"He’s had a tremendous offseason,” Haley said. “A guy that any day you were in here, he was in here. You don’t see that with everybody, so you know he had turned it up a notch. I thought he finished the year in strong fashion; it wasn’t an easy year. It’s not an easy year for a guy that’s been playing in the NCAA at a high level to be running scout team. But as the year went on, I think everybody saw him growing and we saw it continue in the offseason and it's continued out here. He understands that there’s great opportunity.”

Coates has kept his fitness in "peak condition," said Haley, who coaches receivers and has played an integral role in the team's development in that area.

The Steelers are outwardly pushing to have the best offense in the league. They want to jump two spots in the rankings after finishing third in total offense a year ago with 6,327 yards, and anything less will be considered a disappointment.

To do so, the Steelers will need Coates to emerge as a valuable role player in the game plan.

piss on the pot head who is out for the season

Coates and the future Hall of Famer Ayers will more than make up for his loss

Even if he turns out to be an average player, he would have a place on my team because of the work ethic.

I would take 53 average players that want to work over 2-3 superstar prima donnas

Yeah **** Bryant he can go to Cleveland and bunk with Johnny and Gordon for all I care.

No reason that O can't be as explosive without him.

A faster TE, a better version of Coates, Bell back for pass catches. That can't be said enough. As Bell in a contract year could make up for the catches all by himself. Not the average per catch but the sheer number of catches. Then you have the other two I mentioned to go along with Wheaton again in a contract year. Then a always hungry Brown. And Jesse James who seemed capable. Just a plethora of options, solid options. Provided the group stays healthy, I really see no reason why this years version can't be more productive. Perhaps not as explosive over the top, but production shouldn't fall by the waist side. Again provided the O is relatively healthy.

A friend of mine who runs a detective agency and private security business had a call about Coates a few weeks back in Myrtle Beach. His guys had to remove him from a club. Luckily one of his guys is a huge Steelers fan and was able to get every thing resolved without any physical stuff. Thank goodness we have fans every where.

Was Coates causing the problem?? Please give us more details if you can..

Salute the nation

Oh god add Coates to Coach's thug list.

Oh god add Coates to Coach's thug list.

I haven't seen anything in newsprint, tv or social media about Coates' character. He's not on my list...any of them.

Thug list, china dolls or busts. We need him to step up this year. Sounds like he's off to good start.

We just gotta stay healthy...the rest will take care of itself.

They think the O can be better than last year? I don't know how that can be, because we scored 6.4 less points without Bryant in the game last year.

at least keep your opinions straight....

OK, kind of not the whole story on points per game.

The D's they played sans Bryant were the Pat, 9ers, Ravens, SD and St. Louis. Those are all fairly good Ds.

The D's MB faces included the Browns, twice, Raiders and Colts. Bad, bad D's.

Also, as the season progressed, the O got humming from more reps. To assume MB's presence was 100% the cause of 6.4 more points a game is not accurate, at all. Could he have influenced more points to some degree? Possibly, but it is hardly something to hang your hat on.

He was never used properly as a rookie.

i don't know why these players go to strip clubs, at least not without their own security guys. They are already targets when they go out, but strip clubs attracts the sleaziest guys there are. Guys whose biggest achievement in life would be bragging about the time he punched an NFL player at a strip club.

at least Coates had the sense to leave without causing a bigger incident.

Bryant

Martavis Bryant blew his Black and Gold(en) opportunity to blow up in the Steelers' explosive offense in 2016. Good thing they already can hear Sammie Coates knocking on the door — loud and clear.

When Pittsburgh drafted Coates in the third round of the 2015 draft, it was the team's typical stash of talent at an already-strong position. With Bryant now suspended for an entire season, Coates has perfect timing as a sensational sophomore to be.

Coates is drawing nothing but rave reviews during his second NFL offseason. Soon after the team found out about Bryant, both general manager Kelvin Colbert and coach Mike Tomlin pointed to the expected grown of Coates as to why the Steelers would be fine without Bryant, without adding another immediate option in free agency and/or the draft.

MORE: Pittsburgh's offseason report card

What Bryant brought to his first 21 games in Pittsburgh was an incredible rate of big plays and touchdowns. On only 76 receptions, he has posted 14 touchdowns while averaging 17.3 yards per reception.

We already have seen Markus Wheaton try to fill the Bryant void as the big-play complement to Antonio Brown, and he was underwhelming. His experience and more established connection with Ben Roethlisberger will have him start as the No. 2 again.

The Steelers should be first to know, however, that Coates' size (6-1. 212 pounds), speed and skill set make him the virtual clone of Bryant (6-4, 212 pounts). Coates wasn't ready to step in like that in a rookie season for which he was active for only six games with only one catch to show for it.

To play for Todd Haley and catch balls from Roethlisberger requires work ethic, discipline and conditioning, all of which Coates had to further develop to catch up to the NFL. Another knock on Coates coming into the league was being too much of a pure vertical threat and not enough of a trusted route runner.

Going back to what he did at Auburn, what was most attractive was how he flew downfield with flair. He had cockiness to be the best, a perfect attribute to make a huge jump after a humbling season.

The Steelers have been addicted to top-end speed at wideout since they took Mike Wallace in the 2009 NFL Draft. The Class of 2010 brought Brown and Emmanuel Sanders. Wheaton and Bryant were taken in 2013 and '14, making Coates feel like a luxury reach to some in 2015.

But this need for speed has been in a high gear since Haley took over four years ago. Despite early issues, he's the offensive coordinator who has understood the quarterbacking strengths of Big Ben best. He's got a guy with a big arm and big legs who loves to buy time. He operates at his most efficient level when there are multiple missiles deployed.

It was not a coincidence that Wheaton woke up when Bryant was also there to flank Brown last season — see the Seattle game. Because Wheaton doesn't have the same size as Bryant or quickness of Brown (no one does), the Steelers' passing game operates better with him as the third option when spreading the field.

That's why Coates has to play a lot and play very well. He's in terrific position to displace Bryant for good if he can prove to be a little more complete on the field and much more reliable off the field.

The Steelers did add a field-stretching tight end, Ladarius Green, to replace retired Heath Miller. But Green already has carried over his durability issues from San Diego and is yet to pull his all-around potential together. Don't assume he can be as reliable as Miller was for so long.

PIttsburgh's main passing production still will come when it goes three wide. It shouldn't hesitate to roll with Coates in everything it intended to do with Bryant.

Coates is ready to go from a near zero to full throttle. Most other teams would take a huge hit losing a threat such as Bryant. With Coates, the Steelers will fast forward to better results.

Sounds like a recipe for an 8-8 team...

Have heard a lot of very good things about Coates this offseason. I'm not surprised given all that he brings to the table. Last year was a wake up call in terms of what he needs to do to be successful and now that he has put in a full offseason, I expect him to be a strong contributor for the offense.
