While his thoughts on the matter make sense, I don't see the practice changing anytime soon.

"I think it's horrible," Colbert said at his annual pre-draft news conference with Steelers coach Mike Tomlin. "I think it's really bad for our profession when people use whatever means they use to get information out to try to influence the draft and they talk about a kid's test score, a kid's injury, a kid's character. I think that's awful. It's disrespectful to our profession, it's disrespectful to the game, it's disrespectful to the kid.

Yeah Yeah Kevin we hear you. This has been going on for decades and with this enormous build up and anticipation of the annual draft, hundreds of mock drafts, so called experts making every teams picks, you know as well as anyone Kevin its not going to stop so enough with the lip service please. Remember too Kevin that this is the information age and yes these kids are subject to all of it's scrutiny from low test scores to unimpressive combine scores. Its your job my friend to make your decisions on the players we draft based on his college tape, just how big a role his combine scores play, his wonderlic scores and the kids attitude. If he made a mistake in college its your job to determine whether he's a good risk at this point ala Mike Adams. So no sense complaining Kevin, just do your best.

This coming from a guy that openly was glad a player ran a horrible 40 at a pro-day so he could draft him. Please...

Why the **** wouldn't people want to know that information? Maybe, the players should learn that the interwebs exist, everyone has a camera with them at all times, and clean up their act?

Actually, KEVIN, its explains a lot as to your information gathering. Do you just poke your head into the sand, so as not to hear or participate in this kind of propaganda?

Salute the nation

I hope Colbert takes his high road bullshit to the unemployment line.

He should have been fired last off-season.

he's trying to be buddy buddy with the rookies and players in general. That's not his damn job!

Running a horriblel pro day 40 is quite different than a last min "Leak" that a guy "might have problems with nose candy" sniff sniff, Joe Mon ******* tana anyone? It was bullshit then, and it's bullshit now, the difference was, we were ******* STUPID enough to let Montana slide when he was there for us. Idiots.

Joe

It's disrespectful to our profession
I think Colbert's defensive drafting (plus Archer) is disrespectful to his profession. Using that yardstick he's still 50% better than Matt Millen though.

Dittos.

"general manager Kevin Colbert denounced the leaking of information about draft-eligible players Monday and all but said the practice of doing so to disguise teams' draft intentions has to stop."

So it sounds like that is not what he said. Was this guy one of the same guys that was telling us Brown was going to hold out?

Yeah sounds like he is talking about rumours, like the story apparently leaked by an unnamed team saying Randy Gregory was under 230 when they worked him out. The story may be true, then again it could be some team who wants Gregory releasing false information to the media in hopes it makes him drop to their spot.

Whether you like Colbert or not the point he makes is valid.

Was the guy in question named Marino and not Montana?

I would imagine one needs to pay attention to what is going on so as to not be fooled by this bull ****.

Some of you actually need to hear the press conference this was pulled from. He was asked specifically about whether information leaked in the days just before the draft influence their draft board at all. And this is the issue he had, the false information that doesn't fool anyone and only embarrasses the kids involved. But please, keep on hating to hate...

Word was that Chuck himself sat down, talked to Dan Marino and afterward made the call. Short version was, although Marino was an offensive star, the Steelers were built on defense and they weren't interested in rebuilding the entire franchise around one player.

It was decided it was best for both the Steelers AND Marino if Pittsburgh didn't draft him and ultimately, I think that's true.

They may have thought that he would be a repeat of Gilliam at the time, however he would have done well in the burgh and likely been able to win championships while here. I suspect that in the pre salary cap days that were in existence prior to Marino if I am remembering correctly they would have been able to build the team how ever they wanted.

Because I'm old and remember this stuff, the big factor was simply that they thought Bradshaw had a few more years left and no one figured that his elbow injury would end his career at that time. They drafted Gabe Rivera, who I think was a good pick and would have been a stud on the DL that needed to be rebuilt at the time, but unfortunately he was paralyzed in a car accident halfway through his rookie year. If Bradshaw played two or three more years and Rivera was 10 year starter and Pro Bowler then we're not as concerned with passing on Marino. /beating dead horse
