Steelers sign Ross Cockrell for next season

Cornerback Ross Cockrell was set to be an exclusive rights free agent this offseason, a designation that is more about the exclusive rights because a player isn’t a free agent at all unless the team doesn’t want to re-sign him.

Cockrell won’t have to go through those motions come March, however. The Steelers announced Friday that they have signed Cockrell to a contract for the 2016 season.

“This was very important,” Cockrell said in a release announcing the agreement. “I feel like we had a tremendous season. It didn’t end the way we wanted. But for me, everybody got to know me and I got to know everybody. Everything just happened so fast. It’s important for me to have this offseason to get to know people better, grow as a football player and person.”

Cockrell was a fourth-round pick by the Bills in 2014, but was waived by Buffalo in late August. He signed with the Steelers the next week and played 15 games in the regular season. Cockrell started seven games and had 44 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble. He also recovered Bengals running back Jeremy Hill’s fumble in the fourth quarter of Pittsburgh’s playoff win to set up the game-winning field goal.

I guess he just signed for 2016 but one less CB needed since Gay and Blake are free agents.

Ron Burgundy approves of this.

What a ****

This is a necessary move. Look for the FO to find more bodies to throw at this position

I think this is a mistake. I see nothing but upside with this kid, so to give him(if I understand correctly) just a year is a mistake. If he explodes next year he will demand a high contract. He at least should have gotten a two year with an option for three.

Do not forget about Golson. The kid might be a beast..

he will replace blake, gay will start until a fa or more likely a high 2016 rookie unseats him, I think he starts another year in 2017 either or outside corners are Grant or a rnd 2 or rnd 1 pick this year with Cockrell.
Right now I want to see how Cravans runs at the combine and how is work out will be, because he could be a Earl Thomas or a poor mans elite Troy Polamalu

I see this as a very good PLUS for the STEELERS. As previously said, shoulod have been foe more than one year. Take it while we can.

Salute the nation

There's been a lot of talk about Grant to Safety. I'd like to think they are seriously considering that move. I know that last summer Lake mentioned it as a possibility in the future.

Cockrell was probably the guy they should have taken instead of Dri Archer, so in a round about way, it worked out for us

He will be a restricted free agent next offseason. ERFAs are basically auto renewed at close to the minimum.

Next offseason he can be tendered at a first round(3.3+) 2nd round(2.3m+) or original round/right of first refusal(1.5m+) tender level giving us the option to match. Im not sure if original round would apply since we signed him as a free agent.

Maybe he didn't want the low ball 2 or 3 yr extension.
