College Football Week 7
A bunch of meaningful games this week that will have huge playoff implications.
4 Penn State at USC 3:30 CBS PSU -3.5
USC is coming off a loss to Minnesota that has them unranked. Their backs are against the wall now. Will they come out fighting or will they pack it in like they did last year after their 2nd loss?
This is a huge game for Penn State. If they win this game then their path to the playoff gets much easier, even if they lose to Ohio State. College teams are not used to cross country road trips. Usually it's for a bowl game where teams have weeks to prepare. It's tough in season.
On paper, Penn State should dominate. USC's OL is awful. Penn State is one of the tops in the nation at pressure. USC QB Miller Moss has been running for his life vs lesser pass rushes. USC is the best pass game PSU has faced but will Moss have time to throw?
USC has been overpowered by Michigan and Minnesota run games. Penn State's run game is just as strong with e better passing game. So, on paper, Penn State has a chance to win big.
But PSU has had slow starts. Maybe they will have jet lag issues and it may be in the 80s for the game. Their backup pass rushers are a big dropoff from the starters if the heat means they have to play more subs. USC has some big WRs. Maybe they can hit some big plays downfield.
I'd like to see the passing game show more. But in this one, just do what you have to do, grind out the win, then they have a Bye.
South Carolina at 7 Alabama 12:00 ABC Ala -21
How will Bama respond to what they view as an embarrassing loss? I doubt SC has enough to stay up with a pissed off Bama, but that Bama defense needs to show something.
1 Texas at 18 Oklahoma- the Cotton Bowl 3:30 ABC Tex -14.5
It will always be the Red River Shootout. Now a SEC conference game. Texas is rolling and Oklahoma looks like crap. They had no chance vs Tennessee and last week they were very lucky to beat mediocre Auburn.
This is a rivalry and Texas has Georgia next week so maybe they overlook this one? That's the only way i see Texas losing but Oklahoma's offense is so bad, I just don't see it happening.
Stanford at 11 Notre Dame 3:30 NBC ND -22.5
a rivalry game for ND. Stanford is not that good this year. ND has no ranked opponents on their remaining schedule. With that weak schedule they can't afford a 2nd loss.
Cal at 22 Pitt 3:30 ESPN Pitt -3
Pitt looking to go 6-0 for the first time since 1982. Cal lost a close one to Miami last week where Miami got bailed out again by the refs. Cal has a good defense. They lead the nation in INTs. It will be the first big test for Pitt QB Eli Holstein.
Florida at 8 Tennessee 7:00 ESPN Tenn -15
Tenn is coming off the big upset at the hands of Arkansas. Tenn is breaking out the checkerboard for the fans. Tenn has Bama next week, so you could have seen a scenario where they overlook Florida, but not after that Arkansas loss and not with this being Tenn's SEC home opener. It's the Tenn offense that is the question mark now as they've struggled a bit.
2 Ohio State at 3 Oregon 7:30 NBC OSU -3
a huge showdown in the Big 10. Personally, i think Ohio State is going to pound the crap out of Oregon. I have not been impressed with Oregon this year. But it is a long trip out west. Ohio State's schedule thus far has been easy but they dominated Iowa last week. Iowa has a defense that makes you earn it and Ohio State had no problem putting up 35 on them. I know everyone love Oregion QB Dillon Gabriel but this is his 6th year as a starting QB at his 3rd school. If he was great he would have been in the NFL 2 years ago. If Oregon wins this, they have inside track for the Big 10 title game with their toughest remaining game Illinois.
9 Ole Miss at 13 LSU 7:30 ABC Miss -3.5
last year's game was 55-49 Ole Miss with them racking up 700 yards offense. This year's game should feature at least some defense. It's a matchup of QBs.. Ole Miss's Jaxson Dart whose name sounds like a gay porn star, and LSU's Garrett Nussmeier whose name sounds like a tax attorney. LSU only played 1 decent oppenent, USC (the real one), and they lost. Ole Miss also lost to their only good opponent, Kentucky. The loser of this game will have a tough time making the playoffs.
Vanderbilt at Kentucky 7:30 SEC Net UK -13.5
battle of the SEC spoilers. WHich spoiler will spoil the spoiler's season?
18 Kansas State at Colorado 10:15 ESPN KSU -3.5
this is an important game for Big 12 conference seeding. K-State already has a conference loss to BYU. They can't afford another. This will be K-State's strong run game, led by Colorado transfer RB Dylan Edwards, vs Colorado's wide open passing game.
