to be in a position to help this team even more.

“Coach (Mike) Tomlin always talks about year two and the growth and development of our players. They expect a tremendous jump. I am going to prepare myself to be in the best situation, best shape, to come in and help the team and make the roster.”

Watching film: Ayers said one of the biggest advantages to learning last season, was his ability to sit back and watch. Being on the practice squad he was a spectator at home games, and watched the road games on television in Pittsburgh. But he used that to his advantage.

“I would watch the games with the others practice squad players, and remember everything they went over during the week as it played out on the field,” said Ayers. “I would call out plays, and when watching away games on television, rewind like I was in the film room.

“Even when I played I would go home and watch the games and go over them even before we did it in meetings. It was because of how much I loved football. The things you love in life you cherish them more. This was definitely a learning curve for me and made me cherish football.”

I was very pleased with Roger's progress. And Ayers showed some real flashes. They should have sat the injured Coates and gave him a hat for the AFCCG. I see no point in drafting wr lots of talent on the roster particularly if Bryant is right.

The WR competition period will be crazy this year. Can only make them better.. alot of people with alot to prove even Brown

No WR other than AB should be a lock on the roster......and he needs to show the money didn't go to his head......

Exactly and make up for the distraction he caused.

Coolie you have to see the breakout game Ayers had in preseason in my Madden Franchise: Two TDs and more than a hundred yards!!!

This is defintely the year AB punt returns duties will be delegated to another. His big contract aside, he is too valuable for the offense to take anymore risks as a returner. Would love to see someone ANYONE take the reins and never let go...

Small guys tend to go down in this league unless they are very elusive. Problem for Ayers is that he and Roger's look like similar players and Roger's probably has a secure spot.

my favorite play of his wasn't even a reception...it was his block in the Ravens game on Bell's TD....the play was supposed to go the other way so he is blocking the CB, but loses him when Bell reverses field, he reacquires the block and opens the way for Bell to score easily.....

And let's be honest other than securing the catch it wasn't like he was making dynamic big plays.

if he has real value as a returner he definitely would be worth of a 6th WR spot. With Wheaton gone, there's no slot receiver beside Rogers, we can't go with zero depth at any position.

Which is what you like to see in a young player. Plus a couple times when he made a mistake he seemed to jump back in and do something positive with the next opportunity. Again the game didn't look too big.

Ayers displayed run after catch abilities. Similar stature but Ayers showed more after the catch. That's big. I wouldn't be shocked at all if he is given a fair shot

I updated my roster last year late in the season and made Ayers the #3 WR....he was only behind AB in receptions for my franchise....he cleaned up on crossing patterns and the occasional double move for a deep ball.

in the Browns game he caught a sideline pass but only got one foot in....later in the game almost the same play, but he got both feet down for a nice gain. The kid does learn from his mistakes....

and Ayers had has work at the other WR spots also..he is not strictly a slot guy.....

it was a very good play

It is going to be brutal this year at WR.

We can only hope they (coaches) don't stubbornly hold on to Coates due to draft position issues. I admit, the guy's got the body but he just doesn't have the head right now and do the Steelers want to risk another season on him closing his eyes on a 40 yard opening drive reception in the AFC championship game?

hopefully training camp will thin out the herd

I fully expect another WR to be added in the draft.

Ayers has his shot, just as the rest of them do.

Will be fun to see it sort itself out.

It would be very odd if the Steelers don't draft at least one WR....when was the last draft they didn't take a WR????
